He chuckled. "I understand that. I can't wait until lunchtime. I am going to get myself one as soon as I go."
"Is it your break?"
He nodded. "For a few more minutes anyways."
"My lunch is over at five thirty. So excited to go back."
There was heavy sarcasm in her voice when she said it.
"I understand. This is better than my last job though, so I can't complain too much."
Elisa shrugged, munching on her fries as he talked.
"This is my first call center job. I had a retail job before this, but this is better pay for the job we do."
She swallowed. "My last job was retail too. It was not too bad, but I would love to get hired at a library."
His face turned curious at her words."A library?"
She nodded, wiping her fingers as she finished her fries.
"I started going to school for Library Science to be a librarian. I dropped out after a while though, so I didn't quite finish it. However, I hope that what I did learn I could use towards getting a job in the library."
"What about you? Did you have a dream job?"
She could see he was thinking for a moment.
"I actually am an engineer. I just have not been able to get hired anywhere I'd like to work."
She had to physically control her jaw from dropping in reply.
"I tried to apply even for internships, but there were none available at the time. I moved here from California and thought that it might be easy since I had been with my previous company for over a year."
"Why did you move?" she asked, curious now.
He hesitated briefly, and she rested her hand on his.
"It's none of my business. You moved, and that's all."
Her body warmed at the touch of her hands on his; her eyes rising to connect with his.
They stared at one another intensely for a moment until someone knocked over a drink at another table, breaking the spell.
Elisa looked down at their joined hands and she pulled hers away.
Awkwardly he looked at his watch. "The bell tolls for me. Time to go back."
She laughed and said goodbye, watching him as he walked away.
He was tall, probably about six feet or more, and had muscular arms; his chest broad and his shoulders wide.
Gage had black hair like hers, but oh his eyes. Those grass green orbs made her tremble, so intense when they gazed at her.
Without realizing it, she sighed, looking around as she noticed that there were people staring at her.
She put her head down and finished her lunch, throwing the trash away and heading back to her desk. She realized that she still had over ten minutes left so she walked around the floor, saying hi to people.
She stopped at Esme's desk and waited for her to get off her call.
