LUCAS’ POV.
My face morphed into a more serious one, and I leaned backwards to let him know that I was firm on it. Besides, it couldn’t be called an affair, since John’s greedy act couldn’t be called a marriage either.
A marriage was between two willing parties, who wanted to spend forever together, and an affair was what happened when one or both lovers had a legitimate lover.
“It’s not an affair.” I said, coolly. At that point, I couldn’t leave Emily for anything. The love between us was something John could never hope to provide. Tearing us apart would be dooming two individuals.
“You’re in love with a married woman, and I don’t know what you’re probably doing with her, but you should stop.
If this gets out somehow, you will suffer the most. You will take a huge hit, Granger or not.
An affair doesn’t look good on you. No, not with your reputation.
Aside from that, you shouldn’t forget the kind of marriage contract she signed.
It is the Alpha Marriage for crying out loud.
Do you think we want to lose you? Do you think she’ll go scot-free if anything happens to you?
” He asked, looking concerned, but I really didn’t need that concern at the moment.
All I needed was happiness, and with Emily, I found it already.
“Even if it gets out, I don’t know if I want to care. My only fear is her being taken away from me.” I said bravely, and he gave a heavy sigh.
“That shouldn’t be your fear. Your fear should be dying unexpectedly someday, without even being able to predict it.
I just hope you haven’t tried sleeping with her, and if you’re thinking of it, then I might do something I won’t like.
Don’t even think of loving her. It will kill you, Lucas.
In life, there are things we must learn to let go. ” He said, pushing his tea aside.
“Unfortunately, Emily isn’t a cup of tea I can just push aside. She isn’t someone I can leave just like that.”
“She’s not to be loved. She’s not to be slept with. Emily is John’s! A real man knows when to let go, Lucas.” He said, firmly, looking like he’d command me to leave the house anytime.
“I’m in love with her, and we’ve made love quite a number of times now.” I said, and shock passed through his eyes. He narrowed them, and stared at me like his eyes were a lie detector.
“Don’t lie to me.”
“We have slept together, Will. And I’m still here. I’m not dead. I’m completely fine. Actually, I think I’m not dying because me and John share the same blood.”
“There’s nothing like that. That’s not possible.”
“Well, it is. Siblings have never tried to steal each other’s spouses before, have they?’
“Do you really think it has never been tried? Of course, it has. Centuries ago, two siblings, Seth and Triode were twins, but Triode fell in love with his brother’s wife.
He claimed it was love at first sight, and even though she was married, there was nothing he could do.
Such foolishness led him to pretend to be his brother and sleep with her.
He died on the spot. Layette, the woman he slept with, who was innocent due to the fact that she was deceived, was punished.
Lucas. This is a warning. The family will not spare any outsider who ruins the family reputation, or causes the family to lose someone. Consider yourself warned.”
Will got to his feet, and left the café, just like that.
A question mark loomed at the back of my mind. What could be the reason for me not dying? Had John gotten cold feet in the end, and fabricated the papers? Was everything fake? Did he just do it hoping to scare us?
Fabricating the papers, or signing the real ones were both stuff that John was well capable of doing.
John was ruthless, and didn’t care for anyone’s happiness except his. Ever since he was young, he had always wanted things to go his way, and fortunately for him, he had always been given what he wanted.
I could also understand Will. Even though our family wasn’t one to shower love and affection on each other openly, the love was still there. Others just couldn’t see it easily.
My conclusion to the burning question was that John had not done it well. There was probably a mistake somewhere. Either that, or something was wrong with the story Will told me.
The green light came on in the distance, and I slowed to a stop. Emily and I would work it out somehow. Me not dying yet was hope that a way out might be waiting for us.
I also had to be careful, and maybe the best thing to do was to refrain from sleeping with her for the time being. At least, until I figured what was happening.
Just then, I happened to look towards the hospital. It was where I had rushed Sadie to when she had fallen.
I looked away, but did an instant double take, for there was someone familiar walking out.
It was Emily. What was she doing in a hospital? Sadie was no longer there. What did she go there for?
Slowly, I pulled onto the side of the road, and parked the car.
“Emily coming from the hospital?” I asked myself, as I stepped out of the car. She couldn’t be pregnant, could she?
If she was, then I’d have to be extra-vigilant because I didn’t think John would mind going to the extreme to get rid of a baby that wasn’t his.
I walked towards her, but she didn’t even notice me. She was staring at the ground, walking a little too slowly.
She was lost in her world of thoughts.
“Emily.” I called, and her shoulders jumped. She looked at me, and a wan smile appeared on her face.
“Going to work?” She asked, looking at me with pale eyes.
“Yes, are you okay? You look a little pale, and weak.” I observed, looking at the little sweat that had matted some of her hair to her temple and cheeks.
“Me? I’m fine.” She said, in a low breathy tone.
However, in contrast to her words, she fell against me, sinking fast to the ground, until I caught her in my arms.
She wasn’t fine.
