“They will be, eventually,” Geneva points out.

“Yes, your other children have great gifts and promising talents,” Bernard agrees. “You might pass the pack onto one of them in a few years. And then?”

“There are more Crown Princes than me,” Dad tells them. “We are five families. And each of them has someone ready for the throne.”

“None of them is as good as you are,” Samuel intervenes, sounding annoyed. They probably had that discussion more than once already. “And you know it.”

Did your father just get scolded?Annalise links me.

I have to hide my grin.Yes, and I love it!

Oh, you!She chuckles.

“Let’s talk about this another time,” Geneva interrupts them. “Liam and Annie have more to tell us right now.”

I nod before telling them about how Annalise is immune to any Alpha command. “Also, silver doesn’t harm her.”

“And wolfsbane,” Annalise adds. “It seems my body can build up a resistance to anything that hurts me once.”

Dad looks at the three of them. “Why did she rank Omega?”

Bernard looks at Geneva. “So that’s what you meant,” he mutters.

Geneva ignores him and instead approaches Annalise. My father brings her an additional chair to sit down right next to her. She takes Annalise’s hands into hers. “May I?”

“Of course,” Annalise nods, bending forward a bit so that Geneva can take her face between her hands. Geneva rests her forehead against Annalise’s and closes her eyes. I hold my breath, wondering what Geneva will find. She’s one of the people who made sure the test works properly, for her gift is to find any gifts within others.

The rest of us remain silent, allowing Geneva to work with full concentration. After what feels like hours, she pulls away. She squeezes Annalise’s hand and smiles before turning towards us again. “This one is a bit more complicated,” she tells us.

Samuel stares at her. “What do you mean by that? Did the test not work on her? We might need to readjust it if it failed.”

“We need to readjust the test, but not for the reasons you think,” Geneva tells him. “You might not know this, or maybe you know but are not fully aware of it, but most of the gifts we have come from our wolf sides or from the connection we as humans have to our wolf spirits. However you look at it, it’s always connected with the wolves.”

We all nod thoughtfully.

“In Annie’s case here, her wolf is clearly an Omega wolf. The test did not fail the wolf.” She pauses. “The test failed the human.”

“What!?” Samuel exclaims. “So, the goddess gifted the human instead of the wolf spirit?”

“Has this ever happened before?” Bernard asks.

“Not that we know of,” Samuel mutters.

“Just because we don’t know about it doesn’t mean it has never happened,” Geneva tells him. “We only started the test around 100 years ago. We don’t know what happened before that. And even if it never happened, it doesn’t mean it can’t happen now.”

She looks at Annalise now. “Annie, your wolf is an Omega wolf. However, you as a person are not an Omega. You have gifts. So, in a way, you are an Omega with gifts.”

“Fenris hinted at this too one time. I think he did so subconsciously,” I hear myself say.

Annalise turns to me, looking at me curiously. “When?”

“Remember when you came to save me? You wanted to shift into Leah- “

“And Fenris said I shouldn’t because Leah would submit to him,” she finishes, her eyes widening. “You’re right.” She looks at Geneva now. “But why? Why would the goddess not bless my wolf instead?”

Geneva sighs. “I can’t talk to the Moon Goddess to say this for certain, but I think she had a plan for you all along, she wanted you to end up with Liam. But… she made sure your gifts wouldn’t be detected early on. She made sure your gifts would grow together with you as a person, and get stronger the stronger as you did. If gifts are connected to our human side, it means they are strongly connected to our ability to learn and polish them. The more confident you grew, the stronger your gifts were. The goddess probably knew your family was loving and wouldn’t subject you to any abuse because of your rank. It helped you build up your confidence. It also made other Omegas who you encountered realize that being an Omega is not a curse; and that rank doesn’t mean a thing.”

“So I could grow up in peace,” Annalise mutters thoughtfully.
