His words make me feel so happy. I didn’t expect him to say anything about it because I don’t think I even did much. I just didn’t want them to capture me too easily. Leah feels even happier than me, though, his praise obviously speaking to her pride as my wolf. “I still think I could have done better.”
“You ran into an inhabited area,” Liam analyzes. “You considered your surroundings. You didn’t let those psychos get the better of you and used your logic and instincts to fight them off. I think you did really well.”
“I would like to train regularly, though,” I point out.
He tilts his head thoughtfully. “I will think of something,” he promises. A smirk curls around his lips. “So meanwhile, feed my sadistic nature, and tell me again, how you kicked that dude in the balls and hit him with a bottle? I want to hear it again. Please don’t leave out any details of his suffering.”
I stay with Liam for the weekend, glad that my college is on break and I don’t need to study. It’s the first time I’m able to spend such a long time with him, and I have to admit… I’m really getting used to having him around me. Eventually, though, I have to go out and meet my friends, or they will raid the place. Liam makes sure that I have a guard with me wherever I go, so that I will always feel safe.
We are meeting at the campus café. The first thing Ella does when she sees me is fling herself at me, wrapping her arms around my neck. “I wish I was there!” she gushes out. “I should have been there to protect you!”
I feel touched by her sudden spout of emotions and protectiveness. I know Ella has never felt a sense of belonging to her pack. She was shunned and grew up alone and lonely. She probably sees Dave and me as her own little pack. “I’m all right, El,” I pat her back softly. “I’m not that helpless.”
“Thank goddess you asked Steve to train you,” she mutters. “Those pathetic kids.”
“For real,” Finn agrees, his tone filled with displeasure and disbelief. “I can’t believe they went that far.”
“Alpha Liam and Beta Dante are convinced they had help,” Anders points out. “They think someone else planted the idea in their minds.”
Dave wraps his arms around both Ella and me and squeezes us. “One can never leave you two alone,” he says, surprisingly serious.
Next to us, Finn clears his throat. “Okay, this is getting too dramatic, don’t you think?”
Ella shoots him a glare, but I nod thankfully at him. “It was just a little scary,” I tell them. “It’s over now. Apparently, it was all a prank.”
“Why? What for?” Finn wants to know, frowning slightly.
I shrug. “I don’t know. Celine called Liam yesterday. Seems like she and Alpha Cedric found out a few details, though; she promised she would tell us once she knows more.”
“And it’s really over?” Dave asks skeptically.
I nod. “I think so.” When Dave doesn’t answer, I nudge him with my elbow. “What do you think?”
“I think that if people go down that rabbit hole, it normally doesn’t end that soon,” he mutters. “Let’s be more careful from now on.”
I nod tentatively. I don’t think I’m in danger anymore, but I really should be more cautious. The boys took those photos and sent them to me. With them being caught, it should be over for now, but Dave is right. It doesn’t do any harm to be more careful.
When we take our seats and order our coffees, Finn looks at me with a lopsided smile. “How overjoyed was Liam when he found out you were attacked?” he asks, his voice dripping with sarcasm.
“Not much,” I blush slightly. “He was furious.”
“Had they not been teenagers, he would have killed them,” Finn says. Dave throws him a surprised glance, but Ella and I can only nod. He didn’t only hold Fenris back because of me. He also did it because they were just teens. Even in our society there are certain laws protecting minors. As Liam’s mate, I’m really proud of him. I know he is a strong Lycan, and his wolf is very powerful, but he has himself under perfect control and would never break their own laws. I found myself a strong mate.
I’m about to answer Finn when I hear the door of the café swing open, and a giggling and laughing group enter. I immediately make out the blond girl amongst them. She sees me, too, her eyes lingering on me for a moment before turning away and continuing to chat with her friends.
“Great,” Ella narrows her eyes. “Just what we needed.”
“The brainless idiot and her following,” Finn groans. “At least they won’t approach me when you guys are here.”
“Always count on Lauren to raise the mood,” Dave rolls his eyes.
“She wasn’t too happy to see us either,” I point out with a frown.
“What do you mean?” Ella wants to know.
“She looked at me for a moment, and I swear there was something in her eyes,” I rub my temples thoughtfully. “Almost like she was shocked that we are here.”
Anders leans back and stirs his tea. “She plays her role perfectly.”
