JOHN’S POV.

I couldn’t explain the happiness filling me as the thunder raged on. Thunder on the last day of the snowing year. People would think ‘wow, it is something unusual to welcome the new year.’, but I knew it was to strengthen my bond with Emily. It was the long forgotten Alpha Marriage.

The papers alone weren’t ordinary papers. They were papers with strength in them, papers with binding powers, and Katie had gone through hell to get them for me. In return, I had given her the company card to do whatever she liked with it, and she had been grateful.

“Emily, you don’t know how happy I am.” I said, arranging the documents. “This… we’re finally together. Nothing is tearing us apart. Gosh, I didn’t think it would be as easy as this. This is beautiful.” I said, getting up.

I kept the documents in a safe folder, and returned to her.

“Emily.” I called, and she raised her head weakly, looking at me with angry tears. She didn’t even have enough strength to look angry.

I bent, and gave her a kiss.

“It’s been so long since we kissed, Emily. I missed it.” I said, and kissed her again. My intention was to sleep with her right there, as I had been yearning for her for months. It brought back memories of all the times we had kissed, and slept together.

Each time had been fun, passionate, and full of longing. Even if she didn’t kiss me back, I could feel the desire racking the corners of my body— Filling me up with an energy I hadn’t gotten since she had left me.

Her head lolled to the side helplessly, and I smiled. It could wait. Everything could wait. In a little time, I would have her.

With that thought in mind, I lifted her weak frame, and laid her in my bed, covering her up properly.

“You don’t have to cry, Emily. For a while you won’t recall anything, and I hope when you recall, I will be there, so you don’t do something crazy.” I whispered, wiping away her tears, and she closed her angry eyes, releasing more tears.

I left her in the room because sleeping next to her could be quite disastrous, and I had no need to fear anymore. She was all mine.

The next morning, the ground was totally filled with snow. I looked out the window, and smiled. It was a beautiful day.

“Happy New Year, Alpha John.” The maids greeted one after the other, as they resumed their duties after spending the New year with their families.

“Oh, I wish you the same.” I said, cheerfully. “If any of you need something, feel free to meet me. Uh, actually…” I said, taking out my wallet. I took out my card, and handed it to one of them.

“Alpha John, is there…”

“Use it. Share with the maids. You can use it all. It’s a New Year gift.” I declared, and they all looked shocked, yet joyful.

Their unending thanks echoed, bouncing off the walls, as I walked past them smiling. Yes, I was starting off the year on a new note.

During breakfast, Dad grunted.

“Why aren’t you saying anything? Why did you ask to have breakfast with us?” He asked impatiently, and I smiled, continuing my meal.

Uncle Will wiped his lips.

He said, “I’m a busy man. Even on New Year.”

“In that case, since we can’t have an enjoyable breakfast on the first day of the year, I’ll break the good news faster.” I said.

“Good news?” Aunt Mira asked, dropping her cutlery. “Go on. Spill it.”

“Well, Emily and I are finally getting married.” I announced, and they froze.

“Did she agree to that?” Aunt Genevieve asked, after a silence that must have lasted a full minute.

I opened the large journal next to me, and took out the documents we had signed the previous night, with our hands and our thumbs.

I spread it out in front of them, and Dad snatched it, looking at it thoroughly. Uncle Will took it next, and Aunt Mira stretched her neck desperately to get a look.

“This… this… How can you engage in this kind of marriage, knowing that you are a cheat that can never make her happy?” Uncle Will asked, his bottom lip quivering, and I smiled.

“I quit being a cheat, Uncle Will. No more. I can make Emily happy, and whether or not she’s happy with me doesn’t matter to you. It is our business.” I replied coolly, and he threw the documents on me. Aunt Mira quickly gathered them up and stared at them with Aunt Genevieve.

“The old Alpha Marriage.” Aunt Genevieve said quite calmly. “Did Emily agree to this?”

“Yes.”

“Was she awake?” She asked.

“She’d have to transform halfway for her to sign this, wouldn’t she? Of course, she was awake.” I said.

“There’s something tricky in this. The girl doesn’t love you.” Dad said.

“But it’s there. Do you need to worry? We can finally tell the world we’re getting married, and they can keep their mouths shut about an affair.” I said, getting to my feet. I took my leave, and they stared at me as I went.

I knew they were only that way because they had given up on Emily. In a few days, they would be the ones rushing the marriage.

All in the name of their honor, and reputation.

Katie was in the house when I got there, and she saw the documents with me.

“Why did your friend give you the documents? He wants you to keep them? I can keep them for you, since you lose things easily.” She said, holding out her hand, as she walked to me.

“You don’t know how much you have helped me.” I said, standing in front of the door.

“Really?” She asked flatly, as I handed her the documents. She glanced at it, and took her eyes off, only to look back at it. “John!” She shouted.

“Yes, sweetie.”

“This… this… you said your friend Tommy and Leah wanted to get married! This… this is you and Emily.” She said, shocked.

“I lied.”

“You’re a jerk.” She spat, and took out my card from her phone pouch.

She tossed it onto the floor, along with the papers, and stormed past me.

Then, she stopped after opening the door.

“I regret knowing you. You are just becoming worse day by day. You are no man, John. I know Emily could never have signed this wide-eyed, and I hate you for it. Because I wanted none of this. I don’t mean to seize her happiness. ” She said, and slammed the door hard.

Of course, she’d feel guilty that she had a hand in it. That, I could understand.

I turned around, and looked at the silent door.

Was it too much? Didn’t she want Emily gone so she could have Lucas? Why did she think Emily wouldn’t be happy with me? I was going to make her happy.

Emily and I had been together for years. How could I let her go? It would kill me for the public to know things weren’t fine with Emily.

Just then, I got a text. It was from Katie.

I rolled my eyes, and went to my room, but when I stared at the empty sheets, and the blood on the table, I began to wonder about Katie’s words.

Would I truly have Emily? She was mine, but would she truly be mine?

Would she ever smile at me, and build a house of cards with me? What if the angry look never faded from her eyes? Did I actually lose her? But what was I supposed to do?

I opened my phone to try to message her through her Instagram account, and the first thing I saw was Tray’s post. It was a picture of them, with other people all toasting to the new year. Emily had a hand on Lucas’ arm, and looked really happy.

There was another, where she stared at Lucas while seeming to be saying something that had her excited. I got lost in that picture, syncing it with her happiness at the arcade.

I recalled being the sole reason for her laughter… Whenever I managed to make her laugh, it always made me feel a sense of fulfillment.

Did I really marry her to show her she wasn’t to disrespect me? Did I marry her to prove I would always get my way?

Or… did I marry her because I truly wanted to be with her? Because I truly wanted to make her smile?

I thought I had lost my love for Emily a year back, but had I been fooling myself?

Did I still love Emily?
