"Alpha, we have both good and bad news," the investigator informed him.
Alpha Denzel was not liking this. All he wanted was a surprise to make Valerie happy. What could the bad news be?
Somehow, he did not want to hear it first. "I want to hear the good news first."
The investigator excitedly revealed, "We found the old Alpha and his first daughter."
A relief sigh escaped Alpha Denzel. This was the news he was looking forward to and could not understand how there could be something bad attached to it.
"Then what is the bad news?"
"He has still not fully recovered, so Ashley has refused to leave his side," the investigator reported. Alpha Denzel could still not see it as bad news.
He thought it would be something he would not be able to handle, but this did not seem like it.
"How long would the recovery take? Which hospital are they?"
Alpha Denzel was willing to take the risk, especially when Valerie was busy with Alice. He could go and return without her knowing so as not to ruin the surprise, but the next revelation was unexpected.
"Alpha, they are being taken care of by the rogues."
"What?" Alpha Denzel exclaimed, his voice raised, as he regained himself and looked around to ensure that Valerie had not heard anything he said.
It began to dawn on him everything about Ashley’s visit to the Yellowstone pack. Since her father was in a bad condition, she must have joined the rogues to use their help to find him.
"That is the biggest problem. The rogues are upset because a lot of them died in our pack. They won’t let them leave after the treatment without a huge compensation," the investigator revealed. Alpha Denzel thought carefully.
"I want to meet them."
This was not something he would have done in the normal sense since the rogues were unruly. However, this was a matter involving his father and sister-in-law.
The investigator sighed with relief upon hearing that the Alpha would be present. Dealing with rogues was the most difficult thing he ever did in his life.
"I will make the arrangement."
"I want it to be now," Alpha Denzel said sternly. The investigator felt pressured.
"Please give me a few minutes."
Alpha Denzel waited in the living room, thinking about the pros and cons until his phone rang again.
"Alpha, they are giving some weird conditions. I think it would be best if you can make it now."
Not bothering to ask as he already suspected it was not going to be easy, Alpha Denzel stood up from where he sat. "Alright. I will set off in a few minutes."
Only then did he realize that Burke had been standing there, looking lost. "How long have you been here?"
Burke had a confused expression on his face. "Alpha, ever since we returned from the hospital."
"So, you must have heard a few things. Now, the Luna must not know about it. Since you are now the beta, you also have to know this. Our Luna is a female Alpha."
"No." Burke refused, thinking of the consequences. "Alpha, isn’t that a big problem? What if she tries to take over the pack from you? A female Alpha would never submit to her Alpha."
Alpha Denzel forced a smile. That was what they always said, but as for him, he was determined to create his own destiny, different from what people were used to.
"Leave that to me. Female Alpha or not, there is only one Alpha in this pack, and that is me. Luna Valerie would remain the Luna of this pack, but in my absence, she would exercise her Alpha authority.
Burke was happy with this. "Well noted Alpha, but can I ask a question?"
Alpha Denzel spoke roughly, eager to leave. "Only if you can make it snappy. I have to go visit the rogues."
"Rogues?" Burke felt as if he was being fed with so much food, too much to digest. Being a beta allowed him information he would not have known as a warrior or delta.
The more he knew, the more he realized how complicated Alpha Denzel’s life was. Clearing his throat nervously, he asked.
"What happened to her Luna wolf?"
"She died when I rejected her. Our Luna has lived without her wolf ever since being in this pack. It was just yesterday that the moon goddess blessed her with a stronger one."
The revelation felt too heavy for Burke; he was left speechless but slowly began to remember how Alpha Denzel took over wolf training, allowing Luna Valerie to only train in human form with the other trainees.
However, there was also this subtle joy in him for being privy to the Alpha’s deepest secrets.
"Thank you for telling me, Alpha."
Alpha Denzel nodded his head and added.
"Now you must not tell her this. Her father is alive but with the rogues. I have to find a way to get him and her sister out of there. His health is not good because of the attack on his life."
Burke was now stunned. "The Luna would be very happy to hear this."
"I know, but I plan to use it as a surprise before her coronation. It wouldn’t be right for her father and elder sister to miss it, would it?"
Burke smiled. "No, it wouldn’t."
"I don’t know for how long it would take, but I’m telling her I have to take care of a matter outside the pack and would be back soon. Should she get suspicious, you have to calm her. Also, give her every support she’ll need in my absence."
"Well noted, Alpha. I will not fail you," Burke wholeheartedly said. Alpha Denzel was satisfied with the response and patted him on the shoulder.
"Stop standing around like a statue. This is our home now. Make yourself comfortable."
An embarrassed smile curled Burke’s lips, but he knew it was true. It was a surprise for him to be a member of the pack house, but that was what it was.
Alpha Denzel went upstairs and was amazed by what Valerie and Alice were doing. The sound of the door caused Valerie to turn around, and seeing him, she looked upset.
"Denzel, you should not have come."
