Page 44 of One Nightstand With My Ex's Uncle

EMILY’S POV.

The next morning, my head thrummed like lots of instruments were playing in it. I stumbled out of bed, and groaned. I needed something to help my headache.

My sweatshirt was still stained with pepper from the salmon, and I wondered why I hadn’t taken it off. I went to the kitchen to get some lemon tea that could help, but the maids had no lemon tea, they only had coconut water. It helped a bit.

“Here. Eat this before the family comes around for breakfast.” Kaye said, handing me an omelet with veggie.

“Aww, you’re so sweet.” I said, picking it up, and digging my teeth into it. “Hm, this is sooo good. I feel so hungry, despite all the salmon you guys made last night. By the way, those salmon hit the spot. It felt like they were restaurant-cooked.” I complimented, and she blushed.

“I had a major role in the grilling of the salmons, and preparing the ingredients.” She said, and I laughed, then drank more coconut water.

“I’m never drinking apple cider again. It’s so sweet, but I can’t remember a thing from yesterday night.” I said, munching on the meal happily.

John wasn’t there to scold her for serving me food. He was probably somewhere traditional, and I hoped that wherever he was, he had to climb a mountain everyday.

“You and Alpha Lucas were outside for a while after the children went to sleep.” She said, and I stopped.

“The both of us alone?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Why?” I asked, and she looked at me like ‘are you seriously asking me that?’ “When did we come in?” I asked, drinking more coconut water.

“I don’t know that. I went to sleep early. These days we’ve been sleeping really early since Alpha John isn’t around. I think I like Alpha Lucas more. He treats us as human maids, not robot maids.” She said, and the both of us began to laugh.

Then, another maid came in, and greeted me with a smile.

“Kaye, let’s lift the tables together. Everyone is busy doing something.” She said.

“What do they want to eat?” Kaye asked, bustling into them kitchen.

“They didn’t say.”

“They?” I asked, turning to look at her. “Did Alpha Lucas bring friends? Or are the children here again? Jeez, why wouldn’t they just stick to their mansions?” I asked, with my mouth full of omelets.

“The family’s coming here for breakfast.” Kaye said, coming out from the kitchen.

“What? Why didn’t you tell me?” I asked, getting to my feet.

“I did. I told you to eat this before the family came for breakfast.”

“Oh shit! They shouldn’t see me in shorts.” I exclaimed, jumping out of my chair, and away from the dining.

I ran into Katie who seemed to be coming from the door. The funniest thing was that I didn’t know if she actually had a room at the house or not. I didn’t know if she went home or most nights, or just stayed in the house.

She was with a bag, and had a blue suit on. She looked at my denim shorts like she was about to say secretaries ought not to be wearing that, but she dared not say that.

I wasn’t a secretary twenty-four seven, and I got to wear what I liked because I was living with my ex— who had no more feelings for me— and his Uncle who wouldn’t bat an eyelid even if a girl in a bikini was approaching him.

I rushed past her without a greeting, and raced up the stairs to my room. What was I to wear? Almost all my casual clothes were nothing official. Bum shorts, short jumpers, mini skirts, large joggers that made me look like I was thrown in them, and even larger sweatshirts.

The family were prim and proper people who believed ladies should always be dressed elegantly just like Katie.

Actually, I wouldn’t mind if Katie got married to John, even though I knew she liked Lucas. She was better than the talkative Mandy.

Wait, wait, wait, could it be that she had been so depressed because she was sleeping with John even though she liked Lucas? Whoa, she knew it would demean her worth in front of Lucas who thought of her as a reserved lady. It would also definitely ruin her chances of being with him.

Wow… maybe those were the thoughts that had occupied her head. However, with John gone, she had little worries.

I had her all figured out.

With a smile, I searched for one of my suit pants, and tugged them on, together with a sweatshirt. It was still better than sweatpants, and large t-shirts, since I hopefully had no work to do.

It was only after being fully dressed that I realized I was yet to take my bath. I groaned, and threw myself onto the bed.

They arranged a large table with chairs, right in front of Lucas’ mansion, and had drinks. I wondered why they had to see my face, but Katie insisted on it.

She had taken her blue jacket off, and looked better, as she wasn’t too official.

We greeted the family, and they sent fake smiles my way. I could tell they weren’t really pleased to see me.

“What would you like to eat?” One of the maids asked, with a bright smile.

