“Yes, me too,” Ella adds quietly.
Later that day, my sister Harmony drops by to help me settle in. She brought some stuff to decorate my room, including a few pictures of our family. I could have done it by myself, but I like hanging out with my sister. Besides, she wanted to help. I watch her shuffling around in the room. She is slender but athletic, with the perfect proportions. Mom told me that she has recently joined the training for the elite pack warriors and is doing quite well. Unlike me, she is a true Beta she-wolf, and it shows in her strength and the way she carries herself. Her hair is light brown, almost blonde, that sparkles whenever the sun hits it. She has tied it back into a loose ponytail, and even in the simple jeans and shirt she is wearing, she looks amazing! There is no denying that I wish I had some of her prettiness, but at the same time, I am proud to have such a beautiful, strong yet gentle sister.
Suddenly, I hear a noise coming from the garden. I frown, leaning out of my window to take a closer look at the commotion. Oh goddess, why am I not surprised? The squealing comes from a bunch of girls who flock around Finn. I roll my eyes slightly. Like, can’t they catch a clue? He doesn’t even seem to like it, flashing them annoyed glances and glares. He could have used his Alpha status to scare them away. I know most others would. But interestingly enough, he doesn’t.
“Don’t tell me; you have your eyes set on that pretty rebel,” Harmony teases me while going through my wardrobe. She frowns. “Do you have any colorful pieces at all?”
“Goddess, no,” My eyes widen in horror. “I am not interested in pretty boys.” I pause. “And nope, I like black.”
“Why’s that?”
“I think black fits me the best. It’s-”
“That’s not what I meant,” Harmony rolls her eyes. “Why are you not interested in pretty boys?”
“Harmy.” I roll my eyes. “Look at me.”
She stares at me. “I am. And?”
“Don’t you think I am a bit too plain for a guy like Finn?” She frowns instantly, ready to argue with me, but I beat her to it. “You know what, don’t bother because even if I felt more confident, he still wouldn’t be my type.”
“And here I thought you would finally be interested in getting laid,” she teases.
I flush. “Excuse me. I am still waiting for the right guy, preferably my mate!”
She smiles. “That’s fine, Annie, but you could still go on a few dates, have some fun.” She pauses, eyeing me intently. “And just for the record, youarebeautiful.”
She means it because despite being smart and beautiful, she is also the kindest person I have ever met. Growing up as the mediocre middle child, I would have probably resented and envied her if she wasn’t such a wonderful sister and person. I do envy her sometimes, but I just love her unconditionally. It’s the reason I chose to ignore her last words and decide not to argue. “I just found it interesting that Finn wouldn’t yell at them to leave him alone. If you ask me, he looks scary enough, and he is of Lycan blood.”
“I’ve heard that Lord Elden’s children are quite well-mannered. I am taking a wild guess here, but I think his father wouldn’t be overjoyed if he heard that his son created a ruckus here and behaved like a wild animal,” she muses. “I heard he is pretty strict. Guess Finn wouldn’t want to upset him during his first week in college.”
“You were not kidding,” Harmony mutters later while I accompany her to her car. We pass a group of she-wolves circled around Finn. Harmony furrows her brows while scanning the crowd. “Is that Lauren?” she asks with a frown.
I nod. “She is his number one fangirl, it seems.” Lauren is a girl from my pack. She was born into a powerful Beta family, and she is very close to Alpha Cedric and his only child, Celine. Her father is Alpha Cedric's Beta.
Celine is with her, but not with the crowd. She is standing further away, leaning against the wall of a building. She ignores what’s going on in front of her. Instead, she is flipping through her phone, shaking her beautiful blonde hair while she does so. She has tied her hair back to a tight and long ponytail, wearing a high-waisted jeans skirt and a white blouse. Jeez, she is beautiful and elegant. Honestly, even Ella and I had a little girl crush on her once. Nothing about her looks tacky or cheap. She truly looks like an Alpha’s daughter.
She and Lauren grew up together, because of the closeness of their families. I don’t know Celine much. She is always in her own little circle of people. Besides, she is a high-ranking Alpha. Despite my father’s position, there is no way I would have been able to cross Celine’s path. But I did have my fair share of unpleasant encounters with Lauren. She treated Dave like he had some sort of contagious disease, and she looked down on Ella as well. Funnily enough, there was a short moment in middle school when Lauren wanted me to join their clique. I don’t know why. Maybe I was supposed to be their social project. The Goddess alone knows their reasons for approaching me. I refused. I didn’t want to hang out with them. I rather enjoyed staying with my friends, even if they were considered uncool.
I dread the moment Celine is going to choose a Beta out of our pack as her assistant. It will be Lauren for sure.
“Embarrassing,” Harmony mutters.
I had completely forgotten her presence for a moment. I turn to face her. “Huh?”
Harmony doesn’t specify, but she has her sight set on Lauren, her lips tight, eyes darkened. For a moment, she radiates her true power. “She is supposed to protect Celine, not fawn over a guy who obviously doesn’t want her,” she hisses. “It’s one of her most important tasks. She should act according to her high rank and fulfill her duties!” Harmony turns to look at me. “Keep an eye on the situation, will you?”
I nod tentatively. “Not sure if I can do something about it, though,” I say carefully.
Harmony smiles warmly. “You don’t need to. Just give me a call if something happens.”
“Sure, Harmy,” I smile.
She gives me a swift hug. “Watch out for your safety, don’t drink too much, and definitely don’t party too much. Well, party a little bit. And don’t let any random guy pick you up. Oh, and if you go out, take Ella with you. It’s safer if you are not alone. And-”
I laugh. “Please, get going now, Harmony.” I shove her towards her car. “You are worse than Dad!”
