The packs had been peaceful ever since the underground rogue attack, so Valerie was not expecting any negative news.
"Val, Ashley gave birth in the shower," her mother said excitedly. Ashley’s labor and delivery were among the fastest anyone ever witnessed, and her mother continued to speak with the same height of excitement.
"Val, I wish you were strong enough to come to this pack. Ashley has a son, Cairo. Your father already spoke with Denzel, and he refused to allow you to travel," Luna Alma said with remorse.
She was there and was capable of taking care of her pregnant daughter, but as far as Denzel was concerned, pregnant women were fragile, and he was not going to endanger Valerie through any means.
The pack was the safest and should be left so.
"I’m so happy to hear that, Mom. Can you let Ashley send me pictures or videos?" She wanted to ask Ashley about the labor but feared getting the same answers as she did with Adira.
"I will do that later because she’s sleeping now, so please allow her a few days."
"No problem, Mom," Valerie said with joy. She could not travel now, but as soon as the baby was born, she was sure to travel as much as she wanted to visit all these wonderful babies.
"How about you?" Her mother asked worriedly, but her response put the elderly woman at peace.
"Very energetic. It’s my second trimester, so everything is just as it should be," Valerie responded honestly, and the old woman chimed.
"Great, I will find time to come see you."
Though she visited the pack when she heard about Valerie’s pregnancy, she still felt like she had not done enough for the family.
"Ashley needs you more at this moment, so it’s fine. Myself, I’m also doing good," Valerie replied, wiping her worries away.
Valerie was strangely happy but could not discern why. It was not just because Ashley delivered her pup safely but something she could not put a finger on.
The air was cleared a month later when her joy was made complete. Well, the reason for that strange joy a month ago was made evident.
"Val, I gave birth to twins," Alessia announced excitedly. Valerie could picture her jumping up and down, wondering where she got all this energy when she delivered twins.
"A boy and a girl. Can you believe that?" Alessia could not stop expressing her excitement, just as Valerie gave her the patience of a tiger, even as Alessia continued to speak.
"These humans do scans to see what is in the womb but were not able to catch my twins. Val, I’m not exaggerating, but the boy looks like Denzel and the girl like Godic. I feel like I suffered for nothing. Their names are Genna and Grant," Alessia expressed with a heartbreaking sigh.
Valerie did not believe it until Denzel showed her a picture of the babies which Godic sent to Denzel. Speechless, Denzel spoke up as he waited for Valerie to recover from the shock.
Alessia was not exaggerating because the babies were exactly as she described them.
"They have to be introduced to the pack," Denzel interrupted, Alessia paused for a while before responding.
"Well, Godic and I want them to have more human experience until their teenage years. Don’t worry. We shall train them well."
Valerie was suddenly feeling nostalgic, saying, "Alessia, I feel like I’m losing you."
Alessia chuckled and quickly responded. "No, you aren’t, but it’s difficult for me to switch back to the human world after leaving the pack, so I thought to leave it so."
The understanding finally settled in as neither Denzel nor Valerie thought about something like that happening to them. "My nephews would miss out on the pack," Denzel said, but Alessia explained it even more.
"Well, you have to also remember that it’s very hard for children to keep secrets. They would be too young to understand that our world must be kept secret and go about telling their peers about our pack and whatnot."
As Denzel went into deep thought, Valerie had recovered from her shock from earlier, exclaiming.
"Wow. Our brains are functioning differently because I never thought about it that way."
"We just understand the human world better because we have lived here longer," Godic said from the end of the line, Denzel and Valerie no longer had anything to discourage them.
After ending the call, Valerie asked Denzel. "Do you agree for it to be so for them?"
Denzel thought for a while before a sigh escaped him. "What else can I do? Right now, we have an heir so there is no need to worry."
The understanding was made clear to Valerie, as she asked, "If we didn’t have an heir?"
"Then they would be forced to return," Denzel shrugged. It was good that the moon goddess gave them a backup and just as Alessia said, Grant looked so much like Denzel.
"You are so heartless," Valerie punched him on the shoulder, Denzel shrugged, not too disturbed.
"When it comes to pack matters, there is no better way."
"Sure, I get it perfectly," Valerie finally agreed with him.
As the days passed, they soon landed on a few days to Alice’s birthday. Valerie was in her ninth month, but since their pups took ten months in the womb in contrast to the nine months humans used, she still had one month to go.
Her energy level was not top-notch, but she was still more active than those of her kind.
Valerie developed a love for the sun, and her bump had become huge, being her ninth month.
Every day, she prayed earnestly to the moon goddess to let her deliver before any war, especially when she began to lose her energy in her third trimester, and preparations ongoing for Alice’s birthday celebration.
Her appetite had increased, and so was her bump. Denzel never went a day without getting intimate with her, but this time, the weight on her belly caused her to be a little slower than she was before, with fatigue slowly slurping in.
It was close to her delivery date, and yet, she was having another blissful moment in bed with her mate when the dreadful war sirens were let out, causing Valerie’s heart to fall into her stomach.
