EMILY’S POV

Cold…

Ice…

Freezing…

My eyes flew open, and my elbow immediately rose to shield my face from the stunning light of the sun, flitting in through the open windows.

“Gosh.” I said, curling into a ball, as chilly air blew in harshly from the window.

Then I discovered the covers weren’t on me. I had kicked them aside. I was about to fetch them, and cover myself when I realized I wasn’t in my bedroom.

“This…” my hands found their way to my mouth, and I checked my clothes immediately. Why was I in John’s bedroom?

I was still dressed in my T-shirt and jeans, and my coat was hanging on his chair.

“Nothing happened yesterday, right? Gosh, what happened?” I asked myself, as I ran a hand through my hair. It was a complete blank.

“Emily!” I scolded myself. “I had chicken, and roasted potatoes. John and I talked a lot… and… and… we drank cocktails. Did his friends come or not? Gosh, did I blank out from just two cocktails?” I asked myself, and bit my lip hard.

I got up from the bed, and felt blood rush down my veins coldly.

“Wasn’t my blood flowing properly?” I asked, stretching my legs.

Then I noticed blood on the table.

“I didn’t hurt John, did I?” I asked myself, touching the blood with the tip of my middle finger.

An image of my hand soaked in blood flashed in my head, and I quickly wiped the blood on John’s chair.

“I’m never coming back here. Bloody dreams are the worst dreams.” I said, walking quickly out of his room.

But how could I have totally no recollection of what happened? A complete black out, and memory loss from just two weak cocktails?

I got into my room, and jumped with a little scream, as Sadie came out from underneath my desk.

“How did it go? Did you meet his so-called friends?”

“No, I didn’t.”

“Or they were never meant to come in the first place.” She said, brushing her hair in front of my mirror.

“They were definitely meant to come. I think I passed out before they did.”

“Meant to come? You didn’t meet them there?”

“We waited over an hour, and John said they had something come up, and we were to wait for just fifteen minutes more. Whatever happened in those fifteen minutes, I can’t remember.”

“I’m undoubtedly sure John did something nasty. First, the friends didn’t come, then you blacked out. Who drinks hard on new year?” She asked.

“Oh my God! Happy New Year, Sadie!” I squealed, wrapping her tiny body in my arms. “But really, I didn’t drink hard. I had just two cocktails?”

“Who blanks out from just two cocktails? I can’t drink yet, but I haven’t seen anyone pass out from just two cocktails.” She asked incredulously.

“I don’t…know.”

“You’ve been drugged, foolish girl, you have been drugged.”

“Gosh, you’re too extreme. Why won’t your hallucinations be scary when your imaginations are a horror movie on a normal day?” I asked, leaving, only for my lotion to crack me in the skull.

“Sadie!” I shouted, turning around, but she was already at the door.

“I clearly told you not to go. You didn’t listen.” She said, and left my room.

“Why’s she so angry?” Lucas asked, opening my door.

“I said something about her hallucinations. Happy New year!” I said, and ran to my drawer to take out the gift I had for him.

“Here. It’s not much, but…” I said, handing it to him. He opened it, and smiled when he saw the gift. “It’s a hand lotion with one of the best scents ever. Think of me whenever you use it.” I said, and he chuckled, dropping the bag in his hand, so he could apply the lotion on his hand.

“Hmm, this actually smells nice.”

“When you tuck a lady’s hair behind her ear, she will fall for you instantly if you use that lotion.” I said, and he raised a brow, then brushed my hair from my face. I froze, as the sweet scent of the lotion filled my nostrils, and as his cold fingertips brushed my cheek, then my ear.

“It really works. You’re blushing hard.” He said, and my hand flew to my mouth.

“Stop it. I’m just… just demonstrating.” I said, giggling, and moving my hands restlessly.

He laughed. “Here.”

He handed the bag to me, and I blushed, taking out a box. I knelt to the floor, and opened the box.

“Aww.” I said, softly, bringing out a soft white dress, made of a material I couldn’t recognize.

It was a turtleneck, and had long slender arms, and a full skirt—Although the dress was a short one—Intricate silvery patterns weaved around the dress, and its beauty was made even more irresistible by the soft pink shawl I was to hang on my shoulders.

