She slipped her arm through his good one and rested her head on his shoulder, a sigh coming from her.
“Are you all right?” he asked, turning to press a soft kiss to her forehead.
“I just feel so awful for you. You didn’t sign up for any of this, and it’s not your fault that any of this happened to you.”
She lifted her head and looked at him.
“I am so sorry this happened.”
He cupped her face in his hand and leaned over, pressing a kiss to her lips this time.
“I got involved as soon as Erin started cheating on me with Eric. This is not your fault. We just happened to meet and now, we are together, and they are jealous. That is their problem, not ours.”
“Are you sure? You can still leave, if that’s what you want.”
He pulled away from her, his eyes suddenly serious.
“Do you want me to leave?”
She shook her head.
“No…I think I might be falling in love with you.”
He stared at her for a minute before answering, “I think I am falling in love with you too.”
In that moment, in the pharmacy after her ex-boyfriend attacked him, they said those words.
And that was Elisa’s first sign she was truly moving on.
Epilogue
One Year Later…
Elisa walked out of the bedroom and smiled, seeing Gage standing at the island in the kitchen.
She looked over at her left hand and sighed, staring at the sparkly diamond shining back at her.
Gage had proposed last night, and she of course had said yes.
She was so excited to marry him after all they had been through early in their relationship.
Eric had pled guilty to felony assault with a deadly weapon and had only gotten one year in prison as Gage and Elisa had spoken on his behalf, even though he truly did not deserve it.
He was also fined five thousand dollars.
After his sentencing, Erin had all but disappeared from their lives.
Elisa and Gage had stayed at Destin for about three months after that until Gage was hired with a large engineering firm in Austin and Elisa was hired as a part time helper at the library in Round Rock.
Gage’s lease had ended, and he moved into his grandmother’s house, Elisa all but living there while still having her apartment for a few more months.
Once her lease was up, she moved in and they had been together ever since.
“Hi babe,” she said with a yawn and a stretch.
She walked over to the island and ruffled Raina’s fur and scratched behind her ear, the husky’s tail wagging happily as she jumped up on Elisa.
“Get down silly pup.”
