I nod. “My parents don’t live in the packhouse. They built their own little house.”
“Your father is a pack warrior?”
I nod, feeling proud. “He is one of the head warriors.”
“And your siblings?”
“My brother is only 16, so we will see. He is very strong and tall, though. But my sister is the future Alpha’s Beta already.” I look around, my eyes catching two shadows following us. One is Dante, the other I don’t know. “You have two Betas each, am I right?” I ask curiously.
Elden nods. “So, you noticed? Yes, we always have two Betas at our side. Everyone comes with different traits and talents, so we see it as an advantage to have two at our side. Our Lunas normally have a Beta and Gamma at their side too.”
The two upper floors are the family residence. They are separated completely and built as individual apartments. The smaller ones are for the younger siblings. The twins still share one. Aurelia has her own, I assume. On the upper floor is Elden and Flora’s place, Liam’s suite and Marius’ suite.
“I sometimes choose to stay in the bungalow next to the packhouse,” Liam explains. “I like my privacy.”
I love it! . It means Liam and I can always choose to go to our own very private space. For future night activities, this might be the best solution. One of the Betas who was following us approaches Elden. “Alpha, it’s about time.”
Elden nods. “We need to go back. Lunch is ready.” Before we leave, he gestures toward the Beta who just approached him. He is quite bulky and looks scary with his shaved head, scar, and tattoos. “This is Beta Vincent. He and Beta Calvin are my seconds in command.”
I smile at him, feeling a bit nervous. These people are all so important. “It’s nice to make your acquaintance.”
He bows slightly towards me and flashes me a bright smile. “Likewise, Miss Annalise.”
When Liam and Aurelia lead the way back downstairs, I try to slow down my pace to remain with Elden. I swallow down my intimidation of him – no matter how nice he is to me and how welcoming, due to his powerful position in our hierarchy, he is one of the highest-ranking Lycans in the world. It's a bit scary. I gather all my courage. “I-I wonder if I could ask you something," I can't help but stutter.
He looks at me thoughtfully. “Of course.”
“Is it usual for Lycans to be mated to normal wolves?” I ask carefully, not sure how to voice what I want to know. “Aren’t you normally fated to other Lycans or high-ranking werewolves?”
He takes my question seriously “You have been worrying about that, I assume?”
“No, worry is the wrong word,” I point out. “But… I guess I’ve just never heard of it before.”
He nods. “It does happen. Lycans have been fated to normal werewolves before, even when the werewolves are not of Alpha blood. Dante, for example, is half Lycan, half-werewolf. In my pack, there are both Lycans and wolves.”
“And how often is a Lycan fated to an Omega?”
He looks at me pointedly. “Never,” he admits. “Liam is the first.”
“That’s what I thought,” I mutter.
“Does it worry you?”
“No, not really. I'm very happy and lucky to be with Liam. But it surprised me. Because… why?” I tilt my head. “Out of all possible she-wolves out there, why me?”
Elden shows me a smile, a real one this time. “I like you, Annalise. You ask questions, try to look behind things and understand them, but you are not scared. I have had wolves I knew for ages bow their heads in fear to me, although I didn't even use my Alpha aura on them. Yet, you are here and holding an actual conversation with me. I commend that. To answer your question: Why not?”
I blink at him.
“The Moon Goddess saw something in you that others didn’t have,” he smiles slightly. “She knew Liam was longing for something only you could give him. I love my son dearly, but I am ashamed to admit that I went pretty hard on him. I think he was never really happy. But look at him now? He has never looked happier and healthier. I have heard him joke and laugh, and that’s new. And in return, he was able to make you step up for a role you would have never been able to take otherwise.”
His last words surprise me. “What do you mean?”
“I mean that you have it in you to be a great leader,” he tells me. “It doesn’t matter that you tested Omega – that doesn’t mean anything. What’s important is that you have a sense of those in need and for what’s right and wrong. It comes intuitively to you without making you give up on yourself by being too selfless. Liam needs someone like you at his side… or rather: he needs exactly you. By fating Liam to you, the Moon Goddess gave you the chance to prove to everyone that rank doesn’t mean anything.”
I let his words sink in. “Thank you,” I say sincerely. “Thank you for being honest.”
“You can come to me anytime with any question, whatever you want to know.” He chuckles. “After all, you are going to be my future daughter-in-law.”
