Page 45 of The Betrayal You Serve
"What about the rest of the team? They deserve you getting benched because you can't keep your fucking head?"
Luca doesn't hear a word of his brother's warning because he pulls his arm back, fist clenched with a determined look on his face.
The only thing he forgets is just how fast I am because I move long before he throws the punch and he ends up stumbling forward before colliding with the wall.
"You're not going to win this fight, Dunn," I mutter, finally throwing my bag over my shoulder and taking a step toward the door. "Letty is mine. It's time you get that into your head and move the fuck on."
I stare at him for a beat as he leans against the wall with his head hung in defeat before ripping the door open and marching through it.
I don't stop until I'm in my car with the engine running. Then I rest my head back and close my eyes for a beat, still trying to convince myself to just go home. Sitting forward, I move my arm to put the car in drive when my passenger door opens and a body drops into the seat.
"What the fuck?" I bark, looking over at my uninvited visitor. "Get the fuck out."
"We need to talk," he says, keeping his eyes focused on the building in front us.
"If you're gonna sit there and tell me just how sweet she tastes, then I'll save you the fucking bother because I already know. I had her last night."
His fists curl in his lap but he doesn't bite, unlike his brother.
"I know, you left your mark."
"Oh good, you saw. You need—"
"That wasn't for my benefit though, was it? You might know that I…" He trails off, probably knowing that I really don't need to hear the fucking words. "But you don't seem pissed at me."
Reaching out, I squeeze the wheel, my knuckles turning white with the force.
"He's in love with her." The words spill from my lips before I've even realized that I've thought them.
"He thinks he is, yeah," Leon mutters.
"He thinks?"
"Yeah, it's complicated."
I finally look over at him and raise a brow. He sighs, clearly not wanting to give away his brother's secrets. But I don't let up and after a few tense seconds, he starts talking.
"Letty showed up right when Luca needed a distraction."
"The beginning of the season," I guess, and he nods.
"We took the championship last year, now the pressure is on. And our dad… well, he doesn't make it any easier on him."
I know of their dad, everyone does. Brett Dunn played in the NFL, he's got a stellar record and a legacy he wants to pass down to his boys, no matter the cost, it seems.
From what I've heard, their younger brother, Shane, didn't sign to a college team and has instead become a father. I can't imagine that went down very well with Daddy Dunn.
"None of this is my problem, Dunn."
"Maybe not, but he's your captain and if you want a successful year, the best way to do it isn't to piss him off."
"I wasn't the one who threw the first punch."
"Today you weren't but the bruises on his face suggest otherwise."
"She doesn't want him, what do you want me to do about that exactly?"
"Stop rubbing it in his fucking face."
