During the next hour, the others basically throw dresses at me. Dave and Celine have more serious choices, daring ones by Ella… and I don’t know what to call the stuff Finn is showing me. “I’m not wearing that,” I exclaim. “It shows my whole belly.”
“What are you?” Finn grumbles. “A nun?!”
“You really think this is something I should wear when I meet your family?” I frown. “You wouldn’t mind me telling Liam you chose that dress?”
Finn blinks, exchanging a glance with Anders. “Well,” he puts the dress aside. “On second thought…” He turns to Ella for a moment. “It would look good on you too.”
Ella gives him a deathly glare. “Dare to offer it to me, and I swear I will grab my pen and push it up your nose and right through your brain.”
Finn grimaces. “Ugh, El, at least make your threats less gross. I’m just saying you could pull off such a dress too.”
Ella rolls her eyes. “I’m not girly enough.”
“Says who?” Finn asks, surprised.
“Yes, please, Finny,” Dave nods. “Tell her. I spend 24 hours a day telling my two ladies how hot they are.” He wiggles his brows at Celine. “You are hot too, but you certainly know it. Not that I mind. Show your worth, baby.”
Celine smirks, amused. “You are truly one of a kind.”
While Finn and Ella continue to bicker, I decide to focus on Dave and Celine for now. Both have a good eye for what suits other people. Celine has chosen a very light violet dress. It’s a flowy fabric, satin I assume. It’s simple, without too many pearls or other stuff I don’t like. It looks and feels fantastic. It’s off-the-shoulder and shows some cleavage, but not too much.
Celine helps me zip it up.
When I look in the mirror, I notice a slight change. I did tone up a bit, but not much. I’m not magically turning into a different person, and I am still a bit on the curvier side, but I never thought working out would boost my confidence that much.
Celine looks at me, nodding in approval. “You look really good, Annie.”
“I’m definitely getting this,” I mutter.
“Yes, it’s perfect for a lot of banquets,” Ella approves.
“Looks really good on you,” Finn agrees.
“Try this one too,” Celine hands me another dress. It’s a bit shorter and in a very radiant red. Not the cheap kind of red, though. More wine colored. It’s also a bit more daring than what I normally would wear. I retreat into the changing room again, slipping into it. It’s knee length, tight in the middle and then turns into a slight petticoat. It’s off-the-shoulder again, but this time is revealing more of my neck and shoulders.
Once I dare to look in the mirror, I’m actually surprised. My neck and my shoulders have really benefited from the training. I will never be as muscular and athletic as my sister or Celine, but my shoulders are slender and firmer now, and my neck looks longer. The dress accentuates it even more. Also, the dress hides my wide hips a bit. I always feel a bit self-conscious about them.
I carefully step outside to the others. “So, what do you say?”
Finn looks at me for a moment, eyes wide. He flushes slightly and turns his gaze away. “Not bad.”
“Lord Liam will love it,” Anders says. “And hate it.”
“Yeah, that’s why it’s perfect,” Ella grins. “You definitely need more off-the-shoulder stuff in your wardrobe. That shit suits you.”
“Celine,” Dave says breathlessly. “I commend your sense of styling. Annie looks fantastic. If your man doesn’t eat you up after seeing you like this, I don’t know what else to do. Right Emerson?”
Emerson has been watching from the sidelines. Addressed directly now, he raises his brows. “She could wear a potato sack, and he would still devour her on the spot. I’m driving them around most of the time. Trust me.”
I flush a bit. “Em!”
He chuckles softly. “I apologize, Miss Annalise.”
Dave steps behind me, carefully collecting my hair and pulling it up a bit. “Shoulder length bob, Annie. Get rid of that long hair of yours. You always hide behind it. You need to freaking show your collarbone and shoulders.”
“I agree,” Ella says.
Since I was twelve, I have had my hair in the same style and length. It’s like my comfort blanket. It’s not particularly long, but a shoulder-length bob would mean cutting quite a bit of it. I’m so used to sticking to my routine, scared of making even little changes. I sigh. “All right,” I agree. “I will do it.”
