Page 70 of One Nightstand With My Ex's Uncle
EMILY’S POV.
We both stopped, and from the corner of my eye, I could see Sadie tense up. My lips trembled, and my heart rate began to pick up slowly, but steadily, gradually rising to maniacal beating.
How did it happen that we were discussing such problematic matters in the living room?
“Did you both see a ghost?” Mandy asked, smoothing her satin evening gown.
“What?” Sadie asked, breathily.
“You both are sent for. Dinner’s about to start.” She said, and looked from my face to Sadie’s, before turning around, and walking back out the door.
“Do you… do you think she heard anything? She didn’t, did she? Did she look like she heard us saying something?” I asked, with my eyes trained on the door like it would swing open again.
“I don’t know. I’m just as clueless as you are.”
“What was the last thing we said?” I asked, suddenly forgetting the last thing I had said.
“You and the pregnancy.”
“Oh my God, oh my, oh my, this isn’t good.” I said, getting up, and placing my hands behind my head,
“Stop overreacting.” Sadie said, getting to her feet.
“This is all your fault. You know that? Why do you have to be so annoying? It’s not something you should be proud of. You should go to church, and pray to be blessed with a new attitude. Anyway, we have to talk about the pregnancy stuff. You’re going to tell me how you know about it, and since when. For now, we have dinner.” I said, and walked out of the living room.
As I approached the family dining under the light of the moon, my heart seemed to thunder in my chest.
What if Mandy had said something to them? Did she hear? If she did, had she been listening enough to understand?
Would she come to me? No, if she heard, she’d have been shocked, and she would talk about it because she’d be unable to hold her surprise.
Lucas and I sleeping together was the last thing anyone would expect or imagine.
I took an empty seat next to Lucas, and the family was too busy talking, and eating to notice.
“Okay, finally. We have a really full house. John is here, Lucas is here, and they also have suitable partners. Lucas, Mandy is a great lady. Don’t look at how she behaves. People like her have the kindest hearts.” Lady Genevieve said, and Lucas chuckled.
“Not interested.” He said, curtly, and she threw a potato at him, which he caught grinning.
“Look at you. You’re not getting younger, are you?” Alpha Raymond said.
“Maybe he has his eyes on another.” John said, chewing his steak slowly, as he stared at his plate.
“Is that true?” Alpha Will asked, and Lucas smiled.
“What makes you think I have my eyes on someone?” Lucas asked, and John raised his head.
“You tell me.”
“You’re not even sure.” Lucas said, and poured water for himself.
“So, do you?” Mandy asked.
“None of your business.” Lucas replied.
“It’s not Katie, is it?” Derella asked, and Lucas smiled.
“Oh my God. You like Katie?” Lady Mira asked.
“He never said that.” Sadie interrupted. “You all are sending flecks of spit my way. Can we all not talk?” She asked, with a frown.
“Why should you tell us what to do?” Lady Genevieve asked.
“It’s manners. John taught me.” Sadie said, and John raised a brow.
“Nice.” He said, flatly.
“You’re glowing today, Mandy. Don’t worry about Lucas, he’ll come around.” Lady Genevieve said, and Mandy smiled.
“I’m glowing? I was about to ask you what to do to glow as you do. You’re a beauty, Lady Genevieve. It’s like you don’t age.” Mandy said, blushing, and Lady Genevieve laughed.
“You are something else.” She said, and I tried hard to stop myself from rolling my eyes.
I began to cut my steak, and Lucas flicked my hand with his finger.
“Look at the way you hold your knife.” He said, with a little chuckle, and I laughed. The knife was bending instead of being straight on the steak.
“I was absentminded.” I said, smiling, and caught Alpha Will’s eyes on me. My smile faded.
“Emily, why aren’t you sitting next to John?” I heard Lady Mira ask. Apparently, she had also noticed.
“The seat was taken already.” I said, immediately, and she looked at Mandy.
“Then you should do well to switch. And Derel, drop your phone. We’re at dinner.” Lady Mira said, and Derel dropped his phone, looking sulky.
I got up from my chair, pushed it backwards, and took my plate. Mandy did the same, and we switched positions. It was so hard to hide the frown on my face, so I didn’t bother looking up. I simply stared down at my food like it was the only place to look at.
Then John placed his hand on mine, rubbing it with his thumb. My immediate reaction was to try to shake it off, but I caught Alpha Will watching me.
“Now, it’s perfect.” Lady Genevieve said, and I hated the feel of John’s soft fingers on mine. They were the fingers he had used to hold Katie and his other whores.
He knew I was annoyed and he reveled in my anger, and annoyance. Then, he had the guts to place a peck on my cheek, and smiled at me, knowing I was trying not to burst.
“Behave.” I said, under my breath, and he laughed, holding onto my hand more securely.
“This hand is mine.” He whispered to me, and I tried hard not to roll my eyes.
The dinner was an uncomfortable one, and even though Lucas didn’t show interest in any of the passes Mandy made at him, it still made me annoyed.
I didn’t know why, but I felt protective of him. He was nice to me, and I wanted him to be nice to me alone.
Immediately after the dinner, I left John’s side, and grabbed Sadie’s tiny wrist, leading her away.
“I never said I’m not going with you. You don’t have to drag me or everyone might think something’s going on.” She said, rolling her eyes, and I left her wrist.
We both made our way to my room where I locked the door.
Sadie folded her arms, sitting on my bed, and staring at me like she didn’t care if I blew up.
“How did you know about the pregnancy? And why would you ever think of using it to blackmail me?” I asked, and she rolled her eyes.
“I overheard you both at the hospital.”
“Hospital? How is that possible? That is totally impossible.” I said, and she rolled those large eyes again.
“Remember I told you I skipped school recently. Yeah, it was that day, and I happened to see Lucas coming out of a grocery store with fruits. I called as loud as I could, but he seemed to be in a hurry, and didn’t hear me, so I followed him. He walked into the hospital, and my curiosity got the better of me. I followed, pointing to everyone who stared at me that I was with him. At the door, I stopped, and listened to the both of you talking. Then he asked what you were going to do when everyone saw you were pregnant. That’s what I heard, and when I heard it.” She explained, and it just seemed so annoying.
“So you were so happy that you found something else to blackmail me with? How convenient.”
“You’re talking like you didn’t know this is the kind of person I am.” She said.
“Well now because of your stupid childish mind, Mandy could have as well overheard us.” I said, angrily.
“How is that my fault?” Sadie retorted.
“How is it not your fault? You just have to have your way, don’t you?” I accused, and just then, there was a knock at the door. We froze.
Sadie jumped off the bed, and went to the door.
“Who’s there?” She asked, but there was no response, so she pushed the door open, and standing there was none other than our current headache.
Mandy.