“Why don’t the secretaries cook? I don’t know why I love seeing them together. It’s like experienced, and na?ve; prim, and improper; reserved, and….um… loose?” Lady Mira asked and burst into laughter. They followed in her laughter, even though it wasn’t funny.

“What’d I miss?” Lucas asked, coming out of the house in a casual sweatshirt, and shorts.

I bet they didn’t see him as improper.

“Nothing, darling. We only wanted to accompany you since you all must be feeling so lonely without John.” Lady Genevieve said. “So, Katie, what do you think you could prepare for us?”

“I’d prefer it if you told us what you want. You are the ones to eat and enjoy the food. It’s your opinion over ours.” Katie replied, with a smile, and Lady Genevieve was obviously pleased.

“I’m craving Bruschetta Chicken, Lady Genevieve.” Sadie piped up.

“With cheese.” Derel added.

“Steamed Vegetables will be a must.” Alpha Raymond said.

“Caprese salad, and marinated olives.” Derella added. “Jude, add something.”

“Um… scrambled eggs?” Jude added.

“Any more ideas?” Katie asked.

“Not that I can think of.” Lucas replied.

“Forgive me. I wasn’t jotting things down.” She said, bringing out a tiny notepad from her pocket, but Kaye hurried towards her, and gave her a piece of paper.

“We have you covered.” She said, and Katie smiled at her.

“We’ll have breakfast ready soon.” Katie said, and we both went to the kitchen. We began to cook, and it was completely silent. Why would Katie smile at everything just like that? It made them think she was perfect. I had never seen a secretary cooking breakfast for the family.

Can you imagine how they were all so quick to voice out their opinions on what side dish should go with it?

“Last night, were you and Lucas all alone? You guys went somewhere together, right?” Katie asked, trying to sound casual, but I could see she needed my answer desperately.

“Why do you want to know? I don’t think it’s any of your business.”

“Well, sorry about that. I just wanted to know.”

“Well, you don’t need to know.” I retorted, denying her the answer she really wanted to hear.

“Did something happen? If something didn’t happen, then I don’t see why you’d be this worked up.” She said, calmly.

“Why? Are you sleeping with him too?” I asked, and she suddenly slammed the knife on the counter.

“Do you think I wanted to sleep with John?” She asked, in a dangerous tone, then she turned to me, with anger flashing in her eyes.

“You shouldn’t be so loud.” We suddenly heard Alpha Will say, and Katie was more startled than I was. She hit the bowl of cheese, and sent it spiraling to the floor.

“I’m so sorry.” She said, bending and picking the cheese off the floor.

I couldn’t seem to stop blinking, and my gaze bounced off all the things in the kitchen, avoiding Alpha Will’s gaze. How much had he heard? Me not answering Katie’s question seemed like something had gone on between me and Lucas.

And he’d probably know something was wrong between John and I if I knew he had slept with Katie.

“Emily.” He called, and I looked at him.

“Yes, Alpha Will.”

“I apologize on John’s behalf. He is very immature, and hard to work with. You must have been hurt, but I’ll plead with you not to go to other men to take away your pain.” He said, softly, and walked away, taking a bowl with him.

It was then I recalled that the last thing I had done before passing out last night was trying to kiss Lucas.

His words… there was no way he knew about our one-night stand, so it had to be the previous night.

I turned back to the cooking, and so did Katie. None of us said anything again, until we finished all the cooking, and throughout the cooking, I couldn’t help thinking that trying to kiss Lucas was more than a drunken desire.

For some reason, everything we had done together the previous night seemed to come back to me.

His smile…

his wet hair, and face.

His voice…

Why would Alpha Will tell me not to go to another man, while looking at me like he saw through me?

It was quite suspicious.

It felt like he was telling me to be careful with the way I interacted with Lucas.

He was right.

It was weird for us to have fun together at an arcade, a water park…

Immediately I was done with all the ingredients, I left Katie to it, and went to my room. I took deep breaths, and tried to shake thoughts of Lucas off my head.

“Emily, you need to stop whatever it is with Lucas. You need to. Okay, Alpha Will is currently the only member of the Granger family that seems to be on your side. He’s not mean, and not… Look, this will make you seem cheap, weak, and… Gosh! Stop thinking about Lucas, Emily. How can you be in this situation, and still have someone like him invade your thoughts? Stop! Oh gosh, this is bad. He’s another Granger who’s not openly mean.”

“Aww.” I heard someone say, and my door flew open.

Was she stalking me or what?

Damn Sadie.
