EMILY’S POV.
The next evening, after returning from work, I went straight to the maids’ quarters.
They all stopped what they were doing, and looked at me.
“Who among you did it?” I asked, and they looked puzzled.
“Emily, is something wrong?” Kaye asked me.
“Someone has been putting a drug into Lucas’ meals. The drug makes him unstable. A few of you saw what happened last night, didn’t you? He almost killed me. Me! Which one of you was doing it?” I asked, with my chest heaving heavily.
“It wasn’t me.” Kaye said.
“Me neither.” Another replied, and they all began to shake their heads.
“How many of you are in charge of cooking duty?” I asked, and about eight of them came out.
“Who did it? You should speak before I carry out my findings, and discover which one of you did it. Because I’ll be taking my evidence right to the cops, and you will be thrown behind bars.
Or what do you think the elders would do if they realize you have been spiking Lucas’ food with something that will doom him? ”
A maid threw herself at my feet, crying.
“Please, don’t. Please…”
She looked young. Maybe Nineteen.
“I’m begging you. Please, don’t.” She cried, holding on to me.
“When John asked you to spike Lucas’ food, why didn’t you report to someone else?” I asked, and she sniffed.
Slowly, she turned around, and unzipped her dress. It fell down, and her back was revealed. There… I saw a horrible sight. John’s name had been drawn all over her back. He had used his claws to dig and engrave his name onto her back.
“He… he did this for fun. Anytime anything doesn’t go his way, he calls for me, and does this. He told me he’ll kill me if I fail to feed his drug to Alpha Lucas every time he eats.” She cried, and my fingertips felt the marks.
My hard heart softened.
There was actually nothing I could do for her. John was set to be cruel, and he would stop at nothing.
“Lucas will not eat from the house anymore, so you can keep on putting it in. I’ll see if there’s anything I can do to dismiss you from here. What’s your name?”
“Malia.” She replied, and I nodded.
I made my way to Lucas’ room, and knocked.
“It’s me.” I said. “I just want to know if you’re okay.”
“I am.” His voice came from right behind the door.
“Have you eaten?”
“I grabbed a burger with Tray earlier.” His voice dropped lower.
“Why do you sound so down?” I asked, softly.
“John has a video of me hurting you.”
“He does?” My voice rose.
“Yeah. It looks really bad. I’m sorry I hurt you.” He replied, dejectedly.
“Lucas, don’t talk about that. Do you know what he’s going to do with that video? Shouldn’t you see him? Talk to him?”
“I’ll kill him if I do. Right now, I’m unstable, and I keep losing control each time I think about it. I have to find a way to control myself before talking to him.”
“I’ll report this to the family.”
“Don’t. They’ll only make things worse. The deed has been done. Emily, I’ll find something to do about it. Now, I want you to get some sleep.”
“Will you be going to work tomorrow?”
“I can’t. I’ll stay in here. Bye.” He said, and I heard him retreating.
I stayed at his door for quite a while, with tears in my eyes, and when I left, it was to see the elders.
At least, they would be able to pressure John for the antidote.
However, at the Raymond mansion, I was informed that he was busy.
“He’s busy?” I asked the maid.
“Yes, he and the other Elders have gathered together for a meeting.”
“A meeting?” I asked.
“Yes.” That was great. Having them all together was better.
“When did they gather together?”
“A few minutes ago. Alpha John wanted to see them.”
“John?” A frown creased my face.
“Let them be.” I heard Sadie say behind me, and I turned to her.
“They looked really serious when they walked in. Mom didn’t want me following her.
” She added. “Would you like to go out with me? Just take a break from the mansion. Trust me, you don’t want them taking out their frustrations on you. ” She said, and I sighed.
It was obvious John had told them about Lucas. I just didn’t know how accurate his tale would be.
Sadie and I took a cab, and paid him enough for him to drive slowly.
“Can I ask you a favor?” I asked, after we’d been riding for quite a while.
“What is it?”
“There’s a maid called Malia. She can’t quit working for us, but John assaults her in a wicked and unfair manner. Is there anything you think we can do to help her?” I asked, and she cocked her head to the side.
“If I say I like her, and want her to work for me, John will still be able to get her to himself. I don’t think…
wait. Maybe I can accuse her of doing something I don’t like, so mom would have her dismissed.
That would work quite well!” She said, gleefully.
“Then when she’s dismissed, I can arrange for her to be given a house far from here.
That seems like an interesting mission. Mission ‘Save Malia.’ Then I’d brag to my friends how I saved a maid, and helped her live a better life.
Don’t worry, Emily. I gat you covered.” She said, with a smile, and I laughed.
“Thanks. I hope you succeed in Mission ‘Save Malia.’”
“Of course, I would. After all, I succeeded in Mission ‘Match make Emily and Lucas.’ I’m Sadie Granger. Hold on, I got to take this call.” She said, taking out her phone.
“Derella.” She muttered, placing it on speakers, before picking the call.
“Sadie.” Came Derella’s restless voice. “Where are you? Do you know where Emily is? She’s not picking her calls.”
I searched my pockets, and realized my phone was back at home.
“She’s here with me. What’s wrong?” Sadie asked, alarmed.
“You need to come back right now! They’re saying Lucas will be locked away at some mental institute!”
“What!” I exclaimed.
