Page 100 of The Betrayal You Serve
His eyes flutter open and the second I get to look into his slightly glazed blue eyes, I let out a massive sigh of relief.
"Hey, Princess."
"Oh my God." I can't stop the sob that rips from my throat or the tears that spill from my eyes at seeing and hearing him. "When we walked in… I thought… I thought you were…"
"Baby, I'm fine."
"You have a fucking hole in your shoulder."
"Meh." He shrugs, instantly regretting the move because he winces in pain.
"Do you need some pain relief? The doctor left some pills."
"I'm good. All I need is you." I swoon at his words. "Come here." He lifts his arm on his non-injured side and gestures for me to cuddle against him.
"I don't want to hurt you."
"You won't. Just lay with me for a bit."
Once again silence falls around us and the sound of his breathing gets heavier. After the stress of the afternoon, I find my own eyes drifting closed and I soon join him in sleep. Although it's fitful because I'm overly aware of moving too much and hurting him.
When I finally come to a while later and open my eyes, the room is in darkness, only the light of the moon from the window on the opposite wall illuminating it and the bed beside me is empty.
"Kane?" I cry in panic.

Kane
Istand with my shoulder resting against the doorframe as I watch her sleep. The moonlight illuminates one side of her beautiful face and I can't help thinking that she looks like an angel. My angel.
Hell knows how long Victor and his goons would have kept me locked in that room for if she didn't raise the alarm that I never turned up.
I'm pretty sure I've done nothing in my life to deserve her, everything's been fucked up and twisted for almost as long as I can remember, but fuck if I don't want to keep her and try to turn everything around.
I didn't hear everything Reid said to her earlier, I was drifting in and out. But he was right, my destiny was never the Hawks. It doesn't run through my blood like it does his. He's wanted it from the second he learned the truth about his father and his life, all I wanted was football.
I let out a sigh knowing that I might have screwed up that opportunity now but with my eyes still on Letty, I know that I'll find my way even if college is no longer an option for me. I've got her, I'm free from Victor as long as I make good on my promises, which Reid will deal with for me, the rest can just fall into place, hopefully.
A smile curls at my lips as I watch her stir. My body aches like fuck after the beating I took at the hands of Victor's henchmen and the burning through my shoulder where the cunt shot me, but she's worth all the pain and more.
She turns to where I was and stretches her arm out to find me. The second she realizes I'm not there, her eyes fly open and she sits up.
"Kane?"
"I'm right here, Princess."
Her eyes find me and her entire body sags with relief.
"You should be in bed," she warns, running her eyes up and down the length of me inspecting each of my cuts and bruises.
"I'm fine."
"I'm sorry, you're anything but fine. You were shot, Kane. Shot."
I can't help but laugh at her. "I know, baby."
Pushing from the wall, I slowly make my way back to the bed.
