LUCAS’ POV.
She took in deep breaths, after spitting out the words she looked like she regretted saying.
Seeing that I was no longer fighting to get her off me, she let go of my leg slowly, and remained on her knees, with lowered lashes.
“Someone is planning to bring my family down through Derel.” I said, wanting her to confirm or repeat what she had said.
“I… I wasn’t going to involve myself in it, or wrap myself up in all that mess, but maybe I have to. I really want to stay in the company.” She said, still staring at the floor.
I bent and looked at her.
“Look at me.” I said, and she raised her wet lashes.
In her terrified, yet desperate eyes, I saw the sincerity.
“Follow me.” I said, getting up. I took my winter coat off the hanger, and put it on. She seemed unsure whether or not to follow me, but she followed either way. As I walked past employees, I began to wonder how many of them were actually haters of the Grangers.
Only when we were safely seated in the café did I feel comfortable enough to hear her out.
“Some people? Which people?” I asked her.
“I don’t know them.” She said, and I scoffed, leaning back in my chair, and crossing my legs.
“Are you messing around with me?”
“I’m being truthful, Mr. Granger. Weeks ago, I went to the grocery store to get myself some stuff to cook, and there was this man making a phone call on the opposite side of the shelf I stood.
He said the Granger family will crumble to the ground for their audacity, and that they could use the twin boy.
Then I heard him mention your influencers.
He clearly said Alpha Lucas’ new influencers.
“I can’t remember much because it was only a week after that I finally applied to your company.
Then, some days later, it made sense to me.
You were Alpha Lucas, you were a member of the Granger family, and we were your influencers.
When I saw Derel, I realized he was the twin boy, and tried to use what I knew to get him back; Thinking if he stayed with me, then we could find a way to solve things, but I was wrong.
” She said, looking at the table, with troubled eyes.
“So one of the influencers—not you— is working for some enemy?” I asked, moving towards her to rest my arms on the table.
“I’m pretty sure of it.” She replied firmly.
“You’re sure?”
“Yes. I can spy for you. I can get to know them more, and check them out. Maybe they have hidden secrets, and things they don’t want people knowing. I can really do this. Just please, don’t throw me out.” She pleaded, looking up at me in desperation.
“Fine. You may leave.” I said, and she got up immediately.
“Thank you so much.”
Long after she had gone, I stayed there in the café, ordering cup after cup of latte.
What were we going to do if attackers kept on rising, trying to bring us down with plot after plot?
The one about me and Emily had been hard enough, with other packs threatening to rise above ours. They wanted to use Derel? In what way? Derel, who I knew was never one to cause trouble, so how could they use him?
I sat there for a long time puzzling over what it could be, and how to stop it. Not with Genevieve recovering slowly. She cared more about the reputation of the family, and went to great lengths to protect it. If Tenor was right, it would only make her worry. Not when she ought to be resting.
Raymond was getting crankier with age. What would he do if such troubles were arising when he was thinking of stepping down, and putting John in charge?
First, John slept around, and had dirty conversations with a woman who could decide to expose them anytime she wanted.
We all were sure Mandy wasn’t the only one he had such conversations with.
Raymond wouldn’t want to succeed to John, and Will and I didn’t want the pressure of ruling. This would only give my siblings a headache.
Later that day, Tray and I went to the influencers’ house, and they all sat in front of us, on the sofas, in their best behavior.
I looked at Tenor, and she gave me a little nod, like she was trying to tell me she had found something out. I tilted my head slightly, and she nodded again, then looked around.
“So, we’re here to discuss the different types of reels you’re going to make.
” Tray began. We’ll need you in these seven areas: Fashion, Cuisine, Traveling, Product reviews, Contests, Dancing, and Song cover making.
Each of you will pick one of these, and you’ll work with our producers to make content based on these areas.
As the contract says, you have to do this solely for a year, and when a year expires, you can add other content you wish to add, as long as the company agrees to it.
” Tray explained, and they all paid attention to him, except Tenor who kept on looking around.
She was so weird. Did agreeing to spy for me mean her looking around whenever I was in sight?
Tray continued to talk about the content the girls would create, and so far, they gave positive responses.
Jenny was surprisingly interested in traveling, as long as she got to go to different, exotic and beautiful places, Tenor wanted to be in charge of the latest trends on fashion,
Sandra wanted to make cooking content, and Keith opted for product reviews as expected of her. Paris went for Dance, Mina wanted to sing, and Judy went for contests.
Immediately after the discussion, which left the girls excited, Tenor came to meet me where I was having a cup of coffee.
“So?” I asked, and she looked around secretly.
“I noticed something. Before I hadn’t really noticed it, but after agreeing to watch them, it seemed weird to me.” She began, and I gave a sigh.
“Don’t beat around the bush.”
“Okay. I noticed Sandra and Mina always whispering and giggling to each other. What could bind a quiet girl, and a childish, always-talking noisy girl? They’re total opposites. They…”
“Wait. That’s it? This is what you wanted to say?” I asked in disappointment?
How could she report a friendship between two people of different personalities as uncanny if the two were always laughing?
“If it was all I noticed, I wouldn’t have come to you.
I came to you because I know I definitely heard one of them mention Derel’s name.
It made me wonder: could they have been whispering and giggling about how they will make the Grangers fall?
That was why I decided to inform you about it.
” She explained, and I nodded slowly, looking at Mina who was sitting on a sofa, staring into space, and Sandra who was bothering Jenny, who didn’t seem interested in whatever Sandra wanted.
“That’s actually a meaningful piece of information.” I said, slowly, looking around. “Where are their rooms?”
“They share a room.” She replied, and I looked towards the stairs.
“Take me there.” I told her, and she took three steps, but stopped.
“Take you…there? Their room? I… I don’t know if that’s proper.” She said, scratching her neck uncomfortably.
“Mina.” I called, and she looked up.
“Yes, Alpha Lucas?” She replied.
“Can you show me to your room?” I asked, and she stared at me expressionlessly for a while, before getting to her feet.
“Follow me, please.” She said, leading the way.
Sandra watched us go, and Jenny knocked her head. I watched them bicker from the large mirror that showed their reflections. Nothing suspicious about their expressions.
We got to Mina’s room, and she opened the door. They had nearly decorated their room completely in pink.
“I see you like pink.” I said, looking around.
“No. Sandra loves it.” She replied, politely. “May I ask why you wanted to see our room?” She asked, and I glanced at the pictures on the wall. Boy bands— One direction, Here at last, imagine dragons…
Then, my eyes fell on one of the two desks that were against the wall, next to the door.
I turned abruptly.
Scattered on its surface were pictures of Derel.
