Story: Pretty Poison
“Never! He's so handsome, I can't do that.”
“And you're a big hottie on the college cheerleading team.” I made it clear. “Shame on you, Sidney!”
Someone laughed at what I said behind my back. When I turned around, I found Logan staring at us.
“Kendra is right!” He added the comment.
I smiled, cocky. “See! I'm always right in the end.”
Karlee then began our workout. I ended up being one of the first to go to the mat to do the tumblers and jumps.
I did exactly what she asked the first time and I was satisfied with my performance. I received compliments and everything, so I did the same sequence again, trying to get in sync with Troian, who did mirrored movements and jumps. On the third attempt, we managed to get it right and even celebrated a little.
“You're very good, Kendra.” Troian commented gently.
“Thank you, you too!”
“Go get hydrated, I'll call other people to do the jumps.” Karlee announced, dismissing us for now.
I went back to Jaz's side, as the next one to go practice jumping was Sidney. I stretched out and drank practically the entire contents of my bottle. I was a little out of shape due to the holidays, so I needed to get back to my previous performance and strive to improve that. Maybe I would have to go to the gym, to strengthen my muscles and do aerobic exercises to improve my physical conditioning. I made a mental note about this. I still needed to consider, after all, that I hated gyms. And then I noticed Veronica sitting in the corner with her cell phone, looking nervous. She was even biting her nails.
Not that I gave a single fuck, for me she could devour her own fingers and I couldn't care less, however, something inside memade my curiosity scream loudly. Or maybe it was just the desire to upset her.
I got up from where I was.
“Ken…” Jaz tried to dissuade me, she seemed to read me well.
“I'm just going to refill the bottle.” We both knew it was a lie. I walked to the water fountain and took a closer look at Veronica. She was sitting there with her cell phone almost shaking in her hand. I pressed the button to turn on the water to fill my bottle. “May I ask what…”
“No.” The answer was short and to the point.
“Okay…” I finished what I needed to do and turned my back to her, however, her voice trailed behind me.
“You were right yesterday.”
I turned my heels and stared at her.
“Hm… At what exact moment was I right yesterday? Because you know, I'm always right.” Veronica's face seemed to melt a little, I wasn't sure if she wanted to kill me or just cry. “Your face is bothering me, so please speak out, Veronica!”
“Gosh, how can you be unbearable at all times, Kendra? Full of yourself, arrogant and petty!”
I opened my mouth to respond to her, but... honestly? My day was going very well. I had nailed the sequence of the routine that Karlee wanted and was going to meet Hayley later, I didn't need a creature as unpalatable as Veronica to ruin it. “Okay, fuck you!”
I returned to my roommates, ignoring her annoying presence in my life. At some point during training, Karlee called Veronica to do her part and the girl fell over her stun. It was asimple movement, something I was sure I'd seen that skank do countless times.
“She seems too distracted today…” Jaz commented, observantly.
I didn't want to dwell on it, but my mouth was faster than my brain.
“She looks like a piece of shit, that's for sure. That's it, who makes a mistake in something as simple as that jump? I've seen her do much more than that, and do it perfectly.”
“So... You watch her, like a lot...” Sidney teased, which forced me to give her a deadly look.
“We were competitors for years, I know where she is good and where she is bad. As I'm sure she knows that kind of thing about me.” I stated succinctly. Because that was the truth. I knew her flaws and what she was bad at. I mean, she was not truly bad at anything, but she wasn't perfect either. She still had a lot to work on and she knew it as well as I did.
I noticed Karlee calling her and talking to her. Even from afar, it was visible that Veronica was shaken by something and I was annoyed that she wasn't keeping her head 100% in training, that would impact the whole team.
I took a deep breath, gathering all the calm I had inside me and stood up.
