Page 65 of The Betrayal You Serve
"Princess, I-I didn't know. I—" He looks over his shoulder as a car starts and then drives off.
"I can tell," I say but my voice lacks the lightness it usually has.
"Shit," he mutters, looking totally thrown by this situation.
"I need to leave."
"W-what?" he stutters, staring at me as I rise from the couch with deep frown lines forming on his brow. "No, please."
"No, Kane. This isn't happening." I march toward him, or more so the front door. "We're done. Excuse me."
I take a step to slip around him but—unsurprisingly—I don't get a chance because his hot fingers circle my wrist, stopping my escape.
"We're not done, Princess. Not even close."
"Kane, I can't do this. I told you, I refuse to be a part of this life. The games, the lies, the bullshit."
"Can we just talk, please? There's so much I need to tell you."
All the air rushes from my lungs at the sincerity in his voice.
My head tells me to say no and keep walking out the door and out of his life. But I already know that doing that would be useless. There's someone out there that clearly wants us together because the universe seems to keep throwing us together no matter how explosive it is when we collide.
"Kane," I sigh, already feeling myself giving in to his burning touch and the vulnerability in his voice.
"Please," he begs, and I crumble.
Turning back to him, I look up into his eyes. The blue I'm so used to is sparking with something I've never seen before. Emotion. Hope. Whatever it is, the usual anger is long gone.
"You've got ten minutes and then I'm out that door."
"Okay," he whispers, tugging on my arm so I have no choice but to step into his body.
I fight against him but he's too strong. His other hand lifts to cup the side of my neck and I melt into his familiar hold.
"I missed you," he breathes, dropping his head to mine.
"This isn't talking, Kane," I warn. "Your time is running out."
He blows out a breath and he reluctantly releases me.
I don't retake my seat on the couch, instead, I take the chair, ensuring that he can't sit beside me and cloud my judgment with his burning touch.
"Ten minutes," I remind him as he sits in front of me on the couch. He perches on the edge, resting his elbows on his knees and looks up at me through his lashes. All his regrets are clear to see on his face and I can't help but soften to him despite the fact he hasn’t said a word yet, well not one to make any of this better.
"She's not pregnant, Let. I fucking promise you that."
"Then why did she say she was?" I sit back in the chair and cross one leg over the other in an attempt to look nonchalant, I don't think I achieve it at all when his lips twitch into a smirk.
He blows out a breath as his hand once again goes to his hair.
"One of the things I did for Victor since Kyle went down was to… entertain people."
"People?" I deadpan.
"Women. Kyle got put down for drugs and I refused to go anywhere near them, so he made use of my other… skills."
I snort in disbelief. "Right."
