Page 59 of The Betrayal You Serve
But I already know it's pointless. It always is when it comes to Kane.
"You can't forget about him, can you?" Leon whispers in my ear as he catches me looking around.
"He's watching me, I can feel it."
He shakes his head, a smirk playing on his lips.
"You're really gone for him, aren't you?"
"N-no, I—" Ripping my eyes away from his knowing ones, I suck in a deep breath. "I can't stop it, Lee. No matter what I do. No matter what he does. There's just this thing between us, I can't even explain it."
"You don't need to," he says, cupping my cheek and staring deep into my eyes as if he actually understands. I've never known Leon to have a girlfriend of any kind, let alone one he's had a solid connection with but that's not to say he's never experienced it.
"You're a good friend, Lee." He smiles at me as a shadow falls over us and a shiver runs down my spine.
Leon's eyes lift from mine and he nods ever so slightly.
"I guess I don't need to guess where he is anymore, huh?"
Kane comes to stand beside the two of us. He's dressed all in black and looks as dangerous as ever as his blue eyes sparkle in the dim lights surrounding us.
Our connection holds for a beat as my body begins to burn hotter.
"Can I cut in?" he asks, taking a step forward at the same time Leon takes one back.
Reaching out, I grab Lee's hand and pull him back toward me.
"No," I say confidently, holding Kane's stare.
"N-no?" he asks with a laugh as if I'm joking.
He's about to discover that I'm not.
"Exactly. No. I'm spending the night with my friends," I say, jutting my chin out as the stares of said friends behind me begin to burn into the back of my head as they notice what's going on.
Kane's amusement soon vanishes from his face, quickly replaced by frustration.
"Princess," he growls, making my body shiver at the warning in his low tone.
"No, Kane. I'm done following your orders, go and find someone else to dance with." The words taste bitter as they fall from my lips, the thought of him touching someone else fills me with jealousy but I refuse to do as he says once again. All it does is land me in trouble.
"You're serious? You want me to go and find another girl?"
"Whatever," I say with a shrug, which I hope like hell doesn't show just how much the suggestion really does affect me.
Turning away from him, I focus on Leon as I start moving again to the music.
The sound of his low growl rumbles through me, but I don't turn to look at him.
"What are you doing, Let?" Leon whispers.
"Not letting him dictate my life," I hiss back, knowing full well he's watching me.
"He's not going to let this go."
"He's going to have to."
"I just want to talk." Kane's low, angry voice makes me pause.
