Story: Pretty Poison
I went back to the car with Colleen to get the rest of my things and when we finally put all my boxes and suitcases on the floor of my new room, I was able to look at my cousin’s-tired face with a welcoming smile.
“Now it's official, huh?!” she joked, looking at me expectantly.
“It will be official when I have my Venenum uniform, Colleen, until then... It's still temporary.”
My cousin rolled her eyes.
“It's like politicians who continue to fight for an election even though they've already won...” she mocked. “You're already on the team, now you just have to be part of it, my dear cousin.”
I could understand her point, but it was difficult to feel like I belonged somewhere when I didn't feel like I belonged anywhere for all sorts of reasons.
Even so, I responded:
“You are right” I sighed. “Now go get some rest, because I intend to do the same.”
Colleen agreed and I walked her to the room door. We said goodbye and I went back to my cubicle, which apparently they called my bedroom. I sat on the bed and felt my muscles asking for some hot water to relax, so I started to pack my things togo to the bathroom, which, unfortunately, was at the end of the hallway and not inside the room.
However, my attention was quickly captured by my cell phone announcing the arrival of a new message on thegirlydatesapp. I opened it and saw that I had matched with someone. The name was just “H.”, but at least there was a photo of her face. And she was beautiful.
I opened my eyes, but it felt like I was living in an alternate reality where my life was a constant nightmare with Kendra in it. And worse, that bitch would be around for not only a quick nightmare, but for two damn years.
Would this be the moment I should start asking God for mercy so that He, perhaps, would take pity on my poor soul?
Fuck!
I stared at my cell phone screaming next to me, ringing my alarm clock. I took a deep breath and turned it off.
“Why is this set so early, Roni?” I heard MJ mumble behind my back as his arms wrapped around my waist, pulling me towards him.
“Because I need to get back to my accommodation, my love.”
He mumbled something incomprehensible behind my back before placing a kiss on my cheek. I felt like I was in a good dream with Martin, it was like being in a love bubble and I mentally thanked him for that. Only he was capable of taking me out of my current miserable reality.
“Can we at least have breakfast together?”
I turned over in bed and faced him, still drowsy.
“Yes we can.”
A wide smile crossed his face.
We got up and got ready. I was at least happy that he shared the room with just one other boy and he hadn't spent the night in there. I hadn't even met the boy yet, but I knew I should thank him one of these days.
After I finished making myself presentable the best I could, the two of us left hand in hand and went to a coffee shop. MJ carried his practice bag with him, because he would need to hit the pool soon after. His first practice session would be around nine o'clock, so it was a good idea for us to have an early breakfast.
After the pleasant morning with my boyfriend, I hardly even thought about the blonde devil that I would have to deal with from now on. However, when MJ dropped me off in front of my dorm, not only was it impossible to not to think about Kendra, but it was impossible to ignore the fact that she was leaving the same dorm I would be living in for the next few years.
“What are you doing here? “I asked, immediately irritated.
“Good morning to you too, Torres.” I didn't answer her. “I live here, you fool.
“In that dorm building?”
“Yes!”
I snorted. This was getting worse every second.
I walked past Kendra and entered the building.
