Story: Pretty Poison

“I think it would be better that way. For now, at least.”

She agreed.

One last kiss was given to me before she returned to her pile of last night's clothes.

Veronica changed while I checked my phone for texts. When she finished, she came to me and placed her hands on my thighs, as I was sitting.

“Besides, you wanted a secret from me, right? Here it goes: I haven't stopped thinking about the idea of kissing you since I saw you in that storehouse.”

The confession left me a little stunned. Completely lost for words.

“You're a big bastard, you know that?!” I mocked.

“Oh, because you’re a saint, right…”

“Not even close to that, mainly because when I saw you standing there, looking at me, all I thought about was you doing that.” I admitted.

“You're no good.” She pushed me back onto the bed and turned her back to me. “But get ready, I want to at least have breakfast with you.”

I wanted to make fun of her for saying that she wanted, of her own free will, to have breakfast with me, but I decided to save the joke and did what she asked. However, as soon as I finished getting ready, I wanted to kill her right away.

“Wow, you're so obedient.” She teased.

“I'm not obeying you, I'm just obeying my hungry stomach.”

She laughed and we both left my room, finding a meditating Jazmine. In silence, we slipped out of my room. In the hallway, I felt her hand brush mine, after she looked both ways, checking that there was no one there and I thanked her for being so cautious.

We went to the cafeteria and ate calmly, laughing and remembering some traumatic experiences we had together. It was a nice quality time. I was afraid that we would feel some kind of awkwardness or a strange atmosphere, but none of that happened.

After we finished, Veronica walked me back to my room.

“Have a good trip, blondie.”

“Thank you, Roni. See you on Monday?”

She brought her hand to her chest dramatically.

“I'll count the hours for that.”

“Has anyone ever told you today that you're an idiot?”

“Wow, you're the ultimate romantic.” She mocked and left a kiss on my cheek before heading towards the stairs.

And as simple as the gesture was, I felt like my heart was going to come out of my mouth, the knot in my stomach and my skin was almost on fire. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced, even with Delilah. We were too intense.

I pulled my suitcase from the airport baggage conveyor and returned to Colleen, who was wrapped in more coats than when we arrived, after all, the temperature drop was brutal between Texas and South Dakota.

“Ready to see your parents again?” My cousin asked in pure mockery.

“No, but I have no other option.”

I grabbed the handle of the suitcase and dragged it into the lobby with Colleen following me. In the main part of the airport, it was easy to spot the tall blonde with a cream coat and a friendly face. AKA Mackenzie Winfrey, my mother.

I went down the escalators mentally praying that it would stop working or just that time would stop, so I wouldn't have to deal with the woman waiting for me, but none of that happened and soon I was in front of her.

“Hello, mom!”

“Kendra, Colleen.” She opened a wide smile and I would even say it was real, but my excitement about being home was zero.
