Page 138 of One Nightstand With My Ex's Uncle
JOHN’S POV.
That day, two men had come with their documents, wanting to apply for the post of a personal assistant, which Katie had left open.
Seeing them, and noticing their little faults here and there, only made me miss Katie all the more.
She was efficient in all the ways one could imagine.
She always had an answer prepared for every question.
In some ways, she had become a friend, and her absence made me feel completely alone—like there was no one on my side.
Due to the two men having different faults, I hired them both, so they could complement each other. What the first one didn’t have, the second could make up for it.
But I had to agree that both of them were good at picking drinks. I had told them I needed something really strong, and they provided just what I needed.
I needed to think hard on my next move. Emily seemed to be completely drawn to Lucas.
She was fine with me not talking to her, fine with us not crossing paths, even when she didn’t see me for a whole day, I suspected she was happy.
I was slowly disappearing from her world.
In a matter of time, I wouldn’t matter to her. Not even the marriage would matter.
My only comfort was that I had ruined whatever hopes of a romantic relationship she could have with Lucas.
Only if she wanted him dead would she disregard it, and it would actually be better for me if he dropped dead.
I didn’t need him. He was the one immovable obstacle in my way, but not to worry, I was working swiftly on a way to move him, and finish him completely.
My new assistants and I branched to a small restaurant that night, and ordered more drinks. I needed to drink myself to stupor before returning to my lonely mansion.
They ordered squid roasted in pepper, and fish cakes, and poured drinks for me.
“Here. The sauce is very good.” Landon, one of them said, and I dipped a fish cake into the red tomato sauce.
I tasted it, and nodded.
“You come here often?” I asked, munching sweetly on the fishcake.
“No, I do.” Rebal replied, with a grin. “Coming here is best to drink and eat your sorrows away.”
“Who says I’m sad?” I asked.
“You need to tell us anything that’s going on with you, so you don’t feel alone. Personal assistants are personal so they can help in areas others can’t.” Landon said, and he actually made some sense.
“You’re right. Well, you all probably know me, and my love story.” I began.
“Yes, we do.” They replied.
“Hmm.” I threw another fishcake into my mouth after dipping it in sauce.
“Well, everything you know about my life from a few days to me and my wife’s initial marriage date is a fake.
There was no extension, she called off the engagement, and the marriage.
” I said, and they stopped eating. “She no longer loves me, and I forced her into marrying me. I’m quite the bad guy right? ” I asked, with a laugh.
“No. If it was for the family reputation, then you were only doing what a man would do.” Landon said.
“I made her sign the Alpha Marriage because I still love her.”
“I would do more.” Rebal said, with a chuckle.
“She loves my Uncle. I don’t know what’s going on between them, but they always seem to be together.” I said, and Landon snorted.
“She’s yours, Mr. Granger. You shouldn’t watch your Uncle—or whoever he is— snatch her from you.” He said.
“Landon is quite right. You should prove there’s only one man for her, and that’s you. After all, you already did the Alpha Marriage. Take control of it, and everything. She’s yours.” Rebal said, and I smiled.
I had found myself good assistants. I was no longer alone.
“Cheers to a new beginning.” I said, holding up my glass, and the noise of our glasses clinking together was quite loud.
We drank bottoms up straight, and the alcohol tasted sweet. Maybe because I didn’t feel so alone anymore. There wasn’t just one person on my side, but two more.
“You both just got lucky. Katie doesn’t know the amount of money she lost. You have families?” I asked.
“I have a family. We’re quite much.” Rebal said, a little embarrassed.
“How many?”
“Eight kids, and a wife.”
“Damn, you’re still young, how did you end up with that number?” Landon asked shocked, and we all laughed.
“Wife gave birth to triplets first, two years later, the twins came, three years after that, another set of twins, and just last year, she got the last boy.” He said, and I smiled.
“Your family just held onto a branch of gold. Every member of your family will get a monthly pay from me, and the money will all go to you.” I said, and he stood up immediately, bowing ninety degrees.
“Thank you, Alpha!” He shouted.
“Oh come on, come on, don’t do that. You, Landon? Got a family?” I asked, and Rebal retook his seat, looking utterly grateful.
“A girlfriend.” Landon replied smiling.
“Then your girl is lucky she got you. I’ll give both of you according to your needs, okay, and that doesn’t mean you wouldn’t be swimming in money, Landon. You’ll have more than you want. So, what can we do about my Uncle? Any ideas?” I asked, and smiles lit their faces.
~
“Emily!” I called drunkenly, as I staggered into the house.
Everywhere was dark. Was it that late?
“Emily!” I called again, and a lamp I hit, crashed to the floor, with a loud sound.
Several maids rushed out, and tried to hold me, but I shook them off me.
“Where is my wife? The wife I wed! She’s mine! Damn it, where is she!?” I asked, and they held onto my arms.
“Alpha John, you’re drunk. You need to get some rest.” One of them said, holding on to me firmly.
“I’m not drunk. No I’m not. Don’t tell me I’m drunk!” I slurred, trying to walk away from them, but they held fast onto me. They took me to my room, and laid me on my bed, taking off my socks, and shoes.
“You need some rest. In the morning, we’ll prepare something to help with the hangover.” One of them said, and they all left.
“I’m not some kid who doesn’t know what he wants.” I said, getting to my feet. I went to my shelf, and took out a bottle of wine. “You’re dead, Lucas. I’m coming for you.” I said, staggering to the desk, where I clumsily poured wine into a glass.
Walking out into the lonely hall, to continue my search for Emily, I stumbled across the hall window.
Making my way over to the open window, I let the air move through my hair and clothes freely.
“I said you’re dead.” I repeated, looking over the garden, where I happened to spot two figures, standing in a clearing surrounded by rose bushes.
Emily and Lucas.
Lucas was saying something, and Emily tipped back her head in laughter.
“Damn you!” I spat, walking away from the window carelessly, the wine tipping over in the glass. I made my way down the stairs, and got to the bottom, managing not to trip and fall.
How dare he!
Was it romantic? Telling sweet jokes to a married woman under the moonlight in the garden? Did he enjoy it?
Well, it was only for a short moment. My new comrades had given me something that would help get him out of the way.
I made my way out the door, and stepped out onto the cold night barefoot. I threw my glass of wine onto the ground, and made my way over to the garden.
Looking around, as I swayed dangerously, I tried to find them.
“There you are.” I said, as I spotted Lucas’ head. I walked towards them, and was about to barge in, but stopped when I heard what Emily was saying.
“…in the kitchen, in the car, you forgot to mention here in the garden.”
“No. The garden is canceled. The night after your wedding, remember?”
“Oh!” She said, and giggled. “That’s canceled. We still have the car, the kitchen, where else?” She asked.
“Anywhere else.” Lucas replied, and placed a hand on her cheek. She blushed.
Wait, were they about to confirm that they were lovers? That they were having an affair?? Even with the Alpha marriage!?
“We start tonight. Right here.” Emily said, shyly.
“You’re beautiful, and I think you’re the best thing that ever happened to me. I love you.” Lucas replied.
Since when did it start? Since when did Emily and him get together? After the wedding? Before the wedding? Damn him! I would kill him if they truly were…
But of course, they wouldn’t dare do more than that, right? They could only declare silly affections for each other, but they would never go far. They won’t sleep with each other, and they won’t lust after each other, or Lucas would die.
They couldn’t defeat me. No matter what, they would never…
I stopped, and my insides froze in shock.
Their lips met.
