Page 31 of The Betrayal You Serve
By the time we get back to the parking lot, the sun has almost set behind us casting a stunning orange glow on everything.
Looking back over my shoulder, I take one final look at the ocean and suck in a deep lungful of salty air, grounding myself and preparing for what drama my week might hold.
"Ready?" Harley asks me, pausing beside me for a few minutes while I soak up the last of the peace.
"Yeah. Time to pull up my big girl panties."
"You've got this, Let. I've got faith in you."
"Thanks," I whisper, turning back toward the lot and heading for her car. "Wait," I say, my hand landing on her forearm as the back of a very familiar gunmetal gray car disappears from the lot. "Was that…" I trail off, not believing my eyes.
No, it couldn't have been. He wouldn't have… he wouldn't have followed me here. Right?
"Was that what?" Harley asks, clearly missing the back end of the car by the time she looked up. "I didn't see anything."
"It doesn't matter. I was probably imagining things," I say, trying to play it off like it's nothing but the speed of my racing heart tells me that's not the case.
That was him. Something inside me knows it was.
But why?
"You really need to deal with all this, Let. It's making you crazy. Well, crazier than you've always been."
"Thanks, Har."
"So, any chance you could come back for a little longer, and with a little warning next time. It would be great to spend the weekend together or something," Harley asks as we head home.
"What about the weekend?" I ask, already keen to leave again and I haven’t even returned yet.
"Isn't it homecoming? Won't you want to be there for the game and the party?"
I think of Luca and Kane. Neither of them are going to want me at the game. But their next couple of games are away, and I won't get the chance to go.
I blow out a breath, knowing that no matter how much they might hate me right now, that I'm not going to be able to miss the game, to miss seeing them kick ass on the field.
"I could come back after the game. Have a girly night in?"
"That sounds perfect. I'll tell Kyle he has to spend the night with the guys, and we can have the house to ourselves."
"Or we could just stay home," I suggest, not really wanting to be in Kane's house.
"I'll sort something out. Eeek, I'm excited," she says, jumping from the car. "You coming in or heading straight back?"
I sigh. "I really should get back."
"Letty, just go and talk to him. Lay everything out on the table and see what happens."
"When did you get so wise, Harley Hunter?" I ask, pulling her in for a hug.
"You need to be wise to tame a Legend."
"A lion might be easier," I admit, knowing just how wild Kane can be.
"It's worth the ride."
I burst out laughing the second I hear her words. "Please, please tell me that my little sister did not just say that," I beg.
"I only speak the truth," she says with a shrug.