It was made of soft fur, and couldn’t look any more beautiful.

Then separately, in the bag, was a pair of white, knee-high leather boots.

“This is…” I said, but was short of words, as I held the shawl in my hands. He bent, and took my wrist. My fingers curled, shy from his touch, and he fixed a beautiful silver bracelet onto my wrist.

“Happy New year, Emily.” He said, softly, looking into my eyes, and it felt like my breath stopped. I wanted badly to say ‘I like you, Lucas.’, but my tongue felt tied. If only we could stay in that moment forever.

I could stop myself from confessing feelings I was still discovering, but couldn’t stop myself from hugging him.

“Thank you. I love them.” I said, and his hands came around my waist, hugging me too.

“I’m glad you do.”

I really didn’t want to release him, but a second more in that position, and it would feel weird.

“Thank you.” I said, releasing him, and he smiled.

I wore that dress to Tray’s New year party, and everywhere was already buzzing when we got there. People dancing, eating, talking, watching dramas… New year songs blared from speakers, and food was served all around.

Lucas and I were given slices of pizza when Tray saw us, and the pizza was superb. Or maybe it was because I hadn’t eaten breakfast.

“You’re late. Know that? Nice finally meeting you, Miss Waston.” He said, extending his hand out to me.

Finally?

“Nice finally meeting you too. I’ve heard a lot about you.” I said, accepting his hand. “How do I address you?”

“Just Tray.”

“Justray? Okay, Justray.” I said, nodding, as he released my hand.

Lucas laughed. “He means you’re just to call him Tray.”

“Oh!” I said, and laughed, feeling embarrassment cloud over me. “I’m so sorry. Also, I go by Emily. I’ve also heard a lot about you from Lucas.”

“Oh really?” He asked, looking at Lucas, surprised.

“Yeah.”

“That’s unexpected. Well, you’re just in time for the games.” He said, leading us into a less noisy room. A few people were there laughing.

“Everyone. You haven’t met Emily, right? Here she is.” He announced, and they all came to either shake my hand or hug me. They all seemed really friendly with Lucas, and he was free with them.

The last guy held onto my hand sweetly.

“I’ve seen you a lot from the photos, you’re more beautiful in person.” He said, only for Lucas to slap his hand away.

“Aren’t you done?” He asked, and the young man laughed. “I’m a possessive male friend.” He added, making me blush more.

“Hands off.” The guy said, raising his hands, with a smile.

We sat on warm blankets in a circle, and I couldn’t help feeling excited.

“We’re going to play short game before joining the people in the living room.” Tray announced, and the girls seemed interested.

“Don’t you notice we’re exactly five men, and five women?

” He asked, darkly, and I looked around, just as everyone else was doing.

“The winner of these three games will get to buy something they want. Whether it’s a house, or a brand new car, or a swimming pool, or luxury clothing.

You get it as long as you win.” He said, flashing Lucas’ card, and they all clapped hard, getting excited.

“What will you buy if you win?” Lucas asked me.

“Honestly, I don’t know. Um… I want a car.” I said, and he smiled.

“Then you just have to win.”

“It’s a couple game, so pick your partner.” Tray said, and me and Lucas put our arms around each other at the same time, then burst into laughter.

“Okay, the couple that seems more like a real couple at the end of the games, get their wish. You have to act like a couple.” Tray explained.

I blushed.

“You get your gift separately since you’re with me.

” He added, to the lady next to him, and she laughed.

“Game one, eat a candy stick together. First to have the shortest candy stick win. Two, stare into each other’s eyes for a full minute, lovingly and convincingly.

Three…” he brought out lipstick. “How many kisses can you plant on your partner’s face? ”

I covered my mouth at the games. Already my heart was beating hard.

The people were impressed, talking rapidly among themselves.

“That’s intense. I feel embarrassed.” Lucas said, and I laughed.

“I’ll do the kissing.” I said. I couldn’t imagine Lucas kissing me all over my face. I’d go crazy.

“You will?”

“Your skin is soft and smooth. It’ll be a delight.” I said, and bit my lip at my last word. He knocked my head lightly, and I laughed.

“Okay now. The first game.” Tray said, handing out candy sticks. “Hold the ends with your mouths.” He said, and my cheeks heated up, as I held one end of the stick with my mouth, and Lucas held the other with his. Our faces were so close, and all I could stare at was the rich pink of his lips.

