Page 112 of One Nightstand With My Ex's Uncle
EMILY’S POV.
“That’s fine. Maybe I’ll be able to forgive you if you stop trying to act like we’re still a thing in front of people. The flowers, and the kiss did nothing, but embarrass me.” I said, hoping I didn’t sound flustered.
Because I was definitely flustered. I didn’t expect him of all people to apologize.
“It’s out of habit. Pardon me.” He said, and I turned around to sleep, raising the blanket over my head because I hated the thought of him staring at me.
He chuckled, and I wondered if all the resentment was over between us. Were we no longer enemies? No longer people who hated each other? It felt weird—not being enemies with John.
We couldn’t be friends. I was sure of that, but maybe we could be people who didn’t avoid and try to step on each other.
It was really weird thinking we could be anything other than angry exes.
Maybe I didn’t actually need enemies in my life. Maybe it was what would help my life become better.
We were on the altar, and he had slipped a diamond ring onto my finger.
“Will you marry me?” He asked, and I had blushed hard.
“I will.” I said, smiling, and applause came up from the people. I looked at them. Lady Genevieve, Alpha Will, Alpha Raymond, Lady Mira, the children, Dahlia, Leah and Tommy, and… Lucas.
It felt a little weird seeing Lucas there, but he was so happy that I didn’t notice.
And immediately after the wedding, John took me into a dark house, and dragged my arm.
“What’s wrong with you?” I asked, as our shadows danced on the wall by the flickering light of a candle, but he smiled mischievously. I tried to run, feeling terrified by whatever he had in mind to do to me, but he grabbed my hair, and dragged me across the cold, marble floor.
I didn’t know what happened next, but I screamed loud.
I opened my eyes abruptly, and saw John sleeping innocently next to me. I was never one to disregard dreams completely. Even though I tried to ignore the ounce of truth in them, I always ended up returning to them.
Maybe my inner self was trying to tell me not to fall for him again, not to fall for his tricks. He might be sorry now, and all sweet and affectionate, but it couldn’t get rid of the monster in him.
He himself had said it. He couldn’t guarantee that he wouldn’t become that monster again.
I sat up, and ran a hand through my hair.
Looking at John, I sighed. No, I shouldn’t let my guard down. Not even for a moment.
I saw my phone with his on the bedside table, and snatched it quickly. It was cold, and seemed to be dead, but luckily, it wasn’t.
I left the room, scrolling through my call log.
No missed calls.
That was weird. I felt someone should have at least reached out to me. Didn’t anyone miss me?
I decided to update Dahlia about the news.
She didn’t pick the call, and I wondered if she was busy. I really wanted to talk to her though. So instead I went to the kitchen, and got myself busy with making bagels.
Shortly after I got the first one ready, I received her call.
“Hey, Dahlia.” I said in excitement.
“Hi sweetie. I saw your call. I was out.”
“How are you doing?”
“I’m doing fine, and you? I’m already back to the house, and I’m missing a full house already.”
“Really? Well, make sure you visit soon. I’m dying to see you.”
“I will visit as soon as I find the time. I’m working on having something to do. Something to keep myself busy, and to earn money. I shouldn’t sit around waiting for noise to fill the house again.” She said, and I smiled.
“Maybe you’ll live with me when I’m free from John.”
“Oh yeah, what’s going on with you both now? You’re on the trip, right?”
“Yes, and… he apologized to me last night.”
“Don’t get swayed. It can be a plan to get you back in his possessive grasp.” She said, and I raised a brow.
Maybe it was what my dream had been trying to communicate to me.
“You think that?”
“Yes! If he could go to that extent while you were dating, then he can do more if you get married. Don’t let him fool you again, Emily. Once bitten, twice shy. You’ve been bitten once, be careful.”
“Great advice, Dahlia.” I said, smiling, and heard John coming down from the stairs. “So, uh, we’ll talk later, right? He’s coming.” I said, adding the last two words in a whisper, and she laughed.
“Give him a punch in the guts for me.” She said, and I laughed.
“Of course, I’d love to do just that. Remember, I’ll be expecting you. Even if it’s in a month’s time, or two, I’ll be expecting you.” I said.
“I will definitely visit. Bye, sweetheart.”
“Bye.” I said, and before I could end the call, John took the phone from me. I turned and folded my arms, giving him a hard stare.
“The call ended already, didn’t it?” He said, but I simply turned around, taking my bagel, and a loaf of bread I had placed in front of me to chew on earlier.
The morning was bright, and in a few minutes, John came with cups of tea, and scrambled eggs.
“Egg sandwich?” He asked, fixing the eggs into the bread.
“Yeah.” I replied, and waited to take it from him.
He gave it to me with a smile, and I took a bite, then sipped on my tea.
“It’s bright today. I don’t think it would be snowing.” He said, and I nodded slowly.
Just then, my phone lit up, and began to ring. I leaned over to look at it, and a smile broke out on my face, upon seeing who was calling.
Lucas!
“It’s…” I began, but John snatched the phone before I could take it. He ended the call, and placed my phone on airplane mode.
Just like that.
