Story: Pretty Poison

“What are you stilldoin’here?” the Texan accent reverberated strongly. Soon the analytical eyes captured me and I laughed awkwardly.

“Waiting for my boyfriend” I confessed and she made a face.

“Last time I checked, it was the bride who could be late, not the groom, if you know what I mean” she joked. “Need a ride to the dorm?” I smiled at her and denied it. “You sure? Last chance.”

“Yes, but thank you, coach.”

She nodded and got into the dark blue truck. Evans got into the passenger seat and soon I was alone in the parking lot again.

I stared at the streetlight and was grateful for at least having that as company.

“Hey, I'm here!” MJ shouted as he ran towards me. “Sorry I’m late, babe.”

I crossed my arms.

“Almost two hours, Martin. ALMOST. TWO. HOURS!” I raised my voice in the last part, bursting, patience long gone.

“Sorry, babe…” his tone was one of complaint, not one of honest apology. “I got distracted, okay? I missed the time. Besides, you shouldn't have left so early... You said you were going to leave later.”

“But I didn't leave. I texted you as soon as I was released and you didn't even bother to respond to my message.”

Martin brushed his curly blonde hair back with his fingers.

“Okay, whatever. Can we go?”

“I'm not wrong... “I replied.

“Yeah, yeah, but I'm not going to argue with you, Veronica. I came to be a nice boyfriend and accompany you to your room, that's all.”

I snorted and took the lead, walking at a certain distance from him.

I needed to calm down and just looking at those beautiful blue eyes wouldn't have any effect this time. MJ was being an idiot if he thought it was my fault he took so long. We had scheduled something. God, I hated that!

After almost five minutes of walking, he finally fell into step beside me. When we arrived in front of the dorm, his fingers wrapped around my arms, forcing me to stop.

“Hey, Roni...” I looked at him. “I'm sorry, okay? I made a mistake and it was bad. I promise to check my phone next time.”

I didn't want to forgive him, but it wouldn't do me any good to stay angry like that. I had already spent a good part of my practice like this with Kendra and... honestly? I was tired of that feeling.

I sighed.

“It’s fine” I approached him and stood on tiptoe so that my lips touched his. I let him wrap his arms around me better and, some moment later, I grabbed his curly strands, deepening our kiss.

Suddenly, a loud horn disturbed us. We faced the street looking for the crazy person and the person in question, of course, was my brother.

“Hey! Get a room, you two!” He mocked, almost shouting in front of the building where I lived. “There's a party today at the fraternity, do you want to come?”

“You drove an hour to ask me to your fraternity party?”

“No. Of course not!” Derek replied, almost as if I had offended his masculinity. “We came to get the beer barrels, it’s cheaper here.”

There was another guy in the car with him, but I didn't recognize him from that distance.

“Anyway, you're coming, right?!”

I looked at MJ, who sighed and shrugged. We needed to go and we both knew it.

“Sure!”
