Story: Pretty Poison

“Alright, tell the pretty girls on the cheerleading team to go too” my brother asked and I almost considered going to the car to hit him.

Sometimes he still treated me like a regular high school cheerleader. But I was so much more than that, much more than easy dance moves and smiles before any sports game.

“The pretty girls on the cheerleading team… Did I hear that right?” A voice came from behind me and I turned to catch my two roommates with Kendra and two other girls.

Who had said that? Well, to my surprise, it wasn't Kendra, but rather Sidney, one of the girls on the team.

“You did. That idiot is my brother and you are invited to the party” I explained, giving up on coming up with any lame excuse for the scene that was forming there.

Derek would have to compensate me later.

A frat party at a rival college, an hour away and under the cares of the older brother of the girl I despise most in the universe... What could go wrong, right?! Well, absolutely everything, so I simply refrained from even bothering to participate.

However, Sidney and Jazmine seemed very excited. The two of them were getting ready in our living room while I was laying on the couch, absentmindedly scrolling through my cell phone. I spent the day waiting for a certain message, a confirmation, but until now I hadn't seen a single smoke signal from the person in question.

Hated that. It was a feeling of being stood up by someone I didn't even know personally and it made me nervous because it was out of my control.

“Red lipstick or just lip gloss? “Jaz questioned, lifting the two options from her makeup bag.

I take a second to consider the options, but Sid was quicker:

“Lip Gloss. If you're going to make out, you don't want to get it all stained later.”

“She’s got a point” I add.

Jazmine ended up following our suggestion while Sidney returned her focus to her magnifying mirror as he drew a double eyeliner of white and gold on his eyelids.

About half an hour later, they were both ready and I had settled into my pajamas.

“Are you sure you don't want to go?” Jaz wanted to know.

“No, you can go. Have fun, but not too much because tomorrow we have early practice.”

They both laughed and left the room waving at me.

I tossed and turned on the couch, considering whether I was truly feeling sorry for myself, or I would do something about the unanswered message. Maybe humiliating myself for attention was a good option for the night, but deep down, I knew that wasn't the case and that I would never do that.

I huffed in pure frustration when suddenly I heard knocking on the door. I thought one of the girls must have forgotten something, however, they wouldn't knock on the door.

“Come in!” I shouted anyway, too lazy to move from where I was.

The door opened, revealing a perfect Colleen dressed in a blue tube dress.

“Wow! Where are you going looking this stunning?”

“For the Alpha Phi Omega party.”

I laughed.

“You are going?!” I mocked, finally sitting down.

“And why the hell won't you go?” She teased me as she took hold of the pillow next to me.

“Because I don’t want to?!” Also because if I could avoid Veronica Torres, I would. It was enough for me to have practice with that bitch and still be in the same dorm building as her. Which I wouldn't admit to my cousin, or anyone else.

“Since when are you against parties, Ken?”

“Since when are you in favor of parties, Colleen?”
