I called Ella, Annalise's friend, hoping she may be able to find a few clues at their apartment. Maybe someone followed them around? I’m ready to grasp at any straw. I have also informed Celine. She is from Moon Blood and has turned out to be a fantastic ally. We might need a different perspective on things, and knowing how level-headed Celine is, she might be able to help us.
Meanwhile, our warriors are strategically combing through the area around the pack grounds.
I have no idea what else to do though. Never in my life have I felt this out of my depth. I always know what to do and how to achieve something, but this time it’s different. This time it’s my mate’s life on the line, and I feel unusually anxious and nervous. My ability to control my emotions comes in handy though, because it at least stops me from getting lost in my anger. Annalise won't benefit from me going crazy and wasting precious time.
My father, his Betas, Dante, and I are trying to understand the whys and hows right now. “Someone had to be spying on Annie,” Dante muses. “They knew she was visiting you, and they probably took a wild guess that she would be roaming the pack area to get to know everything.”
“Still a very risky plan,” Dad points out. “Liam could have accompanied her.”
“I don’t know,” Dante tilts his head. “In its simplicity, it’s actually not the worst plan.”
Calvin crosses his arms in front of his chest, tilting his head. “You won’t like what I’m going to suggest.”
“Well, that’s nothing new,” I huff. “Out with it.”
“We completely ignored the possibility that they might have had inside information,” Calvin concludes.
Dante and I exchange a glance. “Are you implying that one of our fellow pack members is involved?” I demand, willing down my emotions to stay in control. I love my pack. These are genuinely good people here. But then, of course, you never know… I’m not naïve enough to believe that no one would ever betray me. “Not everyone knows the schedules for our patrols, let alone all these other details.” I point out.
“Liam is right,” my father frowns. “It would need to be a high-ranking pack member or someone in my pack who spied on the warriors for weeks. Such a behavior would have raised suspicions.”
Calvin shrugs.
“Who do you have in mind?” my father asks sharply.
“There are a few,” Calvin states.
A few years ago, I would have been more alarmed by his words, more shocked, but I now know that Calvin doesn’t trust anyone. He always sees the bad in people. It’s who he is. Sometimes his attitude is useful. Sometimes, it’s distracting. At the moment, I’m leaning more towards the latter. If he doesn’t have any real clues or proof, we will just be wasting our time.
“Just spit it out, Calv,” Vincent says, clearly feeling uncomfortable in his skin. He and Calvin are close because they share the Beta position, but they don’t always agree.
Calvin nods and mentions a few names of warriors who are on patrol frequently. He even tells us why he thinks they might be suspicious. It’s mostly little secrets they keep, little things they do that might seem shady to the eye of a person who wants to see the bad in them. It’s things like one of the guys having a human woman as his girlfriend; one guy seems to like to go to the casino. Again, my stomach churns a bit. None of the things he mentioned is in any way close to proof.
The worst part is that Calvin is having fun saying evil things about them. He really gives me an eerie feeling sometimes.
Dante frowns. “I’m a very private man too, Calvin. And I keep a lot of things to myself. In my free time, I go for long walks, all alone. Does that make me suspicious too?”
“Yes and no,” Calvin says shortly. “No, because you are loyal to Alpha Liam.”
“So otherwise, I would have been suspicious?”
“It’s a fact that rogues killed your mate and unborn child,” Calvin states. “The mutts attacked our pack and Alpha couldn’t save her from them. Could be revenge.”
Dante raises to full height, his aura darkening slightly. He is pissed, which is very rare for him. “How dare you,” he spits out.
I’m at his side, stopping him before he can seriously hurt Calvin. “He is right, Calvin,” I grit out. I can feel my aura radiating, waves of anger washing over me; Fenris doesn’t like his closest friend and Beta to be under such an attack. “Dante doesn’t deserve your suspicion!”
My father stares at Calvin. “Did you just piss at my leg, too?” he asks darkly.
“I said you wouldn’t like it,” Calvin says. His tone is more guarded now. He clearly doesn’t want to upset his Alpha too much. “There is someone else, though.”
My father frowns. “I hope you know you are stepping on thin ice.”
“I know,” Calvin says evenly. “But this is my job.”
“So?” my father demands to know now, his face darkening. “Spit it out!”
“Today during breakfast, one of your sons came unusually late, Alpha,” he states. “Isn’t that weird?”
