She is quiet for a while, and I’m scared she will disappear again for a moment.I’m sorry, she says.Sorry Ella, I let you struggle alone. I was just… so tired… and…
I sigh.I get it.
I won’t leave you again, she says.I promise. The pack bond is strong, I can feel it. The bond to our Alpha and Luna is strong. And the bond to our mate. It makes me strong too.
I’ve lived the life of a lone wolf for years. That’s what Liam told me when I reluctantly shared my issues with him. He noted during our training sessions that although I can shift, there was a void in me. He is strict and demands a lot of me because I need to protect his mate; but he also understands me. Now that he knows my problem, he promised me he would make sure to help me reconnect with Nefeli.
He is a great mentor.
I missed you,I say honestly.
Me too. It might be a while before you can use my full powers, Ella. But at least we have that delicious-looking mate in front of us. What a nice chunk of meat.
Wow, that’s what I call a change in mood.
He can heal us,she beams.
I don’t need anyone to heal me.
Yes you do. He needs it too, Ella,Nefeli says.We can heal each other.
“Ella?” Dante asks in worry. “Is something wrong?”
I look up at him, feeling tears burning in my eyes. “I just heard my wolf.”
He looks at me, surprised. “Your wolf?”
“I can feel her most of the time, but she hasn’t talked to me in years,” I explain. “She just talked to me.”
“Ella, that’s fantastic!” His eyes widen, glinting in joy. He scoops me up into his arms in excitement. “I know how it feels when your wolf is quiet. Sylvan didn’t really interact with me for years after our first mate died. I felt so relieved when he returned to me.”
I look at him in surprise. He is almost as excited as I am. Of course, he understands. I’m so stupid. I wrap my arms around him and lean my head against his chest. I can feel him pressing me tighter to his body. He takes a deep breath as if to take in my scent.
“Sorry, I need to shamefully take advantage of this moment,” he says.
I smack across his shoulder blade. I’m tall, though not as towering as Celine and Liam’s sister; but tall enough not to be intimidated by a guy’s height. Dante is taller than me and so manly. I snuggle against him further, breathing in his scent.
My walls are crumbling, and I don’t even mind it anymore.
*ANNALISE*
“You know, I do have my driver’s license,” I point out, slightly annoyed but also amused. Jun and Ella refused to let me drive the car.
“I know, but Alpha Liam will have my head if I let you drive and something happens to you,” Ella scolds me.
During the last weeks, I realized that our relationship has changed quite a bit. It’s not like before, not as easygoing. We are still best friends but I’m also her Luna. I know it’s natural that things are changing, but I might need more time to fully accept this new reality.
Ella has trained like crazy, and it shows. Both she and Jun take their new position and tasks seriously. As Ella’s best friend, I wish we could continue like we were before. As her Luna, however, I’m proud of her.
I think she is probably facing the same inner conflict I am.
“At least he kept his promise to let me go out on my own,” I chuckle.
“Pity he couldn’t come,” Ella says.
“I know, but he is out with Ari and Dante, gathering the pack members who were made rogues or banished. He still hasn’t found everyone. Jace is helping him, thankfully.”
Ella smiles proudly. Through the bond as their Luna, I can feel how proud they all are of their Alpha.
