Page 83 of The Betrayal You Serve
"You're welcome. I have no doubt you'd have done the same for me if you were here when Ky and I were fucking everything up."
"I got your back, always." I wink as I release her.
"Are we ready to do this shit then?" Kyle asks. "I want to pretend that I'm a kid again with no cares in the world."
"Hell yes," Kane agrees, and together we pay for the admission and walk through to join the happy crowds inside the makeshift fence.
We move from ride to ride, from game to game. The guys get more and more competitive with each one they try, although much to our amusement, they're pretty shit at most. Kane smashes Kyle on the shooting games which only confirms all the things he's been doing the past few years that I probably shouldn't want the details of. But I do. I want to know everything. Every single dark and dirty part of the enigma that is Kane Legend.
"You happy?" he asks me as we finally walk toward the Ferris wheel at the back of the park. I've got a stuffed dog under my arm and a bag of cotton candy in my hand.
"Are you kidding?" I ask, lifting both up. "I'm in heaven right now."
"I won't take that personally," he mutters with a smirk. "Thought I was the only one to take you there."
"You did bring me here."
He barks out a laugh and I can't help but join him.
Pulling some of the pink fluff from the bag, I lift it to his lips.
He parts them but leans forward so far that when he wraps his lips around the fluff, he takes my fingers with it. His tongue caresses over my digits, sending heat straight to my core.
His eyes darken as they hold mine, full of wicked ideas and filthy promises.
"Kane," I warn. “There are kids around.”
"Don't tell me you've never enjoyed the dark corners of a fairground, Scarlett Hunter."
My cheeks heat as I remember one time with Riley. It was right before we moved and I was still holding onto the idea that we'd be able to make the long-distance thing work.
"So I thought. Tell me everything," he demands, putting his hands on my hips and walking me backward until I bump into the side of a baseball throw stand.
"You really want to know?" I ask, my brow lifting.
"Humor me."
"Riley—" Kane's eyelids lower at the mention of his name. It's clear after all these years that he hasn't dealt with it. It only confirms my thoughts from last night about him not having a chance to grieve for any of them. "We didn't go all the way or anything but… yeah."
"I miss him," Kane confesses quietly.
Reaching up, I cup his rough jaw. "I know. He was a good person. The world is a worse place without him."
"Is it really bad that I don't feel guilty about this when you were his first?" he asks, his lips brushing mine as he does.
"He'd be happy we finally found our way to each other," I confess.
"Yeah, I like to think so. But if he's looking down on us right now, it's probably better that he averts his gaze.”
I laugh at his goofiness, but he makes use of my parted lips and captures them in a knee-weakening kiss.
When we finally emerge from behind the baseball throw, my body is burning from his kisses and I'm desperate to drag him off elsewhere to finish the job he started, sadly though, he seems to have other ideas.
"Come on, I want to whisper sweet nothings in your ear on the top of the Ferris wheel."
Tightening his hold on my hand, he pulls me toward the entrance.
"Sweet nothings? When have you ever whispered those?" I joke.
