A few seconds later, she jumps down again and runs through the door.

“Wait, Luna,” Gamma Aurel hurries after her while Edward looks slightly panicked. “Luna Flora, please be careful.”

“He deserves a raise,” I say.

“He gets one every month,” Felix grins.

I chuckle. “Well-deserved, though. He is also the only one who can handle her.” I love my mother; she is the glue sticking the family together. She loves us all unconditionally, approves of our little quirks, and always listens to our problems, no matter how small they might be. She takes us all seriously. And she is there when things might get a little rough with our father.

It doesn’t change the fact that she is a lot of work and impossible to control. She tends to doze off sometimes and be in her own little world, just to wake up from her haze a few seconds later and do something rash.

My father must have thought something similar because he sighs and tilts his head. “I will consider giving him a bonus,” he mutters.

I have a few meetings to attend, driving to my apartment in town to prepare for them. It’s not unusual for us to have different properties. It takes a lot for me to focus on work and the meeting ahead of me while my thoughts mostly linger with my adorable mate.

I know she played me the other day. I knew it the moment she looked at me through her huge honey-coloured eyes and tried to stop me from punishing that dimwit of a Beta. She has that knowing gaze, that dazzling smile, and she knows what to say in every tough situation. If it weren’t for her, things might have gotten a bit dirtier. At least Alpha Cedric’s daughter Celine had the decency to step in – I have to give her that much. As a fellow Alpha, I clearly approve. As for that idiot Beta she-wolf, I am beyond words. A disgrace for any strong Beta family. How could she insult my mate like that?

Chapter 9 A date night out

Duringthenextfewdays, Lauren and her followers leave me alone. I guess they are too scared of Liam’s wrath. My original plan was to face Lauren directly next time and tell her to let me be, but it’s not necessary anymore, and I hope she and her friends will continue to stay away. Frankly, I don’t care much about what they say behind my back anymore.

Ella and Dave were furious when they found out what they were saying about me, and I literally had to stop Ella from creating a scene.

“It was fun seeing you handle Liam,” Finn smirks. He has dyed the ends of his black hair a mint green. Also, he has a new piercing in his left earlobe, something Dave has commented on non-stop.

“Pity I missed it,” Ella mutters. “I would have loved seeing Annie playing her man.”

“I wouldn’t call it playing him,” I point out.

“Completely had him in your palm,” Finn continues mercilessly. “I can’t believe he and Fenris fell for your scheme and didn’t burn down the whole place.”

“It wasn’t that simple, though,” I point out carefully, remembering my discussion with Liam afterwards.

Finn sighs. “I can only imagine.”
