With a sigh, Esme looked up at her friend and smiled her best fake smile.
"Time to get back to work."
Elisa chuckled.
"Have fun!"
Esme rolled her eyes, making Elisa laughed harder as Esme stood and stuck her phone in her pocket, sauntering out the door as Danny walked in.
"Hi there," he chirped as he sat down at the table next to Elisa.
She waved at him as she took another big bite of her burger.
He laughed at her and then leaned overconspiratorially and whispered, "There is a rumor through the grapevine that someone likes someone."
Elisa rolled her eyes and swallowed her bite of burger.
"You are not talking about Gage and I are you?"
He leaned back and put his hands together on the tabletop. He looked at her with a mischievous grin on his face.
“Maaaaaaybe."
Elisa could feel another blush coming on and she cleared her throat.
"There is nothing going on. We had a nice conversation earlier about me running in to him. Don't make more of it than it is."
It was his turn to roll his eyes.
"Why not? He has been looking for you every time he gets up to do anything or ask a question."
She looked him square in the eye.
"You know I do not date anyone I work with. I learned from last time."
He scowled darkly. "Eric is a colossal asshat. He didn't deserve you anyways."
Elisa put her burger down and rested her hand on top of his.
"Calm down. He doesn't work in this building anymore so it's all right now."
She squeezed his hands and then went back to eating, her heart aching now with the mention of her ex.
He is your past, look forward to your future now.
She repeated that mantra in her head for the next few minutes, Danny going to get a drink from one of the coolers.Taking the last bite of her burger, she wiped her fingers, freezing when she heard a voice behind her.
"May I join you?"
She turned around and looked at Gage, smiling as she nodded.Swallowing quickly, she said, "Sure. I'd love the company."
Danny was walking back to the table when he saw Gage there.
She watched as he waved and walked out of the room, the look on his face making her want to hit him.
"So how is your lunch?" he asked, motioning to the burger wrapper and fries.
"It is delicious. Just what I needed."
