Page 110 of The Betrayal You Serve
"It'll happen."
"I hope so," I say, leaning forward to get my coffee. It's too hot to drink, so I just hug the mug and blow a stream of air across the top.
"I'm staying at your mom's place with Har so you guys can have some space."
"No, Ky. You don't need to move out because of me."
"I know I don't, but I think you two should have some alone time while he heals. I don't mind being there. Your mom's pretty awesome."
I smile at him, equally pleased that they get on so well and sad for him that he lost his own parents so young.
"Come over for dinner in a few days, yeah? I've got this week off classes so I can cook something."
"Sure thing. We'll let you know when. Things are kinda crazy for both of us with the team and cheer."
"Even more reason why you need a decent meal."
"Already looking forward to it."
We chat about Rosewood and life as a high school senior while Kane rests or sulks, I'm not sure which, before Kyle excuses himself to head to Mom's.
I pull him in for a hug before he excuses himself, feeling like after everything with Kane that he needs it.
"See you soon, yeah?" he says somewhat awkwardly after accepting my embrace for a few seconds.
"You got it."
I wave him off before turning back into the house to find Kane watching me from his bedroom doorway.
"Using your Hunter charm on Kyle now, eh?" he asks with a smirk.
"Well, we both know you have a weakness when it comes to us."
"That, Scarlett Hunter, is very, very true."
"Are you okay?" I ask him hesitantly.
"Yeah, I'll be fine." He walks toward me and takes my hand. Together we drop down onto the couch. "Just being back here, it reminds me of all the things I don't know how to deal with right now. Rent on this place, a job, college. I just hate being so unsure of everything."
"One problem at a time," I tell him. "How much money do you have, and how long can you realistically keep this place?"
"Probably a few months, but I'd have nothing left."
"Okay, so we need to look at living arrangements. Kyle just told me he wants to go to college next year so this place won't be needed soon. Maybe he could live with Mom and Harley for a few months before they start college. We could get our own place near MKU whether you're at college or not, I can get a job to help pay."
He stares at me with an unreadable expression on his face.
"As for college and work, we're just going to have to wait and see what happens. Have you heard anything yet?"
He shakes his head. "I'll call Mom for an update."
Reaching out, he wraps his arm around my waist and slides me closer to him. "I love you. Scarlett Hunter."
"Hmmm," I mumble into his kiss. I have no idea if he's giving me an out from having to say it or is actually terrified to hear it at this point.

"Who is that?" Kane groans the following night when we're curled up on the couch watching some sickly sweet movie he put on, apparently for my benefit. I think it was just an excuse to feel me up on the couch to be honest because neither of us are actually paying any attention to the TV.
