Page 63 of The Lost Ones
They must be Brent’s men; I have no idea who else would want me.
“How the fuck did he already find out I was here!” I ask no one in particular.
“We will trade your other team for her.”
We all share a look. So, Brent does have them, at least we can assume they’re alive if he wants to trade them for me, at least I fucking hope they are.
“How about you give us our team, we keep Sage and you can go fuck yourselves!” Levi shouts in return and I grin.
They start firing and the guys all curse, one of them has a machine gun, I mean come the fuck on, what the hell. We all start returning fire and I try not to think about the hits I’m making, these are bad men. Levi suddenly yells, and I panic throwing a quick glance in his direction and noting he’s only been grazed on his leg. Thank fuck it’s not worse. Following pure instinct, I focus on Levi’s bond thread and push healing energy down it as I continue to fire my gun. I glance over quickly when I hear him gasp and smile as Levi’s wound closes.
Brent’s men start to try and circle around us trying to block us in, but we manage to hold them back, the guys are excellent marksmen. Mygun runs out of ammo and I discard it quickly grabbing one of my knives and throwing it at the goon coming in from the right. My aim is true, and I ignore the sickness churning in my gut at ending someone’s life, even if they were a bad person. I remind myself that I don’t have a choice, it’s me or them. I use the rest of my knives until I’m down to my last one. I see a one of Brent’s men take aim at Hunters back, he’s not going to turn in time to stop the attack, before the goon can get a round off, I let my last knife fly. Hunter’s eyes widen as my knife flies by his ear. He glances behind him and sees the goon on the floor.
“Thanks Sage!” He yells over the gun fire.
“I’m out.” I shrug.
“Ok stay behind us.” He instructs me.
I nod in agreement.
We have been so focused on the fight in front of us that we don’t notice until it’s too late the men sneaking up behind us have managed to gain ground. I turn around to warn the guys of the encroaching danger.
“Guys behind us!” I yell a warning just as I’m grabbed, a gun pressed to my temple by the man behind me and another idiot pointing one at my chest.
All the gun fire stops as the guys stare at me in horror and Brent’s men realise, they have what they came for. Levi takes a step forward.
“One more step and I’ll shoot her!” The guy who grabbed me yells, all the while pulling me back towards their black sedan.
A third idiot pulls all of the guy’s weapons away from them. I try to convey with my eyes that I’ll be ok. They all look utterly furious.
It’s breath-taking.
“Back to the vehicles guys!” Idiot number two yells and the only guy capable of walking after the fight promptly jumps into the truck and speeds off.
“I can promise you; you will regret taking her.” Levi threatens, his voice deadly.
The idiot scoffs whilst dragging me along, his hold loosening slightly as we get to the car, I use his momentary distraction to seize his weapon. I disarm him and duck as the second goon fires a shot, all my guys start yelling and panicking. I upper cut the guy to my left before I turn and sweep my leg out to knock the other guy on his ass.
My men all race towards me but before they can reach me goon three raises his hand with the gun and brings it down hard on my temple. My eyes go unfocused and my head spins, just before everything goes dark, I hear my men cry out in anger.

I’m aware I’m dreaming even before I am fully conscious of where I am. My eyesight suddenly clears and I find myself standing in a sterilewhite box of a room. There are various machines lining the edges of the room and several trays of shining stainless steel instruments that look absolutely terrifying. This whole situation is made more terrifying by my strange familiarity with them. In the middle of the sterile white box room, is a steel table with deep grooves running around the edge and four thick leather cuffs, two at the top and two at the bottom, used to hold someone down.
Something about this room tugs at a memory and I shudder with dread. This is not a good place. Two men enter the room, one an aging man with a pot belly in a doctor’s coat and the other a more refined man in his mid-forties wearing an expensive tailor-made business suit. They don’t seem to be able to see me. So, I listen to their conversation, sensing that, unfortunately I need to know this.
“Are you any closer?” The man in the business suit demands.
“Well everything we’ve tried so far hasn’t worked, we need to start doing more severe experiments and see if that brings out her powers, they have somehow been bound and I’m unable to find out how.” The doctor smiles maliciously.
“Very well, have the healer on standby for when you’re done, I have a feeling we are going to have to memory wipe her eventually.”
My heart stops, they can’t possibly be talking about me, can they? Deep down I know they are, I think I’m just asking out of hope now.
“Bring her in!” The doctor shouts into the hall.
“Let me know your findings doctor.” The man in the business suit instructs, before walking out the door.
