Page 92 of The Betrayal You Serve
Fuck.
I tell Reid about Kane not showing up and he also tries his cell, only to find the same as me. It just rings out.
Anger hardens his face but he doesn't say anything or give anything away which only serves to piss Devin off.
"I know you know something, so can you fucking spit it out?"
"No, I can't. You just need to trust me."
"You know, that's getting harder and harder right now. I know you're the one behind our supply issue. Care to explain that one?"
"No. What's going on is bigger than your fucking supply."
"Well, did you want to tell Victor that because he's been riding our asses? If we don't do what he wants, then he won't initiate us."
"Of course he will. You're his fucking blood."
"You sure about that? He doesn't seem to give a fuck about Gray."
Reid's lips press into a thin line as his patience with his brother begins to run out.
"Enough, okay. I just need you to trust that I have all our futures—Kane's included—as my first priority right now. So will you just do as I say and shut the fuck up."
"Jesus, who got your panties in a twist? You need to get fucking laid or something, bro."
Reid actually growls like a wild animal at his brother's comment.
"Let's fucking go," he barks, physically shoving Devin in the direction of the front door.
"Where are we going?" I ask, hoping to calm the situation down a little.
"The clubhouse. If Victor's got him, that's where he'll be."
Fear freezes me to the spot at the thought of going back there. Images of Victor hurting my dad flicker through my mind, only it's not my dad sitting in that chair, it's Kane.
My vision blurs so I don't see Reid come to a stop in front of me and crouch down so we're at eye level.
"Letty, Letty. Scarlett," he snaps, dragging me from my nightmare. "Everything is going to be okay. I got both of you out of there, almost unharmed. I'll do the same for Kane. Victor just wants to issue his warning but he won't win. Not against me."
"W-what are you playing at?" I don't mean for the question to come out loud, but listening to him talk, I can't help but think he's got his own agenda where his father is concerned.
"That's for me to know, Princess."
A sob erupts at his use of Kane's nickname for me.
"If he's not okay, Reid. I-I don't k-know—"
"He'll be fine. We're one step ahead of that cunt. You have nothing to worry about.”
"You're kinda scary, you know that?" I ask as he wraps his arm around my shoulders and guides me toward the door that Devin's already disappeared through.
"I've been told a time or two, yeah." He chuckles, leading me outside and toward his truck.
