Page 59 of One Nightstand With My Ex's Uncle
LUCAS’ POV.
I couldn’t believe it. Pregnant? But she didn’t tell anyone. No one could even think she was pregnant. I didn’t know why I was so shocked, but I was.
“You were unaware of the pregnancy itself?” The doctor asked.
“Yes, yes, I was.” I replied, and took out my phone.
I dialed Tray’s number.
“Are you…?” Tray began.
“I’ll need you to pay hospital bills. I’ll send the information to you.” I said, and ended the call, then turned to the doctor. “What does she need to do to be completely fine. I mean, the miscarriage surely had its effects.”
“Rest. She can go on short walks, and driving. Just things to make her feel relieved.” He replied, and I nodded.
“Thank you, doctor.”
I got up, and left his office, thinking of everything. Since when? How come it wasn’t in her last medical report?
Wait… I hadn’t seen the report itself. Didn’t Doctor Gilbert see it when he ran a test on her? He was competent, so I couldn’t say he was sloppy, and there was no way he could have hidden it.
It wasn’t even up to a month, since we went to the hospital, and I was very sure Emily didn’t go around sleeping with other men.
Then, it hit me.
Tray had said to start from the hospital. Indeed, he was right.
Emily had gotten the news of the pregnancy, and had been devastated. She had been sad, and off.
It was probably why she had been avoiding everyone, and looking horrible. Did she convince Dr. Gilbert to keep it a secret?
Was she down because she didn’t want to have a baby for the man she already broke up with? I didn’t even know what to feel. She could have married John, if for nothing, but for the baby she could have had.
I realized I was just standing there, so instead, I walked to her ward.
She didn’t try to lose the baby, so maybe she planned to have it.
I walked into her ward shortly, and sat on a chair next to her bed.
She was still sleeping, and it wasn’t until about half an hour before her lids fluttered open, and her dark pupils reacted to the light.
She opened and closed her eyes four times before looking around. Immediately she spotted me, she tried to raise herself, and winced.
I put out my hands to help, but she pushed back, wincing even more noticeably.
“I’m… fine. Just a little bruises here and there.” She replied, sitting properly. She squeezed up her face, and closed her eyes. “I fell down the stairs. How did that happen?” She asked, opening her eyes.
“You’ll recall that very soon. Are you… okay?”
“I think I feel better. I just…” She stopped, and turned to me sharply, with her eyes becoming the size of apples.
“What?”
“Have… have you seen the report? Did the… did the doctor run a test on me? Did they…?” She began, looking away with a guilty look.
“Shhh. Don’t get all worked up.” I said, then sighed. “You lost the baby.” I didn’t know how else to address the issue. I never had to give a pregnant woman such bad news, so I figured just getting it out would be okay.
I didn’t look at her because I feared to see a horrible expression on her face.
“Say it again.” She said in a whisper.
“Don’t be sad. It… it just had to happen.” I said, and finally raised my eyes to meet hers.
I couldn’t recognize her expression. It wasn’t horror, disbelief, and sadness, as I expected, but a conflict of emotions. The only one I could name was shock.
She opened her mouth several times like she wanted to say something, but nothing came out of her mouth.
“It’s fine, Emily. I’ll tell John about it. You don’t have to…”
“No!” She suddenly shrieked, taking me aback. “No, no, no, no, no….” She denied vehemently. “You can’t do that. You can’t tell John. No, no one must know about it. It’s… it’s my secret. Mine to tell, mine to keep.” She said, sounding unstable.
“Why are you so worked up?” I asked, and she looked at me, with something like desperation in her eyes.
“He doesn’t know. He shouldn’t know. I’m serious. John doesn’t know, and I’d like to keep it that way.” She begged, and I blinked hard.
“John deserves to know. You know that?”
“No, no, I’ll be in deep trouble if he knows about it. Let’s just keep things this way. Please, just let’s not tell him. We can keep it. He doesn’t need to know about a pregnancy that didn’t develop.” She left me completely baffled with her words.
“How would you be in trouble? Why would you be in trouble for miscarrying his baby? You’re not married yet, and didn’t do it on purpose. You fell down the stairs. I saw you.”
“No, no. It can’t work like that.” She insisted softly, with her face becoming redder by the minute.
“Look Emily, you wouldn’t be in trouble for anything. It’s John’s baby. Maybe he’ll treat you better if he finds out you accidentally lost his baby, which you intended to keep.” I pointed out, and she closed her eyes, shaking her head slowly.
“Let’s not tell him.” She said, taking in deep breaths, like she was trying to control something.
“Do you really have to…”
“Let’s just not tell him.”
“Why? Why are you so desperate to keep the pregnancy a secret, and why are you also determined to keep this a secret?” I asked, and she bit her lip so hard that when she released it, I saw traces of blood.
Then she turned to me, still looking like she was holding herself back.
“You really want to know?” She asked, looking like she was trying to force the words out of her.
“Yes, I’d like to know. Otherwise I’m going to think it wasn’t John’s.” I said, feeling like I’d be really miserable if I confirmed that she actually slept around after that incident.
“You’re right.” She replied, and I was plain shocked. She of all people? How… how come? Why would she…
“I’m right?” I blurted out.
“It’s not John’s, it’s yours.”
