Page 111 of The Betrayal You Serve
"No clue. Harley said they were busy tonight."
Untangling myself from Kane, I right my clothing and walk to the front door.
"Oh my God," I gasp when I pull the door open and find our two visitors impatiently waiting on the other side.
"You're still alive," Ella squeals, stepping inside and wrapping her arms around me.
"El, I spoke to you yesterday."
"I know, I know. So how's the patient doing?" she asks, inviting herself inside. "Whoa, Legend. Gotta be honest, you've looked better."
"Thanks. Um… who let you in?" I shake my head at the two of them before turning back to our other, calmer guest.
"Lee," I say with a smile before jumping into his arms.
"Hey, Cupcake. How's it going?"
"It's… good. Yeah."
"You sure?"
"Yeah. It's just been a weird few days. What are you doing here anyway?"
"We missed you. Thought we'd come visit. Plus, we brought cupcakes," he says, lifting the bag I didn't see by his feet.
"Well, now that you've said that, come on in."
Elle is still talking Kane's ear off when I close the door behind Leon.
"Come help me make coffee?" I ask after he's gasped in shock at the state of Kane's face.
"He didn't just get jumped, did he?" Leon whispers to me once I've placed the bag of cakes on the side.
I blow out a slow breath and drag my eyes from the counter to meet his.
"The less you know, the better."
"Yeah, as I thought. What's going on with him and college. He's coming back, right? We need him."
"Honestly, I have no idea right now. We're working on getting his scholarship reinstated but who knows if that'll happen. But even if it does, he's not going to be playing anytime soon. He was shot, Lee."
Leon's eyes almost pop out of his head at my confession.
"In his shoulder, clean shot. But still. It's gonna take time before he's ready for the field."
"Fucking hell, Let."
"I know what you're thinking, but seriously, Lee. All of this is as much part of my life as his."
"Your old life," he points out.
"Only because Mom miraculously got us out. If she didn't…" A shudder rips through me. "We got a second chance, Lee. It's time Kane got one too."
"I'm not arguing with you, Let. I totally agree. I just wish I could help."
"I think we've done all we can right now, we just need to wait for decisions to be made. How's Luc?"
"Aside from being a miserable motherfucker, you mean?"
