Page 96 of The Betrayal You Serve
There are raised voices behind me but I don't hear a word of them as I pull back to find Kane's pained blue eyes on me.
"You're going to be okay," I tell him, cupping his rough cheek gently in an attempt not to hurt him.
"I know," he says. "You're here."
My heart splinters in my chest at his words.
"We're going to get you out of here. You're going to be okay," I repeat, more for myself than anyone else.
"Why did you bring that whore here?" Victor's vicious tone sends a shiver down my spine and without thinking I stand and turn to him.
"What did you call me?" I bark, marching toward him without a second thought.
"Letty," Reid warns but I ignore him as I continue toward his father with every muscle in my body ready to fight.
"A whore. Just like your mother. Tsk." He shakes his head at me. "Coming in here and trying to save that cunt. He's just as fucking useless as you."
"Let him fucking go," I scream, flying toward him to help make my point but arms wrap around my waist, stopping me from making contact with Victor and I'm hauled back into a hard, warm body.
"Enough, Princess," Kane growls in my ear.
"Shit, Kane." I rip myself out of his arms and spin around. He's on his feet but he's swaying slightly, the gunshot in his shoulder still oozing bright red blood.
"I'm leaving," he tells Victor. "I'll assume you accept my terms and will leave me the fuck alone. You've left your mark." He points to his shoulder. "If you keep up the rest, you'll get what I promised."
Wrapping my arm around Kane's waist in an attempt to help, we turn to walk out. We're at the door when Victor speaks, clearly needing to get in the last word.
"You go back on this and you're all fucking dead. The lot of you."
His warning ripples through me turning my blood to ice. He doesn't say their names but I know he's referring to my family along with Kyle.
"Don't listen to him, Princess. You're all safe."
Kane looks over his shoulder at Victor one last time before we walk out of the door with Reid and Devin hot on our heels. The door has barely slammed behind us when Kane's legs give out.
"Oh shit," I gasp as he slips out of my hold but by the time I turn to him, both Reid and Devin have him.
"We've got him, keep going."
All eyes turn our way as we hurry through the communal area where the guys are hanging out. A couple look like they want to help, but the second they clock Reid, they quickly settle back down and continue with what they were doing.
"It's unlocked," Reid says when we get to his truck and I rush around them to pull the back door open.
Kane is now limp between the two of them, his head hanging low and his shoulder still spilling blood that's more than soaked his white shirt.
Somehow, they manage to maneuver him so he's laying across the back seat the second they move, I rush to climb inside him but before I get there, a hand lands on my upper arm.
"I won't let anything happen to him," Reid says softly.
I glance up at his concerned eyes.
"It's a little late for that, don't you think?" I spit, nowhere near as scared of him as I once was.
"He'll be okay," he says before stepping around the door and waiting to get inside.
I climb in and lift Kane's legs onto my lap before he slams the door closed and drops into the driver's seat while Devin takes the passenger side.
No words are said as we back out of the space and speed away from the clubhouse.
