The night before.
As Alpha Denzel was leaving the pack, he said to Valerie, "I will check around the pack. You can prepare something warm for us to eat."
"Of course," Valerie agreed, but she was full of suspicions about his movements.
As soon as Denzel turned around, she whispered to Alice, "Can you start dinner? I will come and help you later."
"Okay," Alice agreed joyfully, not suspecting anything.
Valerie followed Denzel from a distance, using silent steps so he wouldn’t notice. She froze when she saw Denzel with a woman. The woman’s head was covered with a black hood, but when Denzel got closer, she removed it.
"Ashley?" Valerie murmured with tears in her eyes as she saw Denzel giving something to her. Her heart sank, and she turned around and walked away.
So all along, Ashley was the investigator Denzel constantly spoke to on the phone. How foolish she had been to trust him so much.
’He’s cheating on us,’ she said to her wolf, Astrid. ’With my sister. Ashley betrayed me, just like Scarlet.’ She could not understand why her sisters liked all the men the moon goddess blessed her with.
If Ashley liked Denzel, then why was she pretending so much at the club only to make Valerie suffer for it?
’I don’t know about that, but I don’t sense it,’ Astrid replied. Her first wolf did not also sense it when Tristan was cheating on her so what could she do?
’Then what could he be doing with her?’ Valerie asked, wondering why her wolf was not on par with her.
’Why not ask him?’ Astrid suggested. Valerie feared that Denzel might humiliate her in front of the pack like Tristan did.
’No. He might just kill me for fear that I might expose him. Tomorrow night, we leave secretly,’ she concluded, but Astrid did not agree or disagree with her.
The next day, Valerie pretended to be nice throughout training, after crying through the night. When it was over, she was not surprised when Denzel left again.
Due to her escape plan, she did not even question him about it. Thinking it through, she realized she could not escape during the day and waited until night. Just as she was dressed with her duffle bag and about to leave, Denzel appeared in front of the door.
"Where are you going?"
His gaze was dark, and Valerie feared, but when she saw the person behind him, her anger boiled, and she walked past him, releasing a harsh slap.
Ashley’s face turned to the side, and her cheeks reddened from the impact. "Val, what is wrong with you?" Ashley asked with pain in her eyes.
This was not the welcome she expected, but Valerie was far from regret.
"Stop pretending. You won. I’m leaving."
Ashley was even more confused. "What are you talking about? I’m only here because of you."
Valerie scoffed. This was the same way she was deceived by Scarlet, but not anymore. She lifted her hand, about to slap Ashley again when Denzel held it in midair.
His gaze was as cold as his voice. "What is wrong with you?"
Valerie yanked her hand away from him, even more annoyed that he tried to stop her from hitting Ashley.
"You are stopping me from slapping your mistress? You don’t have to sneak out to see her anymore. I’m leaving."
With Alpha Denzel’s smart brain, he easily understood what was going on. No wonder she was crying last night. "How long have you known?"
Valerie glared angrily at her sister as she replied to Denzel’s question. "I’ve been suspicious, so I followed you last night."
A bitter smile curved the corner of Denzel’s lips. "Well, you ruined the surprise, but I’m not cheating on you. Never had, never will."
He was just upset that she tried to run away without confronting him, but Valerie was beyond being calm and raged. "What makes you think I’ll believe you?"
She made another attempt to hit Ashley but ended up slapping Denzel instead. From his darkened look, she quickly apologized. "I did not mean to hit you?"
Denzel was particularly intimidating at the moment, not because she was suspicious, but because of the duffle bag on the floor.
Assuming it was some other woman, was this how she was going to run away from him?
"Why not? I should be the one taking your wrath. I orchestrated everything." Denzel’s voice was laced with anger, but Valerie was still not remorseful.
"When did you start cheating on me?"
"I never cheated on you. When the investigator tracked down your father, Ashley was already taking care of him," he explained. Valerie wanted to believe him because of how much she loved him and asked.
"Why did you save her number as the investigator if you were clean?"
"Because I didn’t want you to ruin the surprise. When I met her, she did not have a phone, so I took that of the investigator and gave it to her with his number."
Shame was ganging up on Valerie, and she was afraid of having misjudged him. "I would only believe you if you prove that you found my father."
Denzel smiled, but it did not reach his eyes. This was not the mood he wanted to create with the surprise he planned for her.
"And how are you going to pay for all the mistrust?" He asked seriously, his gaze not leaving hers.
Valerie swallowed tightly and remembered that Ashley had visited the Yellow Stone Pack and informed Scarlet that their father was still alive.
"I will make it up to you if you can prove it."
"If I prove it to you, I will punish you so hard, Val, you would never forget it," Denzel said with a darkened gaze that even Ashley feared.
Valerie was determined to take her punishment but also stood her ground. "And if you lied, you would allow me to leave in peace."
Ashley shook her head, not having the slightest idea of whatever punishment Denzel had for her sister but also too afraid to voice her opinion.
"Deal," Denzel said to Valerie before ordering a maid. "Take her things upstairs."
He removed a blindfold and began to cover her eyes with it. "Though you ruined everything, I hope that this still works."
After covering Valerie’s eyes with the blindfold, he led her out of the entrance of the pack house to where he parked the car, before removing the blindfold.
"Dad," Denzel called out, but as soon as Valerie saw her father, she fainted.
