LUCAS’ POV.

We all shook hands, and Emily was introduced to Alpha Romeo and his family.

Emily stayed respectful, and polite, but I could see vividly that she still wasn’t in her best of moods.

We all sat down, and they began to decide on the menu. I glanced at Emily who sunk into quietness, and gloom. Since we had returned from the hospital, she had been even more gloomy and suspicious.

No one needed to tell me that she was avoiding me. She was particularly careful about that. We almost never met each other in the hallways, and she never ate at the dining room.

Something was wrong with her, but I had no idea what.

A wide smile appeared on her face as Hamilton, the Alpha’s son threw her a question.

“I’m from this pack.” She replied, smiling.

“Oh, I thought you were married as a kind of alliance.” He probed, and she shook her head slowly with a graceful smile.

“John and I started as friends. We have been fond of each other since our college days.” She replied, and I could see her fingers twisting themselves behind the bowl of cookies in front of her.

“Oh, you got married for love. How romantic.” Hamilton said, and his sister gave a low chuckle.

“Why isn’t he here?” She asked, in a slow, honey drip voice.

“He’s…” Emily began.

“Currently on a business trip. Do you need to know?” Sadie replied, before Emily could.

“I wasn’t asking you.” Henning, Hamilton’s sister replied, with a smile.

“If you were married to John, the first thing you’d know is not to look down on my age. Unfortunately, you were not.” Sadie replied menacingly, and the elders seemed to notice the conversation with the younger ones had become icy.

“It’s also unfortunate that your age is not the only thing to look down on. There is your inexperience, and of course, your height.” Henning replied, applying her venom sweetly.

“My what? You’re looking down on my height when you still need giant heels to support yours at your age? In a few years, I’ll be looking down at the crown of your head which will be balding by then.” Sadie replied.

“Sadie.” Alpha Romeo called softly. “Don’t mind dear Henning. She’s a little sensitive since she didn’t get to marry John.” He replied, and I knew it was his way of rubbing it on the family’s face that John married a commoner instead of someone with power.

The food was served in elegant white dishes, and I could see Emily growing more uncomfortable at each turn.

“So, what can you do for John?” Lady Hanna, the old woman asked Emily, and Emily smiled.

“I might not be able to do much in the eyes of others, but for John, everything I’m doing is all he wants me to do.” She replied, sweetly, and Lady Hanna reddened.

“Young love doesn’t last. You know that?” Lady Sara, Alpha Romeo’s wife pointed out.

“I’ll be grateful even when it ends because the days in which it lasted are days John and I will be forever grateful for. As of now, we don’t have to worry. We’re leaving the future to handle its matters.” She replied, and I caught a tiny smile on Genevieve’s lips.

“I can give John power. I can give him money, authority, respect, love. What can you give him?” Henning asked, with her hazel eyes on her plate of steak.

“Unfortunately, a man needs more than that, and even more unfortunately, John has all that, meaning there’s nothing more you can give him.” Emily replied, and I could see Genevieve was pleased. Even Raymond was.

It proved Emily to be more than someone to be walked over. Did John also find that attractive? She was in a way, proud of who she was, and even of the things she couldn’t offer.

“What?” Henning replied, almost sharply.

“Above all things, I can give John support, emotionally, and mentally. I can comfort him when he’s weary, motivate him when he’s down. Merely at the sight of my face, I can cast his frowns away. Smiling, and reminiscing our young days is something that can bring light to his heart.

“Also, you can’t give him love because a one-sided love is not the love that a marriage requires. I can give him that. Together, we can grow out of love, and not just out of a contract. I can give John peace, and happiness, and with that, he’ll soar to heights he’s never dreamed of.” Emily replied, and finally Genevieve’s smile showed on her face.

“You have a remarkable young lady as John’s wife.” Alpha Romeo noted. “She is confident. I like it. Confidence… A Confident Luna will raise an Alpha up.” He added, looking like he had been taken aback a little.

Usually, people without powerful backgrounds lacked the amount of confidence Emily exhibited. It was what we all were used to.

“Well, I wish them well. So when is their marriage?” Lady Henna asked.

“It is entirely up to them.” Alpha Raymond replied, but I knew they would want to hasten up the wedding.

I was wondering what Emily was planning to do. It was great as she defended our family, so it didn’t seem like they made a bad choice, but it complicated things further.

She and John were no longer engaged. Except she planned to accept him again.

Later that evening, Tray and I sat grilling barbecue over drinks, and I told him about Emily, and how weird she had been.

“If I were to advice you, you should start from the beginning, the root.” He said, swirling the drink in his glass drunkenly.

“Which is?” I probed, taking a sip of my drink.

“The hospital. You should start from there. That’s when she started acting super weird right? Oh gosh, I think I’m drunk.” Tray said, cleaning his eyes.

“Where’s your secretary? I begged her to steal some snacks for me earlier.” He said, getting to his feet, and just then, Katie emerged from the glass doors with a large bag of the snacks Tray liked.

“There she is.” I replied, and when she got to him, Tray stood and swayed, falling against her, as she tried to hold him steady.

“You should thank yourself for me.” He said, standing upright, and Katie chuckled.

“I’ll assist you in taking him home.” She said, and placed Tray’s arm around her shoulder. I didn’t stop her.

I simply followed her to Tray’s car.

I opened the door of the backseat, and she put him inside.

“My snacks. Also make sure to check the hospital.” Tray said, collapsing on the backseat, with his bag snacks on his chest.

Katie opened the door to the front seat, and I sat behind the wheel. A brief glance at her, and I saw she had a sweet smile on her face.

We drove Tray home, while listening to him mumbling to himself at intervals, giving advice I didn’t need since Katie was in the car.

I dropped him in his bed, and pulled the covers around him.

“Seriously man, you need a woman or a maid to look after you.” I said, tucking him in neatly.

“A maid belongs in a mansion.” He said, turning to his side.

“I’ll get one for you. You shouldn’t be alone.” I replied, pushing in his leg which he had stuck out.

On the way home, Katie stared at the glistening rain, which was beginning to pour lightly outside.

“Sadie’s getting really big. I recall when she was nothing more than that little girl over there.” She said, pointing to a restless little girl tugging on her mother’s hand while laughing.

I was able to glance at her happy face for a moment before the green light was back on.

“Unfortunately, she was never as innocent.” I replied, making Katie laugh softly.

“Sadie has always been a little devil right from her young days.” She commented.

“I wonder who she got that from. I don’t recall anyone ever having that nasty attitude.” I said, smiling, and she burst into laughter.

“She’s her mother. Only she is ten times more.” She replied, and we both burst into laughter.

I took Katie home, and she thanked me for the ride. When I got to the mansion, I made my way to my room, and the first thing I did was drop my coat, and tug on the buttons of my shirt.

I took a warm shower, and basked in its warmth, and comfort having made up my mind to ask Emily about whatever was wrong with her. If she was sick, then the doctor should have known about it.

John wasn’t around and I didn’t think she was being bullied by anyone. Maybe Sadie was being her biggest bully at the moment, but she wasn’t enough for Emily to sink into such a state of depression.

The next morning, I walked out of my room to have a rather late breakfast since I wasn’t going to the company.

I happened to see Emily moving towards the stairs. She didn’t see me, and didn’t notice me either, not until she was about going down.

She didn’t look at me, but she knew I was watching her. Then she suddenly placed her hand on her mouth, and I was about walking towards her, but she took a rash step down the first stair, and to my horror, she put her foot down wrongly, and fell.

Her scream was loud, shrill, and fearful, but before I could get there, she was already at the foot of the stairs, which her legs spread in an unnatural angle.
