Page 46 of The Betrayal You Serve
I want to argue with him, but it's pointless.
"He thinks she can make it all better. He needs something to focus on. But it's not her."
"Right," I say, rubbing my palms down my thighs and stretching my legs out. "What exactly are you trying to tell me, Dunn? I already know she's not his because she's mine."
His jaw drops in shock and he seems to forget everything he was about to say.
"That woman," I confess. "She’s not pregnant. She's just a bitch I've had the displeasure of spending time with, and not by choice. The only woman I want carrying my kid again is Letty."
His entire body stills at my words and I immediately realize my mistake.
He doesn't know.
"A-again."
I scrub my hand over my jaw as I figure out what to say next. "Shit."
"Letty was pregnant?"
"Y-yeah. She miscarried our baby at twenty weeks. She was alone, grieving, and pretty much suicidal. It's why she left Columbia. I had no fucking clue," I add quickly before he turns this on me.
"S-she… fuck," he breathes, sinking down in his chair as my words hit him.
"If I knew, man. I would have—"
"It's okay. I know. Fuck, man." Leon leans forward, dropping his head into his hands as he absorbs what I've just told him.
I let him have his moment and stare out at the building before us.
"I didn't want any of this. I just want to play football, you know? Have a life outside of my past, make something of myself." The words fall from my lips.
"Do you love her?" he asks, damn near giving me whiplash.
I turn to look at him and he nods, clearly seeing the answer in my reaction.
"Fight for her, Kane. If she's really what you want, prove it to her. Put her above everything else because if she's the one, then that's all that matters, right?"
My lips part to respond, but I don't have any words.
"And you're okay with that?" I finally ask.
"Hell no, I think you're an asshole. But Letty is one of my closest friends and I want her to be happy. And if that's you, then so be it."
"Right."
"Just… sort your fucking life out. She's been through enough already."
He's got the door open and is half off the seat when I speak.
"Please don't tell anyone."
"Kane, I'm not fucking stupid," he snaps. Although I think we both realize that he might be, seeing as he's basically just given me his blessing to go after her. I know in the grand scheme of things, it means nothing. But right now, hearing those words from him, it feels kinda big.
He stands, wraps his hands around the roof of my car and leans in.
"Stay away from Luca. Prove to Letty that you can actually be fucking trusted, and I think we might just have something."
"I don't swing that way, man. But thanks for the offer," I deadpan.
