Page 88 of One Nightstand With My Ex's Uncle
EMILY’S POV.
I turned away quickly, staring at the wall closest to me. Did I see well? Were my suspicions of the previous day right? Did Lucas like her? Were they dating? Since when?
I began to walk away, not wanting to be caught in such an uncomfortable situation. Blindly, I walked away from them, and winded up in the garden. I plopped onto the grass, and tried to erase the image I had just seen from my head.
I felt so wronged, angry and jealous at the same time. They were probably having the best of time with each other.
Why would Lucas flirt with me all night, and kiss another woman the next morning? Okay, we were just plain friends, but…
“Damn! Friends.” I spat. Why was I mad? I myself had said it so many times that we were just friends, and nothing more.
Just friends. Friends alone.
It stung to think that he might decide to reciprocate Katie’s feelings. But did he really see me as just a friend and nothing else?
It felt really weird. I had never felt that way before. Not knowing how to describe what I felt, or why I was so getting so possessive over a friend.
I chewed on my finger, thinking of how my day seemed spoilt before it could even begin.
But was Sadie still going to try to match make us even when Lucas had someone in his life? I had better warn her because I didn’t want to be seen as someone who stole another woman’s lover. It had been done to me and I hated it. Surely I didn’t want to do it to someone else.
I spent most of my time in the garden, until I figured it was best to get on with my work.
Katie was in the living room, and I tried to read the giddy joy that ought to be on her face, but there was nothing like that. She simply stared at her laptop, typing furiously.
“Did John perhaps leave my work for today with you?” I asked, and she looked at me.
“Yes. Here it is.” She said, and I took it from her, not exactly in a gentle manner. I sat, and looked over it. He wanted me to make a table of all the employees in all his companies, their positions, and salaries.
I rolled my eyes, and began to work.
“How was your night?” Katie asked.
“Nice.” Why was she talking to me?
“You slept on the floor, so I wondered if you probably need some pain relief patches.” She offered.
“No.” I replied curtly.
“Okay, I was just asking.”
Why was she asking?
Did Lucas complain of pain? Was that why she was asking if I was also in pain? Well, I felt fine, and didn’t need any pain relief patches. I wasn’t sore anywhere, and slept quite well.
I was cranky all day, and didn’t want to talk to anyone. Luckily, John wasn’t home, else if he tried to talk to me, I’d have blown up, and said a lot of nasty things to him. Even when Sadie returned from school, I didn’t reply as sweetly as I ought to.
“Want some cookies? I bought them on my way, and…”
“No.” I replied curtly.
“No? You haven’t even tasted them yet.”
“Can’t talk, Sadie. I’m working “
“Wow. We’ve gotten rid of Mandy, the broken engagement, and you being pregnant; so now you think you don’t answer to me because I no longer have anything to blackmail you with?” She asked.
“Didn’t think about that, but I guess it’s true. I no longer have to put up with you.” I replied, and she hit her fingers all over my keyboard, typing in random letters, deleting, and doing damage to my work.
“Sadie!” I screamed, as she hit it hard, and walked away. She was being dramatic.
When Lucas returned from work, I didn’t know how to feel. Annoyed? Cranky? Sweet? Normal? I didn’t wish to reply curtly with him, but he was the main reason I had been a wreck all day.
“I think we’re having dinner without the family. The whole Mandy thing left them speechless.” He said, heading towards the dining.
The maids served dinner, and we all ate in silence.
“What’s wrong with the mood?” Lucas asked.
“Emily’s cranky. She’s been cranky all day.” Sadie reported immediately.
“Is that true?” He asked me.
“No.” I replied, and wished I had more to say, but didn’t.
“See?” Sadie said, looking annoyed.
“Thanks for the meal, but I think I must go home now.” Katie said, getting up from her seat, and Lucas nodded.
Was he going to escort her? Take her home?
“Well, I’m sleepy.” Sadie said, also leaving.
After some minutes, I decided my curiosity wouldn’t let me be.
“Do you like Katie?” I asked.
“Like Katie?” He asked, giving me a queer look. He wasn’t going to lie, was he?
“You didn’t want us to reveal she had also done wrong yesterday.”
“Oh…Katie isn’t like Mandy. She didn’t like it, and she already stopped sleeping with John. She used to be scared of him, and that’s why she did as he said, but gradually, I managed to talk her out of it. She no longer sleeps with him.” He said, but still I was troubled.
“Why are you taking her side?” I asked, dropping my cutlery.
“Side? Are there other sides to take?” He asked.
“Why are you taking the side of the lady who slept with a man I was engaged to?” I knew I was just jealous, and wanted to hear it directly from him that he didn’t like her, but I couldn’t help myself.
“Emily…” He said, looking a little surprised.
“If you like Katie, you can have an happy life with her.” I said getting up. “I enjoyed dinner.” I added, and left the dining table.
That wasn’t what I wanted, I cried inside me.
I wanted to talk and smile, but my stupid mouth kept on saying whatever it wanted, and my body too! They were ganging up against me, betraying me.
All because I was jealous.
