EMILY’S POV.

“You’re going to destroy who?” Lucas asked, “Emily?”

“Yes. Because no one gets in my way. I get what I want. She crossed me.”

“Who are you? Some rich Alpha’s daughter? Is your father known?” He asked, acting clueless. “I thought you were just some secretary John pitied and picked up because you opened your chest?”

“What?”

“I’m asking what you can do compared to what I can do. Are you that fearless that you have no regard for how the life of a woman like you can end quickly when she crosses the wrong person?” He asked, and Mandy took a step back, although I was pretty sure she didn’t intend to do that.

“What?”

“No one gets in your way, well, no one gets in mine too. I get what I want, and if you decide to cross me, then you’ll be destroyed too.”

“Now unveiling your true colors?” She finally asked, getting her tongue.

“I never hid it. Did I ever speak softly to you? It was there in plain sight for you to see. Jail is always open for women like you who don’t mind their business.”

“Are you threatening me?” She asked, with her voice breaking a little. She didn’t know whether to get angry, or scared. The emotions were conflicting, and reflecting in her eyes.

“Don’t step on my toes, Mandy. The family will always pick me over you, a nobody. Like I said, you are not too young for prison.” He said, and walked past her. Mandy stood there, staring at the spot he had just left.

She bit her lip hard, and seemed to take in deep breaths, trying not to let her fear show. She was probably wondering if she was to blow everything up, or keep quiet.

I watched quietly from the dark spot where I stood, and remained silent, as Lucas passed me by. Shortly after the had left, Mandy turned around, and left angrily.

Was that good for me or not? I couldn’t tell.

After being sure I wouldn’t run into any of them on the way, I left my hiding spot, and went back into the house. However, as I opened the door to the living room, I bumped into a maid.

“Ah, Miss Emily. I was looking everywhere for you.” She said, looking relieved.

“For me? Why? Is there a problem?”

“No, Mr. Granger wants to see you.” She replied.

“Oh, okay.” I said, crossing the living room, and bounding up the stairs. I took a right turn, only for her to call out to me.

“Not Alpha Lucas, but Alpha John.” She corrected.

“Oh.” I said, retracing my steps, and took the left corridor, which led to John’s rooms. He wasn’t in his bedroom, but in his study.

“You called for me.” I said, walking in.

“Yes, I did. I called because I just can’t sleep. I can’t think of anything else, but what seems to be going on.” He said, turning to me, with a glass of chilled beer in his hand.

“And what’s that?” I asked.

“What’s going on between you and Lucas? Was that story Mandy told about you and Lucas?” He asked, coming closer to me.

“Why does it bother you? We have nothing to do with each other anymore. I have only three years to work under you, and if I’m lucky, I only need to work a year, and if I can find the horrible amount of money you expect me to pay, I’ll pay it and be free.” I said, and it seemed to make him mad.

“Do you think you can escape from me?”

“Yes, I can. I think I have already.”

“No, you haven’t, Emily. What is going on between you and Lucas?”

“Ask him.” I said, fearlessly, even though he was overshadowing me, standing directly above me.

“You make me crazy! Damn you! Just spill it!” He shouted, and I almost stepped back in shock, but didn’t.

“Spill what? Why don’t you ask him?”

“Emily, just listen to me, and play the part of the good lover you always played!”

“Why should I? Do you take me for a fool or what?”

“I get you’re hurt, and…”

“I WAS hurt. Not now. I’m over you, John, and you should get it straight in your head.”

“You’re not over me.” He said, stressing each word.

“I am.”

“You’re not. Emily, this is just getting more complicated. Can we just make it simple? Just listen to me like you always did…”

“Hear yourself! You’re crazy. You’re just so obsessed with controlling everything around you. How could I not see that? How did you make me so crazed about you? Well, that was a huge mistake. A huge mistake I will never make again. If only I had met Lucas before you. He’s a thousand times better!” I spat, and he raised the hand holding the glass abruptly.

The beer splashed all around, drops falling on my face, but he stopped himself.

He wanted to hit me. Again. John wanted to hit me.

But he stopped himself.

“That’s it.” I said, shoving him backwards in anger, and turning around to leave his study.

I slammed the door, and made my down the hall feeling like I’d cry. He could have raised his hands on me.

I went back to my room, and stayed up all night hating myself for ever liking someone like him. He was an obsessed, controlling freak, who didn’t know when he had lost.

One thing was clear to me though. I was never going back to him.

The next morning, I was having breakfast all alone. Trying to eat before anyone came down. I had made myself a simple breakfast of bread and peanut butter, determined to avoid Mandy by all means.

But oops, she came down earlier than I expected. I stopped with the bread in between my teeth, and cut it slowly, as I watched her.

I dropped the bread, and chewed the one I had cut off, swallowing quickly.

“You’re eating? You’re even more annoying than I expected you to be.” She said, walking past me.

I didn’t say anything, but continued to eat, and it seemed to get her mad.

She suddenly turned back to me.

“You know what? Damn us both! I’m telling everyone now!” She screeched, and began to walk towards the door.

I choked, and spit the bread out of my mouth.

What?
