The warriors shook, even as one of them forced himself to remain calm and responded.
"Alpha, she told us to leave her alone, and as the Luna, we could not refuse her orders. But we hid away and heard her saying to the moon goddess to take her pup to give her back her powers."
Fear sprang through him just at the sight of Alpha Denzel. His gaze was so piercing that the warrior wanted to disappear.
He knew he was going to be punished, but in a case like this, he felt like his life did not matter anymore as long as Alpha Denzel was able to find the right solution to this problem.
The excited mood of the pack members ceased instantly, and Alpha Denzel was lost for words. He knew how stubborn Valerie could be, and not even he could control or make her do anything she did not want.
No one initiated cleaning the pack or cremating the few corpses on the floor.
Valerie made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of the pack, meaning they were going to lose their pup, or had they already lost him?
No one had the answer, but bleeding was a sure sign of a miscarriage.
Alpha Denzel lifted Luna Valerie in his arms and began to hasten to the pack hospital, hoping that it wasn’t too late. His greatest fear was the sight of his pup dead in his arms when birthed.
A part of him told him that their pup might survive, but his wolf kept cursing him for allowing this to happen.
Denzel had blocked him out, but his harsh words still lingered in his mind. ’You made it easy for your enemies to have an edge over you.’
How did he make it easy when all he was doing was defending and saving his pack and its members?
"Alpha, are you taking her to the hospital? What if we try some herbs?" Raven asked, pulling him out of the confusion in his mind.
Alpha Denzel stopped in his tracks and stared at the pale, heavily pregnant woman in his arms. How could she feel so peaceful after what she had done?
Alpha Denzel had never felt so afraid and helpless in his life before, and he could not be upset with Valerie for taking such a decision.
For someone who took a vow to protect the pack with her life, it was the right thing to do, but the pup was equally a member of the pack, and they all had to be protected.
"Val, you should not have done this," Alpha Denzel said softly, about to answer Raven’s question when Valerie responded weakly, her soft gaze meeting his, as she felt the life of her pup draining out of her.
The moon goddess granted her wish, so it was time to do her part as well by letting go of their pup.
Her greatest joy was the fact that Alessia was also an heir. Her son could still become the Alpha. Thus, Valerie was not selfish.
"A wicked leader would not mind seeing his subjects die and ruling over the ashes, but a good leader would give his or her life to the subjects before ruling over them. Which are we?" She asked before closing her eyes to allow sleep to steal her once more.
Alpha Denzel got the message clearly, knowing that they had lost it all. However, their pack and its members were safe, so Alessia’s son, Grant, would train to be the Alpha of the Evergreen pack.
"Raven, I appreciate all your help, but there is nothing anyone can do."
Raven could not accept it. She must have lost the means to help Alice, but there was no more pressure, so why would she watch her Luna suffer if she had not tried all other means?
For the first time, she was so upset with her Alpha, and her words were not soft. "If you are certain there is nothing anyone could do, then you won’t go to the hospital, will you?"
Her question took Denzel by surprise, and even with the hardness of her voice, he could not bring himself to be upset with her.
The fact was, they both cared about the same things, but Alpha Denzel accepted his loss. "I don’t want to have hope."
The pack members were terrified to see their Alpha like this. The loss must have been too great on him to make him give up like this, but Raven was not ready to let them extract the pup from her Luna’s womb without giving it her best shot.
"Your hope keeps all of us alive, Alpha Denzel. You can’t give up on the heir of the pack."
Indeed, Alpha Denzel did not want to lose his pup, and anytime Raven gave him hope, he was never disappointed.
If she said it wasn’t possible, then it would not be, but anytime she tried something, it worked. "Okay, follow me."
Alice remembered the dream she had, feeling there was something she could also do about the situation.
"Alpha, can I come too? I don’t know, but since she saved me with her powers, I could plead with the moon goddess."
Alpha Denzel stiffened at the mention of the moon goddess. Any time she was summoned, seducing spirits would follow, except she made the appearance herself.
"There are consequences, Alice. I don’t want you to go through all that," he said seriously. He always got what he wanted, but it was never easy.
Alice did not care for what price she had to pay but knew she had to do it no matter what. "She saved my life and that of the pack. It’s the least I can do."
Alpha Denzel wanted to refuse, but the warriors already added their voice. "Yes Alpha, she saved our lives. We should all intercede on her behalf."
Alpha Denzel was moved when all the pack members went on their knees. Burke went to get a chair for him, and he sat on it with Valerie on his lap, his hand resting safely on her bump.
She was still bleeding, but he decided to have hope once more, to make yet another bargain for the life of his pup.
"Ray, please get some moon grass and the vitamins grace. Add a little bit of weeping love grass to it," Raven said, but her twin brother froze.
"Weeping love grass? Are you sure about this?"
