Page 98 of One Nightstand With My Ex's Uncle
JOHN’S POV.
(The previous evening)
I poured myself fruit wine after finishing my work for the day. It had been so long since I finished my daily work. Most of the time, I carried over work to the next day, so the wine was more of a celebration thing.
“Didn’t know wine still tastes good in an office setting.” I murmured to myself, and looked out the window. “It’s snowing.”
‘It’s snowing, John! Aliens!’ I heard Emily scream in my head. Her giggles followed. ‘I know they’re not aliens. What do I say? Childhood stories stick!’
That was our first Christmas together. The snow had come really late, making everyone wonder if it was ever going to snow that Christmas. Alas, it had.
“We didn’t imagine a Christmas without her, John.” I said, swirling my drink in my glass.
Just then, my door was pushed open.
“Gosh.” I exclaimed, softly, as I was caught off guard.
Katie stormed in, and stood in front of me.
“Sweet to drink wine alone on a snowy night when your woman is out there having coffee, and laughing with your Uncle.” She said, and I gritted my teeth.
“So what?”
“You should know how to handle her. Didn’t you date her for years?”
“Well, it turns out I didn’t really know her, or how far she could go.” I replied, and I could see her eyes flash yellow in the dark. Could Lucas really be the reason she was so mad, as to lose her composure?
“I worked so hard for this, only to find that they’re getting closer.” She forced out, through clenched teeth.
“Take down those eyes, or I’ll take them down for you.” I growled, and she closed her eyes, taking in deep breath, with flared nostrils.
Then she opened them, “They’re getting closer, and it burns. You should know it burns too, don’t you? When you see her laughing with him, when you were the only man who could make her laugh.” She said, and I dropped my wine glass heavily on the desk, causing wine to spill.
Then, I picked up my phone, dialed a number, and regained my smile.
“Hey there, Cherry. What are you doing on this snowy night?” I asked, and Katie narrowed her eyes.
“Why do you ask?”
“Curiousity.”
“Well, I’m sleeping on a cold bed.”
“A cold bed! I’m sitting on an iced chair in a dark office.”
“Do you have some warmth to give to me?”
“Do you have fuel in your car?” I asked, and Katie’s expression turned to one of disgust.
“I will never understand you.” She said.
“Do I hear a lady’s voice?” Cherry asked.
“A movie, Cherry darling. I’ll call you back.”
“You are so despicable.” She said.
“What is so despicable about me?”
“Do you have to sleep with every woman around you? Why? Can’t you keep still? This is how you lost your woman, yet you’re dreaming of getting her back, even though you’re still this way?” She asked, “You’re doing the same thing that made her run from you!”
“And is it your place to judge?”
“What satisfaction do you gain from sleeping around?”
“A lot.”
“A lot?”
“You’re only pained because you think the only way Lucas can see you is if she’s with me. You’re not actually rooting for me to get her back. Even a stranger will do you good by taking her away.”
“I’m glad you know that. Who knows, I just might find that stranger.” She said, and walked out of my office, slamming the door.
Immediately, she did, I threw my wine glass on it, and it scattered in shards all around.
“You don’t get to judge me.” I growled.
Later that night, I got home cold, and drowsy, only to be awakened by the sound of laughter coming from the kitchen.
Emily…
I didn’t need to hear the second voice rise in laughter before knowing who it was. They were still together?
They laughed again, and I couldn’t stand it. I pounded the stairs to my room, taking off my clothes vehemently to prepare for a warm shower.
Katie had every right to be angry. They being together was unbearably disgusting.
After taking a shower, I actually cooled down, and sent for a maid to get me some Brandy.
She came up shortly, looking a little scared for her hand shook as she poured the drink into my glass.
“Your fingers.” I pointed out, and she stopped abruptly. “they’re beautiful.”
I could see her stiffen, but she probably didn’t know that Emily also had smooth, and beautiful fingers.
I looked at her, and saw a faint blush on her cheeks.
“Do you do manicure frequently?”
“No. I’ve…never.” She said, blushing even more, and I looked at her, wondering if she’d feel the same way Emily felt like if I touched her. Would she also be soft and smooth?
Would she be a great source of warmth on the bed? Would she giggle at every single touch?
“Where did you get your hair done? What’s your name?”
“A fellow maid helped with my hair. Just some oils really, and my name is Darcy.”
“Darcy… that’s a nice name. I must say: you look beautiful, Darcy. I don’t think I’ve noticed you before.” I said, and she blushed.
“I’m in charge of the garden, along with some fellow maids, but I was changed today. The oldest instructed me, and a few colleagues to switch to errand maids.” She explained, and I nodded.
She still had a blush on her face, and I wondered if she was happy to talk to me, or my compliment had loosened her up.
Compliments…
They went a long way with ladies. So did gestures.
“What flowers do you like?”
“Dandelions.” She replied, and I nodded.
“If I gave you flowers in front of the maids, would you like that?” I asked, and she paused. “You wouldn’t like that?”
“It’s a beautiful gesture, but I wouldn’t want my colleagues to assume something is going on between us.”
“Oh, so if I give you flowers, then they would naturally assume something is going on between us?”
“Yes, Alpha.”
“Hmm… it was a pleasure talking to you, Darcy. You must be tired and sleepy. Goodnight.” I said, and she bowed, before leaving my room.
I picked up my brandy with a smile lighting my face.
She just gave me a terrific idea.
