“She just got lucky last time because she weaseled her way out of everything despite Celine having proof, but I mean… trying such shit again?” Finn blinks. “Is she really that stupid!?”
“She is a sociopath,” I frown.
“Liam is right,” Dante points out. “You never know what they are up to.”
My father nods. “All right, let’s ask Aryanna first. She might have seen or heard something during the attack. Then let's call Alpha Cedric of Moon Blood to see about Lauren's whereabouts.”
Ari has woken up a bit ago. She had inhaled so much wolfsbane, it took her a while to regain consciousness. She is still weak and wounded, but wants to help. She is as pissed as all of us that someone invaded the pack grounds, and she seems to take it personally that her future Luna was abducted on her watch. It's not her fault, though. If it's anyone's fault, it's mine for not being careful enough. Our obvious lack of security is not on her!
Ari fills us in on exactly what happened. She didn’t hear anything about Lauren, though, or anyone else who might be involved.
“Aryanna told her to run when she got hurt,” my father muses after we leave Aryanna’s room and rejoin the others. “That was a smart move. She gave her the chance to run, and Annalise took it. She cried for help. Another smart move. Who knows when we would have found out she was missing otherwise?”
“She also said the men indeed didn’t know who or rather, what she is. So, it’s true that the guys were complete outsiders,” Dante adds. “She said when she wounded one of the guys' legs, he was surprised, like he hadn’t anticipated her strength.”
“They didn’t even know they were in werewolf territory?” Finn asks in shock.
My father sighs. “I don’t know if we were lucky in that case or not. They might not have agreed to take the job.”
“Or they would've demanded heavier caliber weapons to kill everyone on sight,” Dante adds.
“Exactly,” Dad mutters. “That’s what I meant.”
“But why Annalise?” I want to know. “Did they want to get back at me? Or the pack? Or-”
Li…am…
“Annalise?” I halt in my steps. I believe I just imagined it for a split second that I’m hallucinating. But then I hear it again.
Liam!?
I can’t believe it!Annalise, love, is that you!?
“She can mind link you?” dad asks in surprise. “They used wolfsbane on her, didn’t they? Aryanna can hardly move, and she already got the antidote!”
My heart makes a careful jump. If that’s true, they might not have complete power over her.Dear, are you hurt?
Not much… but they are planning to do something. Not sure what.
Hang in there. We are going to get you back.I hurry to reassure her. I need to cover the facts fast, though, as long as she is still with me and can open the mind link.Did they use wolfsbane on you?
Yes, but I can feel Leah, and I can mind link you.
Love, it’s not working. You must be immune to it.I can’t freaking believe it. Wolfsbane has little effect on her which means she can use the mind link, heal, and have her wolf with her!We can use that to our advantage!
There is a pause. You are right. It worked at first when they kidnapped me, but not anymore. Her voice sounds exhausted, but she is still there with me. She is so strong.Leah is weak, though. The drugs. Tell me what to do.
My father and Vincent are at my side immediately.
“Instruct her to tell you what she sees,” Vincent tells me. “If wolfsbane doesn’t affect her, then she still has her wolf senses. Weakened or not, doesn’t matter. I’m sure she can feel her surroundings.”
“Be sensitive,” my father urges. “She is tired and scared. Guide her through it. Ask questions.” He puts a hand on my shoulder. “Trust your instincts, son.”
I’m not going to disappoint her. Everything for her. Whatever it takes.Where are you?Can you tell me anything about where they are keeping you?
A basement, she says. It’s under the earth. There is no light, no window. It smells earthy… so…
Good,I encourage her softly. You are doing so well, love. Okay, close your eyes, don’t rely on them for now. What do you hear and feel and smell? Your senses are still working. Leah is still with you.
