Story: Scarred Assassin
I was about to translate when a mischievous idea came to my mind. “But he apologized, Kendal, don’t be so mad at him.” Kendal and Jayden widened their eyes for two different reasons. Ariana laughed while I pressed my lips in a thin line to hide my laughter.
“You’re still mad?” Kendal shook his head at Jayden with a frustrated frown on his face.
‘Don’t do that, tell him what I said.’
I gasped in fake shock. “You think he’s shit? Get to know him first, Kendal.” Kendal hit my hand and I laughed. “Fine, fine, he thinks you’re nice and he’ll think about liking you.” I translated correctly and Jayden glared at me.
‘You’re laughing a lot, is it because of him?’ Kendal asked and my smile fell. Was I really laughing a lot? I looked at Jayden and I could tell he was waiting for me to translate again.‘Don’tworry,I like that you are, and I like him already.’ I smiled and nodded at him.
“What did he say? Should I learn sign language?” Just when I thought my heart couldn’t swell with love, Jayden asked. Would he really learn sign language for Kendal?
“He rephrased his words, he said he likes you.”
“I knew it, my charm works on everyone.”
“Can we leave?” Ariana said, glancing at Daniel’s dead body on the floor and I realized he was there all along.
“Yes, let’s leave. I’m sorry for all this. It’s just a game, he’ll wake up when we leave.”
“As if,” Ariana said, rolling her eyes. “I know he’s dead, dead like never waking up. He’s a bad guy, bad guys should die.” She said and I scoffed.
One more bad guy left though, the angriest of them all.
Jayden held Ariana and I held Kendal. We got out of the warehouse and after Jayden and Ariana got into Jayden’s car, I remembered something and stopped Kendal from entering the car. “Can we go there?” I asked, pointing to a small distance at the front. He nodded and I told Ariana and Jayden to stay in the car.
I kneeled in front of Kendal once we got to a safe distance. “Tell me, Kendal. Tell me how and when you knew, cuz I know you do.”
He sighed and I nervously waited for him. ‘The other day in your room when I came to talk to you about going to a school,’ I nodded. That was about a month before I got them into a school. Nothing extraordinary happened that day in my room, what was he talking about? ‘Before you came in, I saw a note under your bed. It had ‘I am Alex’ on it, that was the same note on my dad’s dead body. I checked your drawer and saw a lot of it, and I just put two and two together. I’ve only been guessing, but I confirmed today.’
I covered my mouth as he signed to me and I realized how much he knew. Not only did he know I killed his dad, but he also knew I was the Alex being talked about every time in the news. But… “Then why aren’t you scared of me?” I asked as my heart broke, praying to not hear the answer I knew I deserved.
‘Becauseyou don’t scare me. Sometimes when I remember, I try to scare myself with your name, but I realized that I’m not scared. Maybe because of how you’ve portrayed yourself to me, but you’ve never scared me and I know you never will.’ Tears spilled from my eyes as I pulled him in a hug.
“I’m sorry, Ken. I didn’t know… I didn’t know he had children before I… your dad hurt me, Kendal, he hurt me so much and… I’m so sorry.”
He freed himself from me. ‘I don’t hold anything against you. I don’t know what my dad did, but I will later on in the future. Right now you are the only one I remember clearly. Ari and I really love you and we know you love us too.’
“I do, I really do.” He nodded and cleaned my tears, as I held his hand to my cheek.
When I calmed, I held his hand as we walked back to the car. Jayden was to drive us in the car he came with, while Trance was already in another car and he would probably follow us from behind. If I entered Jayden’s car, my car would remain here, and I’d have to return to pick it up.
“Come in, Flower.” I nodded and entered the car. Jayden’s phone rang and he picked it up. “Yeah, she’s here,” he said and handed the phone to me. “It’s Mr Yusuf.”
I placed the phone on my ear and heard Yusuf’s voice. “Hey Alex.”
“Yes?”
“Can you come to the workshop basement real quick?” He said. I noticed his voice shook a little and I narrowed my eyes. Was something happening in the basement?
“Yeah, Trance and I were coming, Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, but come alone, just something I… I need to show you only.”
“Okay Yusuf, I’ll be right there. I know something is up, but at least tell me if it’s Green, Orange or Red?” I asked. It was a known slang for assassins to ask how bad situations were and I just knew something was happening.
He could lie and say everything was okay, but with that question, he was sure to answer.
“The second one, Alex.”
