Page 80 of One Nightstand With My Ex's Uncle
EMILY’S POV.
“Mandy!” I called sharply, getting up from my chair to chase after her. “Mandy!” I called, grabbing her arm, and turning her just before she opened the door to the foyer.
“Let go.” She said, wringing her hand out of mine in disgust.
“Okay, just calm down, okay? Let’s talk.”
“We already talked, but you didn’t wait to listen to everything I wanted to tell you, did you?” She asked.
“Okay, okay, I’m sorry. Just wait.”
“I spoke to Lucas yesterday, and he hurt my pride.”
“I’m sorry about that, but you need to think about this. We’re both going to go down if you do this.”
“You should fear the people who have nothing to lose. Yesterday, he reminded me I have nothing to lose. I have no influential family, or an image I’m trying to uphold, so I guess I’m fine with whatever happens. Let’s go down together.” She said, turning away, but I turned her back again.
“Wait! Okay, wait, you seriously need to think about this. They’re not people you mess with just like that! Hear me out. How about… we strike some deal with Lucas? You have to…”
“No. You want to stop me. If I meet with Lucas then I wouldn’t be able to bust you.”
“Okay, okay, wait! We’re not meeting Lucas! Let’s just talk. Just me and you. Hm?”
“Then leave.” She said, folding her arms.
“Leave?” I asked, flinging my arm in the direction of the stairs. “Okay.” I said, and began to turn away.
“No. Leave this house.” She said, and I turned back to her.
“Leave? As in leave with all my things?” I asked, dumbfounded.
“Yes. Pack your things, and leave quietly.”
“They’ll kill me. I can’t do that. I have three years to serve with John, don’t you know that?” I asked, wondering if she was serious.
“Do I look like I care? You’re going to be in trouble either way. It’s either you run, or you have them kill you after discovering what you did with their beloved youngest.” She said, looking happy to have the upper hand.
“Mandy, you have to wait, and let’s figure something out. I can’t run. They’ll find me, and then…”
“I don’t care! Don’t you understand that? I think I’ve been clear enough. I don’t want to see your face anywhere.”
“Mandy, that’s impossible.” I said, feeling like I’d burst into flames if she kept pressing me.
“Find a way to run. Or else I’ll really spill it this time at the family dinner. You have till evening, and this time around, don’t dare me. It won’t end with just pictures this time.” She said, and left, slamming the door, and leaving me with heaviness in the air.
After watching the door for a while, dumfounded, I walked back to the dining table slowly, looking devastated.
My sweet bread and peanut butter lay on a dish, half eaten, but that was probably how far it would be touched. I wasn’t in the mood to eat anymore. My appetite had suffered a knife to the heart.
I walked up to my room, and stared up into space for a long while before Sadie came in later that same morning.
“Have you seen my pink boots?” She asked, looking around. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing.”
“Spill it.” She said, looking irritated.
“Is the family having a joint dinner tonight again?” I asked.
“I think so. Mum likes the idea of a full table.” She said, looking under my bed, then lifting clothes off a chair.
“Mandy wants to tell them.”
“Again?”
“She wants me to run away. To leave.” I told her, and she scoffed.
“Is she kidding?”
“She’s not.”
“Well, like I said, I’m going to destroy her soon…”
“And when is the soon?” I asked, rolling my eyes.
“Tonight.” She replied flatly.
“To…what?”
“Tonight, so get ready for tonight. It’s going to be heated.” She said, finding her boots in my shoe rack.
“Tonight? Hey, explain.”
“I’m going to help, and you should be thanking me. Mandy’s not staying a day longer.” She said, leaving my room.
“Sadie!”
“Don’t call me!” She shouted.
All through that day, I couldn’t concentrate on my work. Mandy was right behind me, typing away, while singing dirty songs, but my mind was faraway.
What was Sadie planning? Was it going to get me in trouble? I had to warn her not to leave matters to her childish eight-year-old brain.
Later that evening, Katie dropped in, and when she did, I heaved a sigh. All day, people had come in through that door, and each time, my heart had leaped up, expecting Sadie.
But she never came.
“You still have an hour to leave. Dinner is being prepared.” Mandy said, getting up from her seat.
“Leave?” Katie asked.
“Don’t bother about it, sweet Katie. It’s between me and Emily.” Mandy said, in a honeyed voice, and left Katie and me in the living room.
“She’s not bullying you, is she?” She asked, opening her laptop.
“Of course, she is.” I replied, with a sigh, and finally, I heard my name.
“Emily!” Sadie called, and I turned to the door, with my heart roaring in relief and joy. She pushed open the door wide. “Emily!” She called, looking towards the stairs, but caught sight of me. “Follow me.” She said, and I ditched my work immediately.
“I’ll be right back.” I said to Katie and followed after Sadie.
“Okay, okay. I’m late, I know that, but it’s been a tough day. Hold my bag, will you?” She said, pushing her bag against my belly.
It wasn’t even a request.
I held her bag, and she straightened her school uniform, tucking in properly, and rolling up her socks.
She smoothened her hair, and began to run.
“Wait!” I called after her, running with her to her mother’s mansion.
She led me to a mini living room, where a young teen was sitting there. He looked sixteen or so, and seemed to be from an influential family as well.
“Hello.” He greeted.
“Hi.”
“Alright, George, get started. We’re complete.” Sadie said, crossing the room to pour herself water from a jug on the table.
I sat on a sofa, waiting for her to explain. She drank long and deep before giving a sigh.
“I’m super excited.” She said, as George took out his laptop.
“So this is George, a friend of mine, and he’s going to help. Here’s the thing. John took me out to the movies after I bugged him to take me somewhere, and during the movie, he received a text. It was a video from Mandy. I tried to look, but he looked around, and when he saw me looking, he hastily hid his phone away, and didn’t bring out his phone again, until we were in the car; when he did, he held it discreetly. I think they have a secret they’re covering up.” She explained, and I furrowed my brows.
“So, you want to steal John’s phone or what?”
“No. We’re hacking in.” She replied.
“That’s impossible. John’s phone is highly fortified. He has all…”
“That’s why we’re hacking into Mandy’s.”
“Ohhh.” I said, and watched George tapping away on his laptop.
“Whatever we see there, we’re going to blow it up big.”
“What about John?”
“He won’t get hurt. He’s family. Mandy’s the one getting hurt. Do you care about him?”
“No way! Why would I care about such a jerk?” I shot back immediately.
“Alright. Then we’re good to go.” She replied, “Hurry George, it’s almost time for dinner. I can smell the maids cooking.”
“What if there’s nothing on it?” The boy asked.
“Just do as you’re told.”
“And you do as you promised or I’ll blackmail you with this.” He replied, and Sadie threw a cushion at him, which he dodged.
I smiled.
“Blackmailing the blackmailer.” I commented, and she glared at me.
“No one can blackmail me. Not a single person.” She replied, and he smiled.
“Come and check this out.” He said, and we both went to sit on either side of him.
“You got into her phone already?” Sadie asked.
“As easy as pie.” He replied, as he navigated her apps.
“It’s this.” Sadie said, pointing to her messaging app.
We clicked it, and John was the last person she spoke to.
“Where are you?” Sadie read the last message Mandy had sent to John, and as we continued to scroll, I leaned over behind George, and covered Sadie’s eyes hastily with my hands.
“What!?” She asked angrily.
John and Mandy had sexted a lot of the time, and she had sent nudes.
I looked at George and his eyes were closed.
They had better stay closed.
Mandy was doomed.
