Page 91 of The Betrayal You Serve
"Breathe in, breathe out," he repeats this until I begin to follow orders and my heart begins to slow.
"Okay, I think I'm good," I whisper after long minutes of panic.
"He'll be okay. He hasn't been through everything he has to give up now."
"He might not have a choice."
"Have faith, Letty. Kane and Reid have been planning for this. I have no idea what they've schemed up or what they've got over Victor but I have every confidence that they know what they're doing."
"Well, I'm glad one of us feels that way," I mutter as we pass the sign for Harrow Creek.
A shudder rips through me as we drive into a place I'd quite happily never set foot in again.
There are so many questions I want to ask Devin about all of this, but when I glance over at him and see the hard set of his jaw, I decide against it.
He's made it very clear in the past few weeks that he's not my biggest fan, so I figure the less we talk the better.
"Holy shit. Reid lives here," I gasp as he pulls to a stop before a massive set of secluded gates.
"Why, did you expect him to live in a cute little pink house with a picket fence?" he asks, amusement in his tone as the gates magically open for him.
"Well, no. But this place is haunted, isn't it?" I ask.
He pulls through and we make our way up the long driveway.
"That's what kids in Harrow Creek High like to spread. Truth is, the only one raining down terror in this place is my brother."
"Is that meant to make me feel better?"
"Absolutely not. It's probably best you realize now that my brother is a special breed of fucked up."
I swallow nervously.
I know Reid is… scary. Okay, terrifying, but I'm wondering if I might have underestimated him.
The imposing building emerges before us and a shiver of fear rolls through me at just the sight of the dark architecture.
"Welcome to the house of the devil," Devin announces as he pulls to a stop out front.
"T-the house of the w-what?" I ask, thinking I just misheard him.
"Come on, Princess. Let's go and find out what the fuck our boy is up to."
I climb out of the car after Devin and follow him to the huge ominous black door.
He doesn't bother knocking, instead, he just pushes through the door. I assume he knows we're here and follows Devin inside.
"Yo, bro. Where you at?"
"Kitchen."
The inside isn't half as scary as the outside. All the walls are a soft gray color and the furniture is all black but it's warm and somewhat homely, I guess. I look into a room that seems to be the living room as we pass, again everything is black and it's got a huge flat screen on the wall. It screams bachelor pad.
"Letty, this is a surprise," he says, giving me a double-take as I trail behind Devin.
"Do you know where he is?" I ask, desperation clear in my tone.
"N-no. Why?"