“Start!” Tray said, and I saw all the others eating their sticks, about to kiss, but no. Not me, nor Lucas made a move.

We smiled at each other, and kept laughing as we were stuck. I made a little move, and knew my face was going to be completely pink.

He made a little move and we laughed again.

“Done!” We heard a girl call, and we dropped our stick in shock. While we were fooling around, some people were working desperately. She opened her mouth, revealing a tiny piece of candy.

Ours was the longest, and they began to laugh.

“They were staring at each other.”

“They couldn’t move.”

“Gosh, they looked so cute together.”

“Her face is totally red. Well, who can stand being so close to Lucas?”

“Okay, winners of the first game. Can you win in the second? Stare in your partner’s eyes for a full minute. Time starts….now!”

Lucas and I turned to each other, and smiled again. It suddenly felt like a no-blinking contest.

My eyes stung, but most of all, my heart wasn’t steady. He looked into my eyes like he was staring right into my soul, and I couldn’t help feeling hot all over.

In the end, I broke the stare blushing and giggling.

“Gosh, you made me break mine.” Another girl said, and another couple broke theirs. Only two couples made it to one minute without breaking their stares.

“Alright. Now is the final game. See we wasted no time? A little game, but a huge reward. It’s a new year gift. Whoever will be doing the kissing should come forward.” He said, and the girls all came forward.

We applied lipstick on our lips, and I made sure to apply a lot.

Gosh, it’s going to be awkward! I screamed in my head.

Then I faced Lucas who was smiling.

“Start!” Tray said, and the girls went into a kissing frenzy. I moved closer to Lucas, but it felt like my chest would explode.

“Close your eyes, stop staring at me.” I said, putting my hand over his eyes, and he laughed.

“Okay, okay.” He said, and closed his eyes.

I pecked his cheek. Soft, smooth… he smelled nice.

“If you’re that slow, we’re going to lose.

” He said, and I bit my lip. Suddenly the only place to kiss felt like his lips.

I shook my head hard, and kissed his other cheek.

Then his forehead, then his cheeks again.

“There’s no space on your face.” I said, and everyone burst out laughing. I looked at her guy who had lipstick marks all over his face. He was the one without space on his face, not Lucas.

I moved to kiss him on his chin, but unfortunately, he happened to shift his head downwards, and the kiss landed on his lips.

I gasped. His eyes flew open, staring at me speechlessly.

“I didn’t mean that. Gosh, I didn’t.” I said, with my hands over my mouth.

“Time up! Sera, count the kisses.” Tray said, and Sera began to count, while I smiled foolishly.

I ended up kissing those pretty lips, and they were as soft as ever.

“This one is twenty-four… one, two… sixteen. This is twelve, this is… woah, twenty-five, close! And this is…” She said, coming to us and laughed. “Six!”

Everyone began to laugh, including me and Lucas.

“Actually, The kiss on the lips is ten points, but you guys didn’t win the previous games, so no.” Tray said, and I sighed.

My car was gone.

The first couple won.

“I just want a little shop where I can display my jewelery. I have jewelery I sell. I just need a shop.” She said, and right there, they looked up available buildings on the net, and arranged to meet with the building owner in person. Tray was going to go with her.

The man smiled, “I don’t want much. I would like to be an employee at Lucas’ company.” Everyone laughed. Of course, he wanted a steady income. “I have my documents. I have everything. I believe I’m qualified.”

“We’ll see.” Lucas replied, with a smile.

We all went out to join the party, and it was fun to see so many people having fun. They had dance battles, and Lucas and I placed bets on the dancers we felt would win.

They played more games, and honestly, it was the best new year I ever had.

We got home late in the afternoon, and I changed into a white T-shirt, and blue denim shorts.

Then, as I was on my way to the kitchen from the living room where I had been watching a movie, I ran into John.

Immediately, flashes of the night before made it into my head.

Darkness, dizzy, high-pitched sounds, John lifting me. Injecting me, me signing something with blood.

He came with a document, and smiled at me.

“Good afternoon, honey.” He said, and in a flash, I recalled everything perfectly.

I screamed.
